He reacts to Quintus dismissing his opinion about murdering Harkness, something he is only saying after he was actively encouraged to follow that path with the other BoS member trying to murder Max in the fight.

Meanwhile, Xander tries to manipulate Max (I do not buy for a second some of the shit he was saying was anything other than ways to control/confuse Max) and plays the Dude Bro buddy-buddy act for all its worth to get Max to steal the cold fusion. Max is fascinated by the armour, but is ignored like violence is all that matters. He cares about ethics but Xander pushes into Killing Fuck Yeah hard so Max goes along with it despite not being 100% sold (and we know given his reaction in ep2 that he's not thrilled about killing like the other knights).

In the end, everyone uses and dismisses Maximus as a fool, a tool, an easy weapon that can't think or act for himself. And it's becoming clearer that his journey is recognising his place in the world, free of outside influences and perception by finding and proving his own worth.
