always thinking about how Mass Effect is virtually alone in getting it right by not capitalising species names. asari and krogan not Asari and Krogan. we don't say Koalas and Mantis Shrimp and Common Octopus why would we say Klingon and Goa'uld and Mandalorian? is it because there is a tendency among scifi writers and readers to conceptualise sapient extraterrestrials more as other cultures than other species? so when we write them out we treat them like Romans and Germans and Aztecs rather than monkeys and badgers and ferrets? what do we learn about humanity (Humanity?) from that? anyway thank you Mass Effect for giving me another minor thing to obsess over

3200 people lost their jobs and healthcare

This has nothing to do with games being good. This is capitalism doing what it does and ruining the entertainment industry even more. This is destruction of investment into creativity. Because once again, instead of new or different IPs they buy up everything and just focus on remakes, sequels, and expansions because it brings in quick cash cows.

And it’s all to line pockets. Because there’s no way obsidian is getting any money for their own projects in this outcome. There’s no “okay let’s just work on this branded IP to bankroll or personal IPs” because it is Microsoft running it now.

does it not feel like a weird situation? Is there a plan to shutter obsidian until there’s nothing left and the devs go work at other studios or get laid off? Then they can right it off in taxes or whatever? Isn’t this just the beginning of their “overhaul”? I just can not see it as a “win” and can only see it as a bad omen

This is a probably a loose loose situation for obsidian. They do well making a fallout game, Microsoft diverts more resources into having them become a sub studio for Bethesda IPs. They do bad, they get axed and the studio shutters.
