You're not really supposed to say it this way, because its considered crass, but here in the US children are culturally and legally considered essentially the property of their parents.

I don't know how to make this not sound mean but I'm not trying to be mean, so please know that going in.

An opinion piece that touches on a topic I've struggled to communicate: I kinda hate how land acknowledgements are carried out. To me, it feels obnoxious to do a token statement of shame for being on stolen land while not actually doing anything about it. It's intrinsically colonialist. I am particularly bothered when the acknowledgement is inaccurate or too broad. It shows a complete lack of care. Not too long ago I went to an art gallery that mentioned how a specific tribe "stewarded this land for millennia" despite the fact that that tribe displaced another tribe only a few hundred years ago. It's virtue signaling. This article also points out that it inherently reaffirms the concept that land can be owned. That the natives owned it before it was stolen, despite the concept of owning the land being tied to European colonizer mentality. I'd much rather see institutions platform how they help indigenous communities today rather than put a paragraph on their website about how they feel oh so bad for stealing this land but there's nothing they can do about it!
