Taking a seat at the furthest edge away from her…’suitor’ as she draped herself in a heavy blanket to ward off the chill before glancing back at him “We..don’t have to do this..I could end the night by us..tea or..something” Sigyn finished awkwardly as the mood of the room seemed to taking a nosedive with each passing second. He looked at her eyes and moaned softly. “I am sorry I must break your rule and ask.” He knew he was older, on the brim of being 40. He lean forward as he waited for her answer. His eyes looking past her shoulder as she spoke. He didn’t mind these games she was playing, but he was a mature older man and he was the mayor. It could easily be a set up. Sigyn clicked her tongue at the feline duo as stout hide of Skol leaped up in her lap with an air of surprising grace. While Hati remained fixated on the stranger who had invaded his space who was wisely backing up. “You are a big bully, you know that” Sigyn scolded a now basking Hati who rolled onto his back showing his furry belly. A trap, for the naive victim as Sigyn glanced up at the man “Uh..don’t stick your hand down there. Its a trap..I know it may be hard to resist even Stephen can’t resist it at times..”.  Faint recognition lit up in her eyes as she craned her head taking a better look at the harassed man “Are you..Doctor Banner?  Sorry for asking, but you seem to match the description I occasionally hear my patrons at the shop talk about”.

A faint look of concern came on her face as she asked softly “Although, it seems you are normally more collected…is everything all right?”. Judging by the man’s excessively mussed hair and his almost accident, something was obviously on his mind. Did she really have the right to pry, but it couldn’t hurt to ask. Right?

Bruce had never quite been in the position to be bullied by a cat before, but apparently today was just going to be that day.  He let out a slightly exasperated laugh. “Oh don’t worry, I learned at a very early age that nothing is like it seems.  And reaching into a den of what looks like very sharp claws isn’t something I’m looking forward to.”  Bruce grinned a little at the woman, who spoke, vaguely recognizing her from the bookstore at the other end of town.  "Yes, Doctor Banner,“ he said and smiled.  "Bruce.  And you..I’m sorry I don’t remember your name, but I know you have that charming bookstore down the road.”  He made a wide berth around the cats and reached out a hand to shake hers.

“But I also know well enough that Stephen’s lost a battle with a few cats in his day, a lot of bandages and triple antibiotic cream,” he teased gently and resettled his glasses on his nose.  "Oh,“ he said after a moment and he laughed.  "Yes, everything’s fine, I’m just feeling a little more scattered as we’re getting closer and closer to midterms.  And Kitty’s a bit…intense about it, but that’s neither here or there, really,” he said and smiled.  "Just a little more distracted than usual.“

Shrugging her shoulders as Sigyn commented “Literature is all the matter of perspective, people find my love of maps..off at times..but that hasn’t stopped me from attempting to learn all the terminology from all the books I could my hands on..”. A faint light came into her eyes as Hope opened up the possible door to another genre as Sigyn skittered to the front near the rack that Hope was browsing as she mulled over Hope’s concerns before flicking a hand near the south corner of the shop “Perhaps..historical fiction would be a good start. The authors themselves put in hours of research to recreate a historical setting from foods to moral codes..and begin exploring the possible ‘characters’ of the times. I can’t tell you how many times I wept for Queen Elizabeth and her doomed relationship with Sir Francis Drake. A ‘pirate’ and queen in love..but never allowed to be together..”. Sighing with a flair of dramatics as Sigyn giggled at the apparent gossip about her “A witch? Huh..I may have a perfect idea for a costume set for my cats then this Halloween. For your information I have only put one singular curse on that Peter Quill for his destructive raccoon..to have endless cravings..”.

A soft hum escaped her “Well you can’t please everyone..every profession has its’ critics. As long as you get personal satisfaction out of your job that’s all that matters..” Sigyn said concerned. Everyone had doubts if their current occupation was the right choice, even when she first opened the shop..her mother hadn’t been the most supportive..out a place of love..but it still hurt. Blonde brows rose in surprise as Hope dropped her last piece of gossip “You…and the mayor…I have only met in person earlier this morning. He seems a bit..too…scattered for your tastes. Although I am sure he is different in his private life…Right?”. Scarlet brushed over cheeks as she hastily backed up “Not that it’s my business. I am sorry I didn’t mean to pry..”.

Hope had made a sort of pact with herself when she moved here that she wouldn’t get drawn into this world.  That she wouldn’t put down roots here and make any kind of connection.  Being cold with most of the population was easy, but it was harder when there were people like Sigyn who seemed to genuinely want to make some kind of connection, even if it was just over a new book to read.  The fact that she seemed genuinely pleased to show her something made Hope feel a little bad for writing off an entire town before giving it a chance.   She listened to Sigyn wax on and on about the books and found herself smiling faintly.   “I wouldn’t mind reading something about Queen Elizabeth.  Or Mary Queen of Scots, I always thought she was quite interesting,” Hope mused.

She laughed a little along with Sigyn and shrugged.  "I know, ridiculous, but I guess I can see where they get it.  You’ve made a very unique place here.  That and your two cat familiars,“ she said and chuckled, looking over to the cats.  "Oh that one.  I’ve had to litigate his overdue parking tickets several times, I would put a curse on Quill too.”

Hope had thought that the gossip about her love life, and then subsequent lack of one had been fairly common knowledge.  The fact that it wasn’t surprised her a little and she felt a soft flush on her cheeks and then ducked her head.  "Well, it was back when he was campaigning.  He wasn’t scattered then.  He was focused and ambitious…“  Hope shook her head.  "No it’s fine, I might as well get the real story out there.  We dated for a week, it wasn’t scandalous at all.”  She lifted an eyebrow when she saw the color on Sigyn’s cheeks.  "Why, are you interested? I can see him liking you actually, I think he’s drawn to unique women.“

It was a surprise to see the faint pink on Hope’s cheeks as she explained her apparent connection to the Mayor before smiling weakly in hopes lessening the awkward turn the conversation had taken “He doesn’t seem to be all that content with just his mayoral duties”. As it was her turn for cheeks to darken as Hope inquired her own interest in the man “What! No, I am just embarrassed for asking such a prying question without asking...I know you are a more private...person” Her words trailed off awkwardly as could feel her cheeks heat akin to a tomato muttering “I swear my mother taught me manners. I am sorry if I pryed”. 

Right. My perspective on this backwater had changed..Excuse Miss Hill..mind if I pick you brain a bit as a muse…Eddie Brock, author just passing through the town.

I can see it now..featuring inspiration from a local cop that finally snaps..It could work..

A small sound of annoyance escaped her as her normally dexterous fingers seemed to fail around the shirts buttons. Scarlet hue decorated her features in the pale moonlight as she finally managed to free herself from the troublesome shirt. It fell to the ground as she could feel goosebumps ripple on her now exposed skin. At least she decided on the black lace tonight, it looked wonderful in any lighting.

Still concerned over his words as she spoke hesitantly “Is everything all right, Loki..you seem..stressed..”. Slipping out of her heels as she pushed the man gently onto the bed, straddling his form as her voice came out to a mere whisper “We..don’t have to do anything..if something is bothering you. I don’t want you be..upset..”. Gently pressing a kiss to the man’s forehead as she ran a hand through his locks “I won’t be upset”. It was a half-lie as her mind warred with riled up hormones “There is a zipper on the back of my skirt, if you want to help out..and the bra is simple enough..”.

Clearing her throat as she leaned back up and turned around, waiting for his choice. Stay and settle his mind…or go and leave her to devices. It was a lie that she wouldn’t be upset, as his actions in the alleyway seemed to indicate he was more than willing. Was it the drink talking, or had she misread something? At least the drawer next to her bed would never leave her wanting..as she shuddered at the thought. Nothing compared to a man’s touch as she could still feel the streak of heat in her gut from his attentions..

Choices. Everyone had to make them.

The edge of flirtation in his voice spurred her words forward as she whispered in his ear “You couldn’t handle my pussy..” Her words lost its heated tone as she burst into a fit of giggles as she leaned back “I am serious, my cats didn’t seem thrilled with your presence today..”.

As mischief danced in her eyes as she grabbed his hand to pull him along with her “We apparently won’t find out that answer tonight. As the cool night hit her heated face as she glanced back at her apparent ‘packer’ for the night “Think you can adjust your tastes for the night? “ Gently pressing him against the rocky brick wall behind him as her lips inches from his “I am afraid I don’t do delicate and vulnerable with my ‘packers’. So sorry to disappoint you”.

Loki thought about Amora for a moment. He battled wondering if he should commit fully and ask her to marry him. She fit his look very well and sometimes she could really make him feel good. Was it real love? It was hard to tell,but did anyone ever really fall in love in the real world? “She does a good job.” He said not really feeling like speaking about her. He should not be here with an attractive female he seem to have odd ideas about. He hadn’t heard from her in a while,and half wondered if she was with someone else tonight.

He reached out to grab a third drink. He pulled the cup to his lips. He wish he could have been prepared for what she had to say next. He choked on his drink and coughed it up when she said he couldn’t handle her pussy. “What?” He realized she meant her cats, it made his mind a bit foggy. “Cats do not care for me. I am afraid.” He realized he was blushing a bit. He let out another awkward cough.

Pulling him along after her for a moment as she released her hold on his tie as the public streets, even as deserted as they seemed..who knew if reporters were sniffing about the place. Bathed in the pale yellow glow of the street lamp as she beckoned him forward with a giggle “Come on, keep up or else I may just ‘accidentally’ lock you out”. Without waiting for an answer, her heels clicked against the sidewalk, up the somewhat rickety metal stairwell on the side on her shop beyond an attempted patch of garden, all the way to her humble doorway with a faded brass knocker as she opened it with ease of her key. Soft meows greeted her as Sigyn hastily dumped a bit of wet food within the empty feed trays “Be good and ignore the strange man..Okay” Sigyn silently begged as two sets of amber eyes gleamed at her. Her loft was simple, but comfortable. Two massive shelves displayed books of all kinds across a plush, but overstuffed leather couch. A simple kitchenette with a few dishes in the sink..and a winding black staircase leading up to the lofted bedroom.  

It was amazing to see how quickly ‘brilliant’ ideas seem to implode as soon as things were set in motion. It was a beautiful sunny day that Sigyn felt like sharing with her world..her world being two fuzzy, lazy Maine Coon cats determined to ruin her fun. As their fifteen pound masses seemed content to park themselves right in the middle of concrete, making stuttering growls as each pull of their harnesses.  The two beasts didn’t seem to mind wearing them in the apartment as practice..but their species’ stubborn pride seemed to take a personal affront within seconds of their paws stepping into the public. Clad in a cream sundress as Sigyn stared down at her felines, her left hand gripping the leather leashes “You two are a huge disappointment right now..Be proud of that..”.

Two sets of purrs seemed to radiate from the sunning felines as black and white bellies were shown to the sunshine intent on soaking it in. Sighing under her breath as Sigyn was at least lucky that their attitudes kicked in as soon as the trio reached the simple ‘plaza’ of the town. It wasn’t anything special..a patch of grass, a tiny fountain and a few benches in the shade of trees. At least here she would be able to read a bit in peace as she secured the leash around her wrist..keeping an eye on the sunbathing cats as her face turned apologetic to the stranger  

“I am sorry about the little beasts..I don’t think they will be moving for awhile..Think you can go around them?” Sigyn said apologetically as she could see the tell-tale wags of irritation in the pairs tails, ticking with each second that their personal sunshine was being blocked.

Bruce knew he’d been more or less off in his own world in the past week or so, trying to wrap his head around everything that had changed for him in the past couple of weeks.  He was very unused to being excited about his life, but then not much tended to happen in it that could be considered exciting.  Usually. Even this excitement seemed like it should be of the mundane kind, but nothing about it felt exactly mundane.  In fact, it seemed to keep taking his mind far away from himself, enough that his daughter definitely noticed.  Enough that he had to get out of the house to get away from her increasingly personal questions, ones that he thought no daughter should ask their father.

All of it had lead to this rather impromptu walk, his hands stuffed in his pockets as the cool fall air ruffled his already messy hair, the feeling refreshing rather than cold. But even that wasn’t enough to shock him out of his wildly racing thoughts, and Bruce continued on his rather distracted way.  At least until he nearly tripped over two large cats that seemed to take up most of the sidewalk in front of him. “Oh,” he said, the sound coming out rather startled as he stepped back swiftly, just barely avoiding a swinging cat’s tail.  "I…yes, I suppose I should.  I haven’t had a fight with a cat in years and I think I’ve forgotten how they go.  But it would probably end badly for me.“

Hope Van Dyne was a pleasant customer to have for any business. Paid on time, came in often and was patient when things were busy. As a book lover, it was always a treat seeing the usually stoic woman get excited over books. Even dry as law books were in Sigyn’s occasional attempt to find some enjoyment in the lofty tomes. Waving off her casual dismissals of her literature interest with a soft smile “Everyone has some type of literature that speaks to them..You don’t have to explain that to me..”. Literature was for all types of people, from those seeking to improve their communication to lovely little grannies with surprising taste in bodice ripper novels to giggle with each other over.

Even the relentless lawyer fell prey to the town’s ravenous circle of gossip as Sigyn gave her a faint smile “I would be flattered to hear that type of gossip about me. Although I would avoid the blood of the occasional drunk at one of the bars. Bet it would taste like cheap booze..easy case to win though for disorderly conduct right?”. Lightly teasing her as she knew once rumors began about a town resident it would gradually putter off into nothing..

Hope felt her smile broaden for just a moment and she shrugged one shoulder, shaking her head gently.  "I don’t think anyone would call textbooks literature.  Other than me, that is,“ she said and hummed just a little under her breath.  Instead of immediately grabbing her purchases and leaving, she wandered over to the rack of books closes to her, her fingers tripping lightly over the spines, a thoughtful frown on her face.  "I don’t know, maybe I should be broadening my horizons.  But I never much liked fiction.  I’d rather worry about what’s real and true.  I guess that’s what makes me incredibly boring.”

She huffed under her breath, a little amused at herself.  "Oh you think you would until you have it.  The gossip about you is much more kind, as far as I’m aware,“ Hope said.  There wasn’t really all that much known about Sigyn really, at least as far as Hope was concerned.  “The only think I’ve heard whispered about you is that you’re really a witch.  The good kind, faeries and magic spells, that kind of thing.”  She smirked.   "Not at all like me. Not that I mind, as far as I can tell it just means I’m doing my job.  If people think I’m a bitch for it, then so be it.”  She smiled. “But really I think I’m most infamous for being one of the mayor’s cast offs.  As horrifying as that is.”

The chiming of the door’s tiny bell made her look up from the worn journal entry she had been reading for the tenth time as one of her more serious customers came in. Hope Van Dyne was the type of customer any business owner could appreciate, she wasn’t one for much small-talk and she knew what she wanted without lingering for too long. Not to mention she had somewhat deep pockets as Sigyn came to find out after her first order. “Good morning, Miss Van Dyne, your order came in yesterday. Don’t worry I didn’t let Skol is on the package this time..”. The cat mewed lazily as a single eye opened to peek at the customer, but made no effort to move his lumbering mass from the over-stuffed pillow. Gently placing the brown wrapped package onto top of the counter as she slid it over. 

Dipping her head slightly as the customer’s new request with a faint smile “I am glad you asked about that..the supplier seemed unusually excited about it when I was making delivery arrangements for your previous order. I don’t know anything about law, but it’s always pleasant to hear passion about a book..” Sigyn commented idly as she retrieved an order slip from a nearby counter drawer, scribbling down a few things here and there before turning the page over to Hope. “Sign there at the bottom and your order will hopefully be here within a week..just pay me then. So, how have you been?”. It was a polite question and conversation as neither woman knew much about the other aside from their respective professions..idle chat was expected between the relationship of client and business owner..

There were parts of Hope that still couldn’t believe she frequented places like this. For a woman who had grown up largely in San Francisco, home to so many counter-culture movements, Hope was very particular about how she liked things.  Her favorite bookstores had always been the ones like the law library on the Columbia campus, tall stacks, well dusted and organized, buffed marble floors, and a silence so thick you almost believed you couldn’t speak at all.  In a word, intimidating.

And this place was the exact opposite, homey and charming, dust motes making the air seem to glow around the windows, and always always the mewling of Sigyn’s cats. It was like stepping back into another world, so  much that sometimes Hope felt a little head rush and wondered if the woman knew how much she would have hated a place like this back when she had more options. “Oh so I won’t find a charming collection of cat hair when I open it up at home?” Hope said with a wry kind of smile, a small laugh threatening to escape her lips.  It did turn into a full on chuckle after a few more moments, shaking her head.  "No I wouldn’t expect anyone to care about it as much as I do.  But at least you indulge me and refrain from calling me a freak like most people do, collecting first edition law books.“  Hope had spent far too much money on the collection already, complete with a fireproof display case.  She reached for the receipt and signed it with a flourish, knowing that her savings would balk a little at the price, but also knowing that rare books was her one weakness. "Oh, I’ve been pretty much the same.  Winning cases, drinking the blood of my enemies, you know the usual gossip about me around town.”
