And this, folks, is why you vote in your off-year elections.Β With Roe gone, itβs the states that are going to be making the laws about abortion.Β (Unless the Democrats get a net two-seat gain in the US Senate, which is not looking likely at this point.)Β Β And they make decisions about education, about labor conditions, about how poverty programs work and who qualifies for them, about what rights tenants and landlords have--most of the stuff that affects your day-to-day, or what happens to you in a crisis, is legislated or administered by your state government.Β Β
Many, many fewer people vote in elections for their state legislature, so your vote has a bigger impact than it does in the federal races.Β Plus, itβs not as big of a lift, to get elected to the statehouse, so you do get the opportunity to vote for people, like this Senator, who have depth and breadth of experience in a field other than politics that is valuable to have in the room, and who have perhaps not made the kind of compromises that are necessary to make it onto the national stage.Β Β
You still get hold-your-nose-and-vote candidates at the state level--and you should still hold your nose and vote for them, if theyβre better than their opponent--but you are way, way likelier to get to vote for a candidate youβre actually excited about in a state-level election than you are for President or US Senate.Β Β
