sincerely one of my favorite chick details is the way he shakes at high speeds. like it's one of those hyper-specific, nigh imperceptible details that only early pixar wouldve ever made the effort to include but still breathes that slight bit of life into the subject with its inclusion. and yet again it's even more visual symbolism to push that this guy is old as rocks
Lightning McQueen (and, by extension, all the racecars in Pixar's Cars) actually represent the end-all-be-all of motorsports. In real life NASCAR has had to introduce a lot of changes to the cars that made fans mad for the safety of the drivers. Restrictor plates, smaller engines, slower speeds.
But with Lightning McQueen, there is no human driver. It's the car itself. The weakest part of a racecar is the human, and without any humans, the Piston Cup racers can be allowed to get faster and more aggressive and the races more intense over time. Pure motorsports spectacle
Maybe that's why Chick Hicks is allowed to keep racing despite being such a destructive driver.
I mean Chuck Armstrong looked like THIS but claimed he was still good to race. Cars are just tougher than humans, overall. They can take a lot of abuse and then be fixed up to be the same as they were before. It might take a long time to get fixed up, like it did with Doc Hudson, but it's not nearly as damaging for them to get in an accident as it would be for a human inside of them.
The Piston Cup (and probably the World of Cars at large) just doesn't have as much concern about driver safety as real-world NASCAR does, because their drivers are physiologically able to take more damage and recover from more damage. Why should Chick Hicks get in trouble for causing a crash? He's just creating another spectacle for the audience. Everyone loves to see a high-speed crash! He's probably pulling in a lot more viewers this way! Nobody really gets hurt because cars don't really get hurt.
Lizzie invites McQueen and Sally over for drinks. You'd think being high-octane would make him better at handling ethanol, but apparently that is not so....
i know the very obvious irony of chick calling the king "old man" is that chick himself is very clearly on his way out next but it also being a desperate self assurance that he wont be on his way out next gets to me
