Hi! This isn't a medical question so much as a sort-of-general undergrad one. I wake up around 5 AM and go to bed around 10 PM each day. Generally, around 1-2 PM I get a serious case of The Sleepies--I have to keep stretching or fidgeting during lecture in order to stay alert or else I zone out and nearly fall asleep. I've tweaked my diet/exercise, and nothing works! You've pulled A LOT of long/intense medical shifts--what has worked to stave off The Sleepies? Or prevent them altogether?
The mid-afternoon sleepies may indeed have something to do with your diet: if you eat a heavy meat and carb load at lunch, it may make you feel sluggish. Also, do you have a boring class from 1-2? Maybe it’s the class, not you. Maybe figure out some ways to be more engaged in class? Like taking colorful notes or playing with silly putty (I’m a big fan of silly putty for fidgeters - it’s fun and doesn’t bother other people). Or maybe you just need a 30 minute afternoon nap to refresh you.
Also - maybe 7 hours of sleep isn’t quite enough for you. We say the average is 7-9. Maybe you’re closer to 9. I am. Try an extra hour of sleep and see where that gets ya.
Also remember sleep quality matters. Try to avoid caffeine and alcohol a few hours before bedtime so it doesn’t affect your sleep cycles.
Sometimes the sleepies just happen. I mean, if you’ve been working a long day and your sleep is lacking, you’re gonna get sleepy. Sleepiness is a warning system telling you to slow down sometimes. At work I didn’t have a problem being sleepy if I was up doing something. It was the sitting down and spacing out that got me, too.
For everyone getting tired in afternoon lectures.

I HAD GRITS FOR THE FIRST TIME TODAY AND THEY WERE…
What is grits????
Catherine.
Girl send me your address and I will send you some grits for you to enjoy.
Grits are the corn version of oatmeal or cream of wheat. Just ground up corn and rainbows and unicorns. There is no singular form of grits. The word is always plural. Grits are significantly more delicious than oatmeal, and cream of wheat is pure trash not worth feeding to animals.
We eat grits with salt and butter or with cheese. In my opinion, adding cheese makes it a dinner food best served with seafood instead of a breakfast food, but I’ve had fights about that one before.
Bacon is always an acceptable additive to grits at any time of the day. A select minority of people will tell you to put sugar in your grits. These people are wrong.
I want me some grits right now, it's been so long and this just made me crave some. #idonthaveany
