This book was a ton of fun and had a number of new challenges for me!
The fic is a Shrek AU, so I went for a sort of fairytale vibe on the interior to match the storybook opening of the Shrek movies. Only, while I was redrawing the storybook page openings (so that I had them in a higher resolution) I tweaked some details to better match the story/characters ;)
The challenge I faced with these lovely storybook pages however, was that the paper weight that I use was a touch too light and the illustrations showed through slightly on the reverse page. Which wouldn’t have been as much of a problem if the gold gilding pen that I purchased wasn’t oil based and didn’t bleed through to the back side of the page…
Sadly I didn’t have any higher weight paper on hand so change of plan involved tweaking my typeset so that each illustrated page had a blank backside to it. Then I tipped the edges of the pages together. And then I tore the faux deckled edges into the book. All of which had to be completed only after the text block was sewn, because some of the signature middles landed on those blank middle pages. 😭
Suffice to say the construction order of this book was one big puzzle that had me doing this the entire time
However! I am so, so pleased with the results! This was my first time attempting faux deckling like this, as well as my first time doing interior gilding! Also my first time doing a proper laminated dust jacket! (Which also had gilding woo!)
Speaking of, the design of the dust jacket is one I especially love! There’s a gorgon character within the story and another character that often mentions their beloved strawberry patch back home so it was only befitting that I combine the two for the cover! (Slightly stylized of course, and yes I know you wouldn’t be able to see the snake tails if they’re relating to a gorgon but hush.)
My one regret with this book that I didn’t catch in time (before I had already sent the dustjacket for printing), is that the spine text is the wrong direction 😭 Every book I almost make this mistake but catch it in time, and this was the one time I failed that. 😔 Alas.
But can we talk about how well those endband colors match the endpapers and cover???? 👀
Materials:
Cover bookcloth is Cialux in 1521 Maroon with a small amount of Siser Metal Gold HTV on the front.
Dustjacket is made using Staples’ poster print service on 6.8 mil thick paper type then hand gilded with Sakura Pen-touch Calligrapher gold pen (very pretty results, somewhat finicky to work with) and laminated (with a large lamination roll as opposed to the individual sheets you usually find - so as to avoid seams).
Endpapers are Black Ink Florentine Print Decorative Paper - Portofino.
Bound using linen thread and archival pva glue, endbands sewn using single strand embroidery thread in a faux-double core style. Printed on Hammermill 20lb cream paper.
Passed the 1 year mark a couple days ago for the Villainous Imposer Program -- my bookbinding imposition tool. Gave a talk on it for Binderary over on the @renegadeguild Discord but realized I never posted about it here...? It's not exactly beginner friendly, but I find it damn useful. Took what I learned contributing to bookbinder-js and re-wrote things from scratch to support all the power features and impositions I could possibly want. (it's basically a free fancy web page)
The goal this year is to dial in addressing printer skew -- I don't know how to do it yet, but that's the fun of a challenging goal, no? I just really want at home text block printing to look as polished as possible. Am also thrilled that my cry for help during the talk actually rallied aid (bless Lele of the Gilding the Lele Press!! 🙏) and there will be folding animations 'soon' for the various configs.
Have paused coding-brain for a bit to return to the basics -- am binding a ~1,000 piece for Binderary (a Legal Tiny!) and have 12 signatures left (out of 60 😩) -- but am looking forward to tackling 2 new impositions when I cycle back to it.

So. Here's all that's said in the low light.
all thats said is always going to be one of those fics, you know? One of the ones that inspire me constantly, regardless of how many times I read it. This fic was my original catalyst to start book binding, so having the opportunity to do it again, with all the tools and things I've learned after just a year and a half of binding, was a treat.
Did I re-download the whole fic and reformat everything again? You bet your bottom. The fic got a little face lift - not anything extreme, just some bits and bobs that were tweaked, so I did a fresh download and some sprucing up.
Lets talk a little technical first. This is the first time I've ever done a rounded spine. The entire process was not as terrifying as I thought, but I SURE did learn that the steps are important to getting it to look right. This is also the first time I've use book board this thick. And let me tell you something - I'm not going back. That sucks for my wallet, but the books will look better for it. It was terrifying to do the first time, and then it....was fine. the second one was much easier then the first.
Ugh - she's beautiful. The headbands? On point. That curve? Posh. The book cloth? PERFECT.
One thing that I DID NOT do when I started binding was opening pages. Now, I build out a title page, a specialized copyright page, a quote paged - all that match the overall aesthetic of the bind's theme. For this monster, headlocket also had included ART - so we have a full spread of headshots. Ugh. Beautiful. So the first few pages are the intro set to the same theme as the first edition: Soap's battered notebook.
Low Light's theme, for me, has always been about growth. I picked this soft sage color for the background and splashes, pulled a softer gray as a text color, and chose a text style that i liked the look of from the first edition.
Headers are the same - they all include lines pulled from the poems in the fic. Laid in actual drop caps using the same header text type, and matched the grey color from the headers. For the flashbacks I added a coffee stain motif behind the text to create a softer divide between then and now. Text messages were resized, so I didn't have to re-do those - but I did take a lot more time embedding them between the text.
So....I did remake this for headlocket. I had reached out in either May or June, i think, and made them an offer - I'll re-bind the book for you, in exchange for some sketches from a few parts of the fic that i could include in the re-bind itself.
Ya'll. Does your girl have some (currently) exclusive art weaved into the bind? She sure does. I got permissions to specifically share this page - showing the comparison I did of the 1st and 2nd edition (down below). Other then the headers and the actual page numbers that MATCH THE TEXT, I updated the font type and text size and the spacing and, you know, everything about how the page looks. I had asked specifically for looser, sketchy drawings - which is outside of their normal style of creating art - but they gave it a shot and honestly? I WAS BLOWN AWAY.

The comparison between the first time I chisel trimmed the edge of a book to me using a my fucking guillotine - W I L D. Also a shot of using a pre-made headband and actually stitching one. Hell yeah.
This is still my favorite Ghost/Soap fic. There is such a specific world built here that feels so real, crafted and tended to - I adore it. Ugh. Please read this fic if you haven't, and if you have please read it again. This was a pleasure to do, seriously - and I am honored and privileged that authors I respect keep saying yes to letting me touch their work. Maybe in another year and a half I'll dig into this again.
For my last project I backed a marbled paper with normal endpaper to hide some ugly marks. This also works if your paper is too thin to be used as endpapers.
Leave the paper bigger, than you need it and the paper you will back it with even bigger.
Take note of the grain of both papers. They have to be the same direction.
Use a laquer bowl and paint roller to quickly, evenly and thinly put watered-down glue onto the pretty paper.
Put it to the backing paper, Take care not to leave folds.
Put it between two pieces of cardboard an into you press. If it's bigger than your press, do it in steps for 20-30 seconds.
Take it out and iron it. Put some silkpaper on top as to not leave marks from the iron.
Put it back into the press or under something heavy until it is completely dry.
It will curl a little into one direction, because the different papers have different expansion coefficients. This will not be a problem, it will settle down with time.
It will also be quite stiff. If you use glue based on starch and cook it for a really long time it might help.

Such a great Sterek fic! You've got magical Stiles, BFF Danny, and slow build Sterek, what more could you ask for? Other than binding it so you have your own copy!
This came about from doing a Sterek trade with @legallybooks, one Folio and one Quarto, and this was the folio I made them! I'm so happy it made it to them safe!
The cover showcases @dakotaliar amazing Stiles fanart! I designed the typeset, which used pngtree sparkles for the chapter pages.
Printed on church paper in warm white and PPD printable canvas.
Recently I got an amazing gift from @gempothospress - a bound book of Summer to Your Heart!!! This fic was such a labor of love for me, and seeing the labor and the love that went into this book was incredibly moving.
The exterior is so understated and classy, with beautiful marbled paper in summer colors.
The whole bind uses motifs of apple blossoms, which is so perfect for the fic (if you've read it, you'll know why), and there's even this gorgeous iridescent flower pattern on the end papers!
It carries through to the typeset (which was a gargantuan undertaking, by the way - more than 200,000 words!) with these lovely apple blossom chapter and scene separators.
I could not be happier with this beautiful book! This is the most personal of all my fics, and it means the world to me to have a copy I can hold in my hands--and such an exquisite one at that. It also gave me the perfect opening to share a part of this story with my parents, who are so present in it: I read each of them the scene where Jaromir and his parents prepare the fruit during that first summer, and they were both very touched.

This is my first time attempting to deboss by hand without foiling. The gold and silver you see on the cover is calligraphy ink I tried to paint into the pattern.
