There's a heatwave happening in the Europe right now. 18 people have already died in France. I was looking into air conditioners for a friend of mine who lives in the UK, and I saw a shockingly low number of actual air conditioners on sale, and a shockingly high number of "Evaporative Coolers" on offer. They're also sometimes called "Swamp Coolers".
DO NOT BUY THESE DEVICES.
These types of coolers work by blowing air over cold water or ice, and while they can produce a slight, localized cooling effect, they also increase the humidity in the air. At 40C (104F), a 40% humidity will feel like 48C (119F). 50% humidity will feel like 55C (131F).
Evaporative/Swamp Coolers only work if it is really dry. Like desert dry. And even then it's only effective up into the 90s (my personal opinion). Any higher and it doesn't do much.
some WIPs from the past few days, using quills and a lot of patience lol

I feel like I say this every time but I'm making the prettiest book cover in existence right now. It's only about 2/3 done but holy shit.
I took the week off work to do housekeeping but the thing I'm doing most of is bookbinding, and while that means that things are still dusty I'm having such a good time it's hard to regret it. And these are books I printed in February so I think finishing them should count as cleaning anyway.
Field notes from the time I scouted a decommissioned nuclear power plant...
This is the control room, and if you look closely, you'll see a dark stripe in the carpet running the perimeter of the room. This was referred to as the "velvet rope," and absolutely NO ONE was allowed to cross it without authorization. It was under constant observation from an adjacent office, and I was told that if someone did set foot inside without permission, things got VERY serious VERY quickly.
This is one of the computer stations, and to me, it's such a gorgeous encapsulation of its period of technology, the sort of aesthetic that shows like Lost will bend over backwards to recreate.
As I was scouting, I noticed the day calendar had last been torn off about when the plant closed for good...
Then we went into the nuclear reactor, and the whole damn thing was just so spooky.
Looking back, I think it came from an overwhelming feeling of utter insignificance in the face of the sheer power this colossus was designed to produce.
The scale was just so out of proportion to every day reality, the sort of place where a weight of "46000 LBS" is just casually noted on the side of a part.
Peering into where the core would've been, all I could think is that I'd never want the job where you have to climb down that ladder on the left while this thing was in operation.
If you're interested in seeing more, you can find my full tour here!

And as always, follow for more location scouting fun...
there are places in the world today that are experiencing 40°C for the first time in recorded history. of course there's no way to know whether chucking billionaires into volcanos will appease the sun god but i feel we're doing the scientific method a disservice if we don't at least try

you are fifteen thousand generations removed from stone tools
to be clear you are fifteen thousand generations removed from the invention of stone tools. not from the end of stone tools. modern humans are still using stone tools.
Flawless tags, @baddywronglegs
I thought you meant we were descendents -of- stone tools

Do you live in a place that gets a lot of tourists?
Do you live in a place that gets a lot of tourists?
Yes
No
I started titrating down my dosage of antidepressants and now I have tinnitus and cry at the movies.
stuff that's made me cry this week:
the rock opera I was in ended its run
dropped a bowl of beads on the floor
thought about how nice my friends are to me
thought about how nice friends i used to have were to me
that scene in The Wedding Banquet (1993) where the main character's mom finds out her son is gay and his fake fiancée tries to give back her heirloom wedding qipao
that scene in The Wedding Banquet where the main character's dad reveals to his son's lover that he speaks English and he's known the whole time that his son was gay. and then he addresses the lover as his son in law.
saw a really small baby bunny
Tiny bunnies are very cute so this is understandable.
Thank you. This thing was smaller than a soda can. That's too small!!!!
I also understand crying at the smol bunny.
Here was one I nearly stepped on because it decided not to move. Ft. The greyhound with Zero Prey Drive. Boy did Not Care that there was a rabbit. His nose does Not work. He probably would have peed on it if I didn't move him.
I took him back in and came back out to see the rabbit without stressing it too much and found his little ears in the ivy
oh my god
Swing state gothic
Doing the recycling so very responsibly at work
I didn’t take many photos this weekend, but you can enjoy this one that made me laugh.
