Today's wasp of the day is Calopompilus pyrrhomelas!
Credits: photo 1, photo 2
This wasp specializes in hunting trapdoor spiders, which is not an easy feat. And since trapdoor spiders do such a good job of having a secure little bunker, this wasp also makes use of that too. The wasp lures the spider towards the opening of its burrow, not far enough for the spider to pounce but enough for the wasp to drag it out for a quick paralyzing sting. She'll then drag the spider back into its own nest, lay an egg, seal everything up, and then leave to be on her way. Before documented observation of this behavior, it was believed that the wasp initially breaks into the spider's burrow and fights it within. Now we know that she knows how to use the terrain to her advantage to disorientate and overpower the spider.

in the early 21st-century, the βsmall businessβ was a sort of small temple run by a local warlord. Patrons could purchase small trinkets and be granted absolution for the sins of their empire. This was called βethical consumption.β

Almost forgot about this really cool bug that flew into my car as I was leaving from work
Purple Pitcher Plants (Sarracenia purpurea), taken July 14, 2026, in New Hampshire, US
Thousands of pitcher plants nestled within the sphagnum moss mat of a bog! This was my first time in a bog, and I was (and still am) so in awe of how all of the pitcher plants looked on the vivid red ground. Red and green is one of my favorite color combinations, so to be surrounded in nature by the exact shades I love seeing together was incredible. I took tons of close-ups of individual pitchers, but I started zooming out at the end in an attempt to communicate the sheer number of plants there were. It felt like they never ended, and it was amazing!

rainbow lattice sunstone
I had a very long meandering dream and the only part i remember was being in a creek bed near some crumbling cliffs made of something like shale on a cold, barren plateau and finding that it was full of these flat gemstones amongst the shale which looked as though they had been artificially cut. They looked like a cross between fire agate and rainbow lattice sunstone. I knew I was dreaming and was trying to figure out a way I could hide them on my person so I could smuggle them through waking up, but felt like I couldn't remember how.
An expert hunter with a sensational smile β¨ π¦·π
Pacific viperfish (Chauliodus macouni) may look intimidating, but those dramatic teeth are perfectly suited for life in the deep sea. They are among the countless marine animals that migrate each night from the oceanβs depths towards shallower surface waters to dine on small fishes and shrimp before returning to the depths.
Their long, needle-like teeth help them grip slippery prey, while their hinged jaws open wide enough to catch a meal that might otherwise escape. A row of tiny light-producing organs along their belly also helps them blend into the faint light filtering down from above, making them harder for predators and prey to spot.
Every observation of animals like the Pacific viperfish helps us better understand the remarkable adaptations that allow life to thrive in the deep ocean.

I got to see some late blooming california pitcher sage recently and the smell is amazing. A few eucalyptusy notes to the left of normal sage. Also in love with the soft gradient of light lavender to white of the flowers.

I am learning that buddhist monks favorite insult is to say the sect/temple/lineage of the person or people annoying them is dead. Messy breakup? Dead temple. Don't like their sermon? Dead lineage. You have inconvienced me slightly which is a clear sign you are never escaping samsara. Bitch.
