This isn’t because Burger King is nicer in Denmark. It’s the law, and the US is actually the only so-called “developed” country that doesn’t mandate jobs provide a minimum amount of paid vacation, sick leave, or both.
It is the same in Sweden. It is so funny every time an american company opens up offices here and then tries to do it the american way and all the unions go “I don’t think so”.
Like when Toys ‘r Us opened in sweden 1995.
They refused to sign on to the union deals that govern such things as pay/pension and vacation in Sweden. Most of our rights are not mandated by law (we don’t have a minimum wage for example) but are made in voluntary agreements between the unions and the companies.
But they refused, saying that they had never negotiated with any unions anywhere else in the world and weren’t planning to do it in Sweden either.
Of course a lot of people thought it was useless fighting against an international giant, but Handels (the store worker’s union) said that they could not budge, because that might mean that the whole Swedish model might crumble. So they went on strike in the three stores that the company had opened so far.
Cue a shitstorm from the press, and from right wing politicians. But the members were all for it, and other unions started doing sympathy actions. The teamsters refused to deliver goods to their stores, the financial unions blockaded all economical transactions regarding Toys ‘r Us and the strike got strong international support as well, especially in the US.
In the end, Toys ‘r Us caved in, signed the union deal, and thus their employees got the same treatment as Swedish store workers everywhere.
The right to be treated as bloody human beings and not disposable cogs in a machine.
and that story right there? is exactly why Republicans in the US work so hard to bust unions. it’s because unionizing WORKS and they’re terrified of workers actually having some power.

Board member of the New Liberals shared antisemitic conspiracy theory
The German chancellor is part of a Jewish conspiracy to exterminate “the white race”, according to theory shared by a board member of the New Liberals.
The 29th of april 2018 a far-right internet activist wrote a noteworthy post on his public Facebook profile. The post was openly conspiratorial and antisemitic, but quickly became popular in far-right circles on Facebook. One of those who shared the antisemitic post was Steffen Berggren Clausen from the New Liberals. He is a board member in the Lyngby-Taarbæk department and the former candidate for parliament. He is no longer candidate, but frequently shares the party’s propaganda on social media.
In the post, Germany’s chancellor, Angela Merkel, is accused of being a member of the Jewish “B’nai B’rith order”, which allegedly wishes for a “new Islamic world order”, a so-called “European Genocide-Projekt”, which will replace “…the european population with a mixed race of white people, africans and asians (muslims)”, as it’s formulated in the post.

Steffen Berggren confirms to Redox that he is a member of New Liberals, and that he is a board member of his local department in the party. Additionally he says that he is no longer a candidate for parliament, because he no longer had time for it due to his job.
On sharing the post he says that it’s not everything he shares that he agrees with, but that the conspiracy theories he reads make him wonder and have made him ask himself questions.
“Could it be that there is more between heaven and earth in connection with the developments we experience? Is there another background than the one we know? Is there actually some kind of big elite which is controlling it all?”, Steffen Berggren says to Redox.

I also want to make it abundantly clear this is why people say “fuck cops” and why “Blue Lives Matter” is bullshit. It may only be a “handful” of corrupt cops (which is also bullshit) but it’s the entire institution behind them that enables them and refuses to take any form of accountability. Every single cop is complicit. Every single one.
It’s very hard to make Americans understand how utterly devastating the war was in other areas of the world. The Soviet Union lost 25 million people to fascist aggression, 40 million Chinese were murdered in cold blood, the areas that were under occupation were completely ravaged, lands and factories destroyed, all of it had to be rebuilt anew. The war continues to have a massive demographic impact on large swathes of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus because upwards of 80% of men of that generation who had fought died. Many women were widowed and were never able to remarry, lots of women just weren’t able to find a man to marry, period. Millions of orphans roamed the land fending for themselves because their parents had died, others grew up in broken homes where one parent (usually the mother) had to shoulder the burden of raising a family on a single income at a time when it was hard to get your hands on food. And all of this is a present day reality in many countries, Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan.
