getting scambot messages from random accounts that clearly used to be normal active blogs is sad enough. you know that there used to be a real person on that blog until they were tricked into handing their password to the digital fae.
but it's an entirely new level of tragic when somebody you've actually spoken to gets turned into a bot account. it's like peeking at a zombie apocalypse through the window and realizing one of the shambling corpses was your friend.
and then the zombie catches sight of you, lurches up to your window, and shouts through the glass that they accidentally reported your account to tumblr and you'll be deactivated unless you click this link.
RIP to the blog that used to DM me to tell me they liked my new chapters. Their last known words spoken before being turned, 17 hours ago: "Ggs!" They were praising someone's deadlift.
the message they tried to get me with is probably the same message that got them, so for anybody who hasn't already been warned about the signs of a zombie account:
if you get something like this ↑ they're gonna follow up by instructing you to contact tumblr support on discord and give you contact info; or they're gonna link a website that looks sort of like tumblr support and say you have to email them; or any variety of "you must now contact tumblr, here is how you contact tumblr."
whatever they send you, it Does Not lead to tumblr. it leads to the master zombie that bit them and inducted them into the ranks of the undead, and will bite you the second they have your email and password. i might be confusing zombies and vampires. anyway,
it's easier to fall for these messages because the blog doesn't LOOK like a bot blog, because it ISN'T a bot blog. it's a normal person's blog that got accessed by a bot, meaning the blog's content CLEARLY looks like a real active user when you click on it. and yes—it might even be a blog you already know. sometimes bots like this go down a blog's DMs or reblogs and message people they've previously interacted with.
they got one of my treasured followers, and they can get you too. don't fall for their tricks. know the signs.

this bind has been in development hell for some time, but I've decided it's met my proof of concept so here it is!
for this bind i used a lovely typeset by @finalfrontierpublishing .
this is a three piece in-boards bradel, with a leather spine. cover is inlaid with a second bookcloth, and the edges/cracks were painted red oxide acrylic, then water gilded with brass leaf for the kintsugi effect (I painted so many layers, it was damn near the whole real lacquer process). I didn't get a perfect finish, but I'm happy enough with it! edges are black ink with a single line of gold that matches the gold thread in the endband; the gold line is also the point where the story switches from "breaking" to "repairs" which is also shown by the art change in nic's typeset. some people might recognize this double core gradient endband from my binderary class this year, as i used it to teach the class.

so when i say this involved a lot of time, i mean I painted probably 10+ layers of acrylic over these bookcloth edges and sometimes sanded it back down to get a reasonably smooth raised surface for gilding (multiple layer of lacquer (and bole? maybe) are how actual kintsugi is done, though with much higher precision, and it's not usually a raised finish afaik).
and then applied brass leaf (i was at a friend's apt that day and did not have my bamboo tweezers so... bamboo chopsticks)
the leather spine involved some paring practice
and also figuring out that my first attempt to gild the leather section was going to tarnish, scraping all that back off, and going over it again with the acrylic first, then the leaf, then sealing it with dosabiki.
the gilding i did for this book is pretty cobbled together I think; i used the red acrylic to replace more authentic red bole, and then used an Italian water size to affix the brass leaf (water gilding style); and then finally pulled out the Japanese dosabiki to re-size the end result, which is common in japanese gilding to prevent tarnishing. the one part I might probably have screwed up is I'm not certain if I let the water size cure long enough before I applied the brass leaf; when I tried to burnish the leaf a little, it rubbed off instead. So somewhere in there I didn't give it enough time to dry.

okay so spock (the alien in blue) essentially goes into heat. like literal heat like an animal. Anyway, spock’s in bloodlust in this episode and must go back to vulcan to have sex with his finace (or someone. but its supposed to be his fiance) or he’ll literally die. this is called pon farr and some backstory spock is half human and thought he wouldnt go through pon farr so he abandoned his HOT fiance to fuck around in space except oops pon farr happens so. he and kirk (in yellow getting his tits cut open, he’s also spocks captain and best friend) and their other friend mccoy go to vulcan so he can have sex with his fiance or get married or whatever so he doesn’t die. but then spock’s fiance (t’pring) is like no i dont want to marry spock i want to have him fight someone to death (which she can do) and spock at this point is fully in the ‘blood lust’ and is basically not in his right mind and doesnt get what’s happening. and t’pring picks kirk to be her ‘champion’ in the fight (her logic is that if spock dies in the fight she doesnt have to marry him and if kirk dies, spock will be so upset with her he won’t marry her anymore anyway). anyway kirk doesnt know that its a fight to the death and so he’s like of course i’ll do this fight if it’ll help spock and then he gets told it’s a fight to the death and he goes WHAT and right afterwards spock slices his titties open like in the gif. also eventually spock and kirk roll around in the sand and kirk fakes his death and THIS somehow knocks spock out of his blood lust and he goes back to the ship super sad bc he’s killed his ‘best friend’ only to discover kirk’s alive and we see one of his biggest smiles of the series (a big deal bc spock is vulcan and they dont show emotion). anyway this aired as the season opener in 1967. know your history and all that happy pride

This confirms that there is a civilization older than the Sumerians that we have yet to find

Me? I think it's fucking awesome it shows just how much of this world we have yet to discover and that is just fascinating
@makaeru peer review cos this made me check when the Sumerians happened and I forget how recent history is for every other continent. 7000 - 8000 years ago just isn't that long when you're in Australia, and the amount of detailed history we have access to here is wonderful and should be recognised more internationally

This is part of my Ancient Civilizations class that I teach, which does a whole week about Australia and the Torres Strait Islands because I was sick of never seeing them represented in USAmerican history contexts. With the help of @micewithknives and @acearchaeologist I've learned so many incredible things about Australia's past and it's been incredibly rewarding to share them with students.
My favorite fact about Aboriginal oral history is the fact that we pretty recently discovered that the Aboriginal myth of the 7 Sisters, an origin story for the Pleiades star cluster, accurately reflects a point TEN THOUSAND YEARS AGO when two stars in the constellation got close enough together to no longer be distinguishable by the naked eye.
The story? 6 sisters running from something that took their 7th sister.
