" no ! oh no, you better not dare -- " is carol even listening? she has the same chesire grin and it doesn't even let up. " HEY WOAH . . . " all the protests are clearly worth nothing in the grand scale of friendship, as the tip of jen's nose first hits the frosting and then it coats the rest of her face all at once.
she lifts her head, looking dead ahead as icing and chunks of cake some sliding off her face and back onto the tray of the now wrecked to pieces cake. she only hopes that very little of it has ended up on her dress.
" i should've seen this coming, but by CAROL of all people ? y'know what, now that i say it out loud, i'm hearing it and . . . "
jen turns her head over her shoulder, shooting carol a shocked and betrayed look of anguish before it completely transforms from laughter. a hand slides over her face, wiping as much of the cake off as she can in one go before she lunges for carol, to smear the cake's frosting on her face too. revenge is lemony, with a hint of raspberry.

instead of 1982, alice misread the theme as 1928 and showed up as joan of arc from the french silent film the passion of joan of arc. she wore a loose linen dress, a homemade crown made from wire and twine, and carried a fake sword because no one was willing to sell her a real one. also kept her hair in a crown braid because she doesn't like haircuts. alice was a bit disappointed when she saw everyone else dressed for a different decade. she's refusing to answer questions about her own outfit now because she won't admit to making mistakes.

yes, when she can of course ! jen’s style and her wardrobe are pretty important to her most of the time. sometimes ya gotta fight in your bra and underwear sure, but having a well curated closet and stuff to choose from makes her feel good and confident! she holds her head up a bit higher and she feels more self assured when she wears something she loves.
so on her birthday she tries to wear something nice and comfortable and an outfit that’ll really make her feel like throwing her arms out wide and spinning in the streets, or her living room would do just as well. she’ll throw on those shoes she hasn’t really worn yet and she’ll shove aside her usual suit for something bright and brilliant. maybe there’s a neck tie or a ribbon or a scarf on her head, maybe it’s a floppy hat, or just a coat she feels marvelous in. if she’s spending the day at home, then maybe it’s a fancy outfit she doesn’t get to wear just for the sake of wearing it or it’s a brand new set of pajamas to be able to kick back in.

how jen tends to spend her birthdays largely depends on the other things going on around her birthday. some years she’s spent the day sitting in a pile of books and studying for law school, in the courthouse running from floor to floor to make it to each of the scheduled cases she had, hosting grand birthdays, and some have just been spent in bed because she can’t fathom standing on her own two feet with all the hecticness of her life.
jen is a party girl at heart. she loves a social occasion, a get together, anything and everything that she gets to do with her friends and any excuse to see them all in one place. she values the people in her life so dearly – though at times she needs a break from everyone and wishes she could throw her phone out the penthouse window and fall off the grid – and she’s a very excellent host. any excuse to host, to have people together in the same space, in the midst of everyone’s busy lives is one that she hates to pass up.
this year she’s really excited to be having a party, and to have so many familiar and wonderful faces all gathered in the same space. it’s pretty awesome it’s her birthday, but more than anything she’s just glad to be amongst friends. do you know how hard it is to coordinate the schedules of the avengers?

“hey, happy birthday.” cliff can't be described as much else other than sheepish, shoulders hunched up by his ears and a faint, awkward blush at the tips of his ears. he hasn't celebrated anybody's birthday in 80 years and it feels like trying to fly a plane sitting backwards in his seat to do so now. “this is for you,” pulling his hands out from behind his back reveals a simple, store-bought birthday card and a set of shoe inserts. they're not anything fancy, just something he grabbed from the isle of the drugstore that he bought the card in, but, “my bets was wearing shoes all the time like yours and she'd come home at the end of the day complainin' about how uncomfortable they were. thought maybe these'd be nice for you.”
it’s not every day that a blush manages to break through the green hue and cover all of jen’s cheeks. she holds up one end of the flouncy yellow scarf over her face as she chuckles behind it, taking in cliff’s well done deckard costume. dropping the scarf, she takes both of his gifts with wide eyes and the most earnest and endeared of smiles. just the way the flier talks, well she’s kind of a sucker. he talks so fondly of his bets, so truthfully, and so old fashioned that it’s charmed her without any extra effort at all.
“ how did you – thank you, cliff. ” she turns over both the card and the inserts in her hand, observing them carefully. how did he know her shoe size? how did he find it in her shoe size? she kicks back a heel looking at the bottom of her shoe and then the inserts to compare. bending down, she places her empty palm against his cheek before delivering a soft kiss to the other. “ i’m so glad you could make it. ”
