For the 28th Tokyo Motor Show in 1989, Mazda prepared a Type A rally car based on the 7th generation Familia (BG series), featuring a turbocharged 1.8-litre engine, an all-wheel-drive system, and a carbon-fibre body kit. Two prototype Mazda Familia Sport-4 cars were built (one red, one black), but the cars became a testbed for later production models like the Familia GT-R.
