So both the weird route and the genocide route are all about changing the games world in a negative way to satiate your curiosity, we can all agree about that. They're both very similar in a lot of ways. But there's absolutely a diffference: The connection to the games world and story. The genocide route is about a disregard for the games story. you blow through most of the bosses in one hit with the sole exceptions of undyne and sans. you don't learn anything new about every character except for sans and arguably flowey, but you wouldn't really learn those things until the very end of the game after disregarding everything else. It's all about disconnecting yourself from the game's world and story and seeing what happens when you push it to the limit.

But the weird route? Oh, the weird route is the exact opposite. It's still about your curiosity, but your level of investment in the characters is the exact opposite. The weird routes driving force is being too invested in the characters. You're so invested in them you want to see what happens when you put them through hell. You want to see what these characters are like at their worst, how they'll respond to all of this psychological trauma. It's intensely character focused, with no real changes to the gameplay from a normal route outside of the spamton neo fight. hell, it's so character focused that you straight up skip the main gameplay of chapter 5.

That's probably also why it's so hard to activate accidentally. There are absolutely people who could've done a genocide route on their first run because the activation requirements are pretty easy, just grind EXP until you're maxed out. It still fits the narrative of being disconnected from the story too, since you're not engaging with the games story very much since it heavily incentivizes sparing your enemies. But the weird route is convoluted, requires backtracking, without any indication for a first time player. The only hint to it comes the next chapter, and it's only in the sword route, a secret a first time player probably wont get.
