The stages of recovery
Stage 1:
I walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. I am lost. I am helpless. It isn’t my fault. It takes forever to find a way out. Stage 2: I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don’t see it. I fall in again. I can’t believe I am in this same place. But it isn’t my fault. It still takes a long time to get out. Stage 3: I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it is there. I fall in…it’s a habit…but my eyes are open. I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately. Stage 4: I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it. Stage 5: I walk down a different street.

Are you recovering or relapsing?
Having asked myself this hundreds of times, I came up with an acronym - CONSIDER
C - control - how much do you feel the need to control the size/type/nutrition of the food you eat?
O - obsessed - how often do you feel fixated on thoughts of food?
N - numbers - how much of your day is taken up by thoughts of calories, grams, pounds etc?
S - sick - are you purging in any way?
I - ill - do you often feel unwell, tired or weak?
D - defensive - do you often get upset or annoyed when people question your eating habits?
E - exercise - are you exercising more often than you should or do you feel like you need to do a certain amount every day?
R - relapse/recovery - think about your answers to honestly tell yourself which way you’re heading right now.
I’m not a professional! But I think these questions might be helpful for other people to determine where they’re at with their eating disorder right now.
