I think accessories speak to strangers who might become friends. People do judge other people unconsciously based on a judgment posed in a fraction of a second. Every level of engaging with femininity is meant to signify something. It’s an active choice, in the same way that smoking cigarettes is an active choice. If it doesn’t seem like ceasing to shave your legs is a feasible goal, maybe start with the armpits. Ask yourself: Would a well-groomed man do what I’m about to do? If not, why? Why am I subject to this tax on my money and time? It’s tempting to think there’s a one size fits all “just stop everything all at once” answer that applies to all women but that’s simply not compatible with many people’s actual lives. I think we should celebrate and uplift any woman in our lives who has made a choice to stop engaging in a beauty ritual that no longer serves her.
