Here's a post 'A life to love' ending scene i've wanted to paint ever since i finished the game.

I picked Verso's ending because it seemed like a pragmatic choice if you only take into consideration the Dessendre and their relationship with the canvas and their grief. But as i kept thinking about it i ended up thinking about Maellicia and how I'd feel if i were in her place.

#‘‘her life as maelle is as real to her as her life as alicia’’ rly the crux of grasping that this story—#isn’t just A tragedy but Her tragedy regardless of which path is taken at the end #schrodinger’s tragedy. if you will.#the painting isn’t a matrix her memories and experiences as maelle are not illusions #it’s a real tangible seperate universe and she lived a whole other lifetime inside it!!#i think a huge part of why her ending hits better for me is bc this really is her story and given her desperation to assert herself #i find myself more compelled by an end that she chooses for herself over an ending that happens to her #even ((maybe even especially)) if it comes with massive asterisks.#every debate i’ve seen about this where people moralize over their choice still seems to really come down to like.#what do you respond to more. narratively and thematically.#so all that said i do appreciate verso’s ending when we’re acknowledging and appreciating the gravity of what’s been lost #and verso cradling maelle and telling her ‘it’s okay’ in a big brother voice makes me wanna rip my fucking teeth out in a good way. so.#they’re both devastating endings and they’re both equally ‘canon’ it came free with your nier inspired video game!#anyway this art is beautiful and makes my brain spin every time i look at it #clair obscur #fanart
