Rather than replying individual messages, I decided to make a post.
Reasons why I don't debate/argue with people on Tumblr.
Tumblr stopped being an activism space 3 years ago. Now, it is just a hobby for me. It is the equivalent of being on Instagram or even Pinterest.
Not to be all ad hominem but I assume most people on this website are non-black. Debating non-black (especially white) people online for free is not something I want to do in my spare time.
I am impatient so I need people to be on a certain intellectual level before engaging with them. If you are still learning ABCs (so to speak), I cannot do the hand holding and spoon feeding. I already do that in my professional career so my patience is thin.
I can't actually be sure if I am talking to a mature and sane adult or a maladjusted person with too much access to the Internet. If you push too hard or use harsh words, next thing you know, someone is claiming to be an underage autistic double amputee and accusing you of bullying them. And then others jump on that bandwagon and call you a bully at best, child abuser at worst.
Radical feminists are expected to turn the other cheek when being insulted and I am not going to do that. I will most likely curse people out regardless of the age/disability status/whatever they put in their profile.
It is very difficult to determine if a person has a willingness to learn/change or if they are just "own" you. Debating people who are just trying to own you (offline or online) is a waste of your time and mental strength.
I think voice inflections are very important for communication. With text, it is very easy to misunderstand what a person is trying to say because you can't hear their voice.
I was raised Christian and many of family members are tongue speaking Christians so I know first hand that is practically impossible to get people to change their minds and let go of harmful ideologies. I decided to give up Christianity on my own. I came to my own conclusions based on the available evidence. Nobody had to convince me to give up Christianity. Nobody convinced me to become a radical feminist either. I just read reports, watched documentaries and read stats and realised that male violence (physical, domestic, economic, reproductive, etc) against women & girls is omnipresent.
From my personal observations, trying to convince people to change their minds causes them to double down on their beliefs and more often than not because it is seen as an attack against them as people rather than an attack against their ideology. I believe trying to convince people to change their minds might actually be slowing down their "awakening".
There are many radical feminists on Tumblr who still treat Tumblr as a consciousness raising platform and they are open and patient enough to deal with all that comes with that. I am not one of them so don't expect me to act like one.
PS: Even with offline consciousness raising, I recommend avoiding people who are just trying to "own" a feminist.
