Humdrum Theory

I re-read Carry On and I think I figured something out.

At the end of the previous year the humdrum supposedly kidnaps Simon and Penny, snatching them all the way from Watford to a dead spot near one of Simon’s old homes. Maybe to get him to go off, that’s what the Humdrum usually does. But we never see the humdrum do anything like that again. The Humdrum can’t do magic, it just pushes void into things. That’s how it sends creatures to get Simon, pushing out their magic so they seek out Simon like a light house. It dosen’t do spells. Also, Penny says that’s supposed to be impossible, teleporting someone that far.

The spot they get teleported to isn’t even a dead spot. Penny says it’s a dying spot, that she can feel it losing it’s magic. Why? Simon didn’t go off. It dosn’t make sense with what we find out about what the Humdrum is and how it works, so how did they get there?

I think Simon did it. By accident, of course. I think he accidentally teleported himself all the way back to his old children’s home, and that took so much magic that is made a dead spot. Why? Because he and Penny were “kidnapped” right when he saw Baz holding Agatha’s hands in the woods.

I think Simon was so upset when he saw Agatha and Baz that he wished himself away, just like he wished himself wings. Now that I’m writing this it seems obvious, so maybe I’m late to the party, but I didn’t piece that together the first time. Especially because you don’t find out that Baz and Agatha in the woods lined up with the “kidnapping” until a little ways in to the book.
