I spent way too much time on this ✌
dunno if anyone's done this one before but anyway
Imagine how fun it is to have a near apoplectic fit whilst people chase after you and address your shadow lmfao
I cannot get over how much Thaisha saved everyone’s asses by running the Halovars off in episode 31.
Because even if the dice gods had been on their side and the Magpies kicked ass, they still attacked two Halovars and a member of the Revolutionary Council. The rebellion would be officially kicked off, and they still don’t have the supplies they’re waiting on from Timmony. Azune and Hal would have to go into hiding. There would be no chance of getting backing from the Council, because one of their members had been caught in the crossfire.
And in terms of public sentiment, none of the witnesses would have any context for what happened. All they saw was the Halovar forces walk up to a tavern and get met with a hail of crossbow bolts. The Photarch could spin that any way she wanted, and the Magpies would have a hard time countering that narrative.
But instead, what everyone saw was two Halovars, forty soldiers, and a Council member get sent scrambling by a stern word and a bit of lightning from Thaisha. There’s no way for the crowd to interpret that beyond “The Halovars don’t have as much control of the city as they want us to think. The Lloys, and the Druids, still hold more sway here.” It’s an incredibly humiliating setback for the Halovars, and it’s caused friction between them and the Council that the Schemers can exploit. And for the Magpies, it’s bought them crucial time to wait for reinforcements and continue laying the groundwork for the rebellion.
So everyone say thank you, Thaisha, for being such a stone cold badass.

one day i’ll attempt an evil origin run with her but until then have this shadowheart rolling around in flowers
No, Bolaire's behavior around food is not a good metaphor for an eating disorder, or at least not one that centers Bolaire The Character. (I also don’t really think metaphor is quite the right word, but let’s ignore that for simplicity.) Anyway: Bolaire does not experience hunger. He does not experience metabolic physical nourishment from eating. He does not have an organic physical body at all. He does not personally experience health consequences for his eating patterns. It is his host who suffers, full stop. While some of his behaviors may—without context—echo irl disordered eating habits, such as restricting intake or buying more to disguise that restriction, the strength of comparison immediately collapses because he is not doing it to himself. A better actual metaphor would be starving a prisoner or not maintaining your car, externalizing your own feelings on someone or something else under your control.
And look, I'm not here to tell anyone they can't personally identify with a character for any reason, or that we can't use Bolaire's behavior as an analogy for disordered eating. Absolutely someone could watch Bolaire mechanically eating a shred of jerky and think, I have been like that, I have resented that my body needs nourishment, I have felt like my body is a thing I am separate from. But per above we can’t make a strong representative connection that honors this sentiment (Bolaire’s actions can sometimes emulate disordered eating) and the facts of the text (the one Bolaire is depriving is actually his host) unless we zoom out and treat host and mask as a symbolic connected unit, a single person, where Bolaire is the disordered mentality itself. Anyone can be affected by disordered eating; once the mentality (the mask of Bolaire, in this metaphor) is on, you feel out of control, your basic needs suppressed as inconvenient, undesirable, and deeply contemptible, and you neglect your own body even though you desperately need to eat, you are cruel to it, and you hide this from your friends and family, who you may also push away and become a stranger to. You might genuinely die this way. If only you could be free of these feelings, this mask you're wearing! With some external help, maybe you could take it off. Taliesin has said before that Bolaire is intended to portray themes of dissociation, and tbh this metaphor works really well for that too. An alienation from the self.
But if you read that and thought, hey, Bolaire doesn't represent a negative mentality! This isn't about the hosts, he's his own little guy on a journey with his own anxieties and behaviors, independently! Then congrats, we have determined that the disordered eating metaphor lives best above the story and maybe isn't the best fit for what's going on with him as a character in-game except as the most surface-level resemblance. And you can do both btw: enjoy the character in-story and also enjoy metaphors they inform above the text that may not, strictly speaking, be “complimentary” to the character themself. But I do think that if we try to make this about “Bolaire has a metaphorical eating disorder within the narrative”, we are ignoring his mechanics and airballing pretty egregiously on more incisive symbolism.

i'm finally getting caught up on cr4 e31 and man. the clear influences of the player's real life culture in their characters (and in the worldbuilding in brennan's case) is amazing and adds such a richness. like thaisha is so clearly influenced by like. black american folk culture Especially with the orcish revolutionaries. idk if liam is irish but he's at least running with a lot of the irish american working class stuff brennan injected into the world in terms of the hal and the culture of the round. and azune's whole bit about not having anyone to speak his native language to and his disconnect to his own identity (diaspora narrative). i Love when real world cultures are reflected in fiction it's so good.
#and what Robbie is doing with Katt seems to be very much exploring the unchecked violence against native women and children in the USA
oh fuck you're right. you're totally right that's exactly the allegory.
@hemisphaericas hope it’s okay to save your tags, Rose, they’re very very good!!!
