So for the first 30 or so episodes of the campaign, I've seen a lot of ships being discussed. Some have fallen into the "I absolutely agree" category, some in the "I don't think so but I see why people are interested" category and a few in the "What? Why?" category.
The Occtis and Julien one falls into the last category. I didn't see it but wondered if that would change later down the line; wouldn't be the first time that it wouldn't be until after a specific moment that I would go "Okay, now I am with you; 100%."
That changed entirely after episode 31. I do not see the ship and I don't think unless something drastic happens I ever will.
Now. If we are talking about them forming a sibling like bond instead, THAT I would immediately agree too after everything they were talking about.
Because THAT is the vibe I have been getting from these two for a long time and it was firmly cemented with everything in E31.
And I would love that for our necromancer wizard so much; to have a brother he can bicker and argue with as equals; who protects him and who he protects. Who pushes his buttons in a way that allows him to push back and grow. And eventually learn to trust beyond the battlefield.
And I would love for our daring knight to have the same in him.
They both need someone like that in their life.
To me, that is far more interesting than any potentially romantic feelings developing between them.
(Mind you, I wouldn't ever want people to stop shipping them; by all means follow what your heart wants! I just feel like a non-romantic relationship between these two would be more rewarding.)
Does Occtis have any nieces or nephews? Sibling In-laws?
Like, he’s the youngest of 8 at the age of 20, meaning it would make sense for his older siblings to be engaged/married and/or have kids/be ready to have kids.
so, petra and ryah are (allegedly) in their late 30s maybe early 40s, and they have their own freaky shit going on so passing by them,
but Koral? the unnamed other half of the temporal bone sibling? probably in their 30s, maybe late 20s depending on how much of a gap there is in age.
Then there’s Frons (rip), and another unnamed sibling (who in my head i’ve been calling sphen) who like are probably mid-late 20s early 30s?

i am personally not a fan of how some people appear to have drawn the conclusion that people should consider any of these pairings as "canon" when, from my perspective, fans are reading into their own personal interpretation of a dynamic that they want to see while simultaneously ignoring the dynamics these characters canonically have with other characters, namely ones that the actors themselves have pointed out. people should be more open to the idea that others have different (valid!) perspectives. (also what happened to shipping what you want despite it not being canon?)
i used to be interested in the occtien/knightingale dynamic in the beginning, but some fans quickly started shoehorning Thaisha into the role of Julien & Occtis' mom when Aabria was EXPLICITLY against that interpretation of her character considering she ships Julien & Thaisha, and Julien & Thaisha have also explicitly expressed their attraction towards one another. their relationship being conveniently ignored for the sake of a specific yaoi dynamic gave me the misogynoir ick and turned me away from the pairing. let's disregard the Davinlloy potential by forcing Thaisha into the role of a mammy once again!
i still see the potential in occtis and julien for what it is - but nothing they have done so far has indicated to me that either of them are attracted to the other.
same with thimble and occtis' interactions - their care for each other could be read in a platonic/familial way. thimble and occtis are very close to one another and have been friends for a while, constantly wanting to be by each other's side through their hardships, and that could turn into something more if either of them lean into it. i personally like the dynamic because i'm a big fan of the classic friends-to-lovers, but also i'm a fan of whatever relationship thimble & occtis develop even if it's not romantic
the only thing Alex has said in regards to the potential of relationships has been:
1.) occtis is not interested in a relationship at the moment
2.) occtis had a childhood crush on thimble
3.) jokes about kocctis
when occtigan/kocctis is put on the table - most of the foundation of the pairing comes from Robbie & Alex saying that they might romance each other, and there's only been a resurgence because kattigan has expressed attraction towards occtis in episode 31.
Alex also shared with fans in a conversation during Phoenix Fan Fusion that Robbie really loved coming up with ideas to feed the Occtigan shippers (speaking about future episodes), and that has also contributed to the fan interpretation of their dynamic.
but even with the above i don't consider occtis & kattigan canon because we have yet to see ANYTHING palpable happen between them besides their handful of scenes, if anything it's just a one-sided flirtation
with regards to Occtien - Julien clearly cares about Occtis to an extent, while Occtis doesn't think anyone cares about him except Thimble and Thaisha. But this care doesn't specifically read to me as romantic - in fact, it seemed to parallel Teor & Cyd and Bolaire & Termina. it paralleled how Julien was missing Alba, with Julien killing Koral + Occtis not having a good relationship with his siblings.
To me, it seemed like Julien began caring about Occtis as if he were a mentor/brother to him - and many other people have that reading of it, too. Occtis has studied Julien, but Occtis has also studied Thaisha and Vaelus and mimicked their magic. I don't consider that to be done out of attraction - in fact Occtis saying "I'm done pretending that I give a shit about you!" in an effort to go rescue Thimble indicates the opposite
not to mention the Tale Gate incident in which a fan asked if Julien would take Occtis to a brothel to have an orgy in order to teach him how to have sex. Matt looked uncomfortable, shaking his head 'no' while Alex clarified how Occtis would be deeply uncomfortable with the idea
my own conversation with Alex Ward in the beginning of June has contributed to my interpretation of occtien, in which he shared with me that he thinks Occtis & Thimble as a ship makes more sense than Occtis & Julien.
ultimately, you don't have to care about the actors or how they do actual play. you don't have to have the official approval of the creators. have fun playing with blorbos in a world where you imagine their dynamic flourishing romantically. but you can't expect other people to immediately be on board or see what you see or claim things as canon until they are lmao

it is genuinely wild to me that some people did NOT like the dynamic of the seekers table. Like, different strokes for different folks I guess, but also it was sooooo juicy. Their dynamic is still my favorite even though we have since converged and will be re-splitting the group.
i've also been enjoying lately a) how much people are into alex committing to occtis being hurt in the background, and b) how much everyone who's seen la by night agrees it's the pinnacle of this type of alex acting (it is), so you know what, have a compilation i made for a friend a while ago of various background moments in the episode following jasper getting very hurt bc it's such a treat!
(for those who might need context, they just rescued him from an attempted execution, and vampires being able to survive a massive stab wound to the heart and lung doesn't mean it's a pleasant experience!)

i am genuinely excited for some occtis kattigan interactions, because outside of that moment in ep31 we really haven’t had a whole bunch (I mean a tiny bit during the overture and stuff but 🤷‍♀️), and i feel like their dynamic could be wonderful and hilarious.
like robbie is so funny and so good at breaking tension in a wonderful way, i’m expecting that to lead to some peak moments in general tbh, but i would particularly love some body horror undead shenanigans (and of course more of pin and wulfric being besties).
