I also think it is possible and probably even more canon-aligned to have the Hunter emotional incest discussion without it getting sexual or even romantic! it's less specifically that he wants them romantically and more generally that he cannot disentangle from them or conceptualize himself separately from them, and the way he feels bonded to them is more total and all-consuming than something that could be appropriately sorted into a "normal" sibling relationship. it's the same deal as how he can't separate being their sergeant and their older brother and so can't handle the changing dynamics in that regard. he can't separate romantic from platonic love because he's never had to. he's only ever had his brothers. and so of COURSE he's jealous of Phee. why wouldn't he be? Tech is his! and it explains so much about how he is in Sanctuary. becoming a civilian seems to necessitate letting go of his brothers. sharing. that's not something compatible with anything about Hunter!!!!

actually speaking of the longfic wip I keep having my internal debate over whether or not to make the shippy undertones explicit or not. bc part of the driving force of a lot of the emotional aspects is the level of repression Hunter is operating on and the tension created by the way adapting to civilian life seems to involve sharing and letting go of his brothers. and it just doesn't quite hit the same if the reader is not painfully aware of hunter's painful unawareness of how badly he wants them

my go to polybatch take is they've just always been together and if you asked they might not even call it romantic. they're just everything to each other. that's how it is. BUT I do think the sheer energy generated by the amount of repression they'd have to be working under to NOT be romantically involved by the time of the series could make fascinating things happen
My other take on this is it’s also interesting and worth the lack of explicit polybatch if it’s a Hunter Problem. If it’s Hunter being way too attached and being the only one on that level of inability to disentangle. I’m kinda going with this as an unspoken thing in my otherwise gen Hunter longfic and I think it’s sooooo tasty especially in a techphee context. I think it leads to shit like this (notes from the longfic draft document)

Another thing about "Aftermath" that I'm highly fixated on is that when the Batch get to Kaller, before Order 66 gets called, they're fighting the battle droids and at one point Hunter gives Crosshair an order and Crosshair over in his sniper's perch, gives a genuinely enthusiastic "Sir, yes sir!" with a slight purr. Man wants to be topped by his sergeant so bad
AU where Crosshair doesn’t receive Order 66 because they finished the battle half an hour earlier. And when the order is translated Hunter is happily railing him against the nearby tree, both helms off.
There’s a moment when Crosshair blinks and says half-heartedly “Good soldiers follow orders?..” But Hunter growls to him, “Yeah, Cross, so good for me…”, and the weird feeling gets fucked out of Crosshair’s ears completely.
