Surveillance footage showed that Hawkins, unarmed at first, entered the south entrance of the Von Maur department store at about 1:36 p.m. CST (19:36 UTC). After walking a short distance into the store, he scanned the area, turned around and left. Returning six minutes later through the same entrance, he proceeded directly to the elevator at his immediate right, this time with a Century WASR-10 (a commercial copy of the AKM (7.62×39mm) semi-automatic rifle stolen from his stepfather’s house, along with two 30-round magazines taped together, concealed in a sweatshirt. He took the elevator to the top floor.

At approximately 1:43 p.m. CST (19:43 UTC), Hawkins stepped out of the elevator on the third floor and opened fire. He killed eight people and wounded four others over the course of six minutes, before committing suicide by shooting himself up the chin near the customer service desk. He fired more than 30 rounds, striking 12 people. Six were killed instantly, one died before reaching the hospital, and another died 45 minutes after reaching the ER of another hospital.

Omaha Police arrived at Westroads Mall about six minutes after receiving the first 911 call. Audio tapes and transcripts of the 911 calls, along with images captured by mall security surveillance cameras, were released by the police on December 7, 2007. In one 911 call, gunshots can be heard.

Matthew Joseph Kechter (February 19, 1983 – April 20, 1999) was an American student and the eighth murder victim at the Columbine High School Massacre.

Matthew was studying at the library with his friends Isaiah Shoels and Craig Scott (Rachel Scott's brother). All three are hiding under Table 16. When Dylan approached Table 16, he found Isaiah under the table and called Eric over by making a racist comment. Dylan then tried to drag Isaiah off the table but he struggled to do so. Eric approaches Isaiah, kneels down, and shoots him in the chest, killing him. Then Dylan shoots Matthew in the chest, killing him also. But Craig was left uninjured when fire alarms went off and startled the attackers who fled.

Matt Kechter was a sturdy 210-pound Sophomore: He played on both the offensive and defensive lines of the football team. He's remembered for his ready laugh. He was a weight lifter and an 'A' student, always getting good grades in school.

"When I heard he was one of the ones from the library, it only made sense," said sophomore basketball player and close friend Greg Barnes. "He was always in the library studying. He always put academics first. He had straight A's but he would never brag about it. I kinda looked up to him because of it. He was never in a bad mood, he was consistently happy." Tragically, Greg committed suicide shortly following the 1st 'anniversary' of the shootings at Columbine. "He was a wonderful role model for his little brother," his parents wrote in a statement that was read at his funeral at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church on April 27. "Their brotherhood had just recently developed into a bonding friendship ... In Matt's heart, there was always enough room for everyone to be victorious."

The University of Colorado (where Matt had planned to attend) sent his younger brother Adam one of their jerseys bearing Matt's name and the jersey number he wore, 70, as part of Columbine's football team. The Columbine High School football team all wore ribbons bearing his old jersey number were asked to dedicate the next season to Matt's memory at his funeral service. Matt was buried at the Mount Olivet Cemetery, alongside Daniel Mauser and Kelly Fleming.

In September of 1999, Matt Kechter was posthumously accepted into the National Honor Society.

If you know a good amount about Columbine then you know that Eric and Dylan brought knives with them when they committed the massacre. It has been said that the two did not use their knives during the whole ordeal. Well, they didn’t kill anybody with them but did they use them for other purposes?

In my spare time I like to read the 11k report. This is over eleven thousand pages of witness accounts, transcripts, and many other police documents regarding the Columbine massacre. While reading this I came across one witness account that interested me.

This is Daniel Steepleton. He was present in the library during the shooting and suffered from a gunshot wound to his knee. He provided some interesting information that I don’t think has been talked about.

After Eric and Dylan had attacked him and the students he was hiding with, Steepleton recalls hearing the following incident:

“Steepleton then heard one of the suspects say, ‘Stand up nigger boy!’. The suspects were laughing. Steepleton then heard gunfire immediately after this statement.”

This would be the death of Isaiah Shoels. Here comes the interesting part.

“He could hear the suspects laughing. One suspect said, ‘Let me see your knife, I’ve always wanted to do this’. Steepleton stated when he heard the comment, he thought the suspects were cutting up a dead person because he heard no screaming after the statement. He then heard one of the suspects say, ‘Oh, that’s gross’. The two suspects then laughed. Steepleton could not say which suspects made which comment.” 

This gives us the idea that knives were used and maybe on the corpse of Isaiah Shoels. I’m not going to just assume that this is correct so I examined Isaiah’s autopsy report.

In the report, it states that:

“Located in the posterior (back) aspect of the left upper triceps area is an irregular, oval defect in the skin which measures 4.3 x 4 cm. The skin margins are ragged and irregular skin tags caused by small secondary skin lacerations.”

You might be thinking ‘Huh?’. Well, let me explain. 

What the report is stating is that Isaiah had small lacerations on his body. 

A laceration is defined as ‘a deep cut or tear in skin or flesh’. 

This clearly states that cuts were present on Isaiah’s body! If you read further on, the autopsy states that he also had at least one more of these wounds.

This backs up the theory that Eric and Dylan did use their knives during the massacre.
