The visual style of his paintings was so distinctive and arresting that, at a glance, you knew they were his.

When the Brushes app arrived on the iPhone, he immediately gravitated to it, the tactility and unmediated directness of this finger-painting style irresistible. He worked extensively on the iPhone and iPad, even commissioning a bespoke version of the app from the company when a new iteration added bells and whistles that took away from the original purity of purpose.

He was a scholar and theorist of the visual. No Conceptualist he, his canvases are figurative to the point of being immersive, as he came to fame capturing the light of his adopted California and its play on surfaces.

In 2000, The New Yorker wrote at length on his theory that Old Masters had used a camera lucida to draw as well and accurately as they did.

During his life, he became the artist whose paintings sold for the highest sums then recorded, with Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) selling for $90.3 million at Christie's in 2018.

This popularity grew out of the surface accessibility of his work. Which was always deeper, at second glance, than the sunbathed figures of his early work.
