βStill time to run.β
John looks into the mirror, past his own stony eyes and towards Curtβs equally blue ones, up on a stool so he can help fasten the straps around Johnβs shoulders, anchoring the his pauldron. βTheyβd shoot me out of suspicion before I hit the gates.βΒ
Curt tsks, βIβd make enough'a distraction.β
John grins, turning and cupping both of Curtβs cheeks and pressing a smacking kiss to his lips. βItβs my wedding, Curt, ainβt that something to smile about?β
βA political marriage seems more like a business deal than a party to me.β
βHow about for all the wine weβre about to drink.β
βHuman wine tastes like shit.β
John flicks the end of Curtβs ear, the delicately pointed tips not all that sensitive but certainly vulnerable to attack.Β
Curt ducks, gracefully dignified, βYour sister sent a raven this morning. She knows youβre being insulted; if you want to call his play, she will stand by you.βΒ
John snorts, turning back to the mirror and examinging his armor. βAnd waste the party?β
βBucky.β
If John has been allowed his way heβd be dressed in the lighter battle armor he was used toβ scarred and dented and decorated by every time it had saved his life. Heβd go out there and show them that even if peace was right around the corner, John and his kin were still ever-ready. Naturally, the notion had been vetoed and instead John had been buffed and shined and stuck into a suit of bronze colored armor carved all over with vines that tapered to drapes of berries over his shoulders, his chestplate. The chainmail beneath a white steel, his shoulder draped with a red cloth stitched with gold thread.
Theyβd woven blackberries in his hair. The scent drifts around him with each step, sweet and perfrectly ripe.Β
He glances at Curt again who was now busy fastening his own bronze armor, βA curious turn of events, Edith having your ear over mine.β
βShe says she figured youβd actually consider it if there were witnesses.β
βAlmost sounds like sheβs hoping Iβll rise to the bait.β
βHumans canβt even make peace without spitting in your eye.β
John dons his weapons belt; fits it with his sword and dagger. βItβs a political marriage, Curt. So what if they think theyβre offering me some goddamn offense. A prince is as good as a princess.βΒ
βMaybe after the nuptiuals, but theyβll be snickering all through the ceremony.βΒ
βSo let them. Iβm here to end this damn war; not give in to the opinions of small human lords and sycophants.βΒ
Curt settles down into one of the chairs at a table still covered with the remnants of their breakfast. He drags an armored finger back and forth across his top lip, eyes gazing off at some halfway mark, thoughtful. βWe fought against him, you know. At Red River; that commander that shattered our left flank.β
so like. John's an elf

reminds me of this one time i went to give a blowjob to this really sexy 38 yo man who was very masculine, wore a leather jacket, and smelled really strongly of mens cologne; i remember i got down on my knees and he was caressing my face while i was unbuttoning his pants and to my surprise when i pulled down his pants he was wearing lace panties and fishnet garters. i remember how he was looking at me while i sucked his big cock. yes i swallowed
Things we donβt need to hear!

~ w.i.p. tuesday~
i suppose lol. dunno if i'm going to finish this but... i mean, possessive gale anyone...
John once hadβ or still has?β feelings for Manitowoc Buck. The very thought makes Gale grit his teeth. For the remainder of the evening, he keeps his hand casually on John. His thigh, when they're sitting, his wrist or bicep whenever else. A quiet, completely unsubtle claim; mine. Every time Manitowoc Buck teases John in that way that only a friend known since childood can, a quiet reminder that there was a life before Gale, it makes his stomach roil. Something hot and uncomfortable prickles just beneath the surface of his skin.
btw john is half flirting with other buck on purpose bc he usually tops but he wants to get gale so pissed off that he takes him home and immediately rails him

Something hot and uncomfortable prickles just beneath the surface of his skin.
throwing this up here bc idk if i'll ever finish...a chunk of boxing AU
A pair of skinny legs swing out as Gale settles on the windowsill just out of reach. They look everywhere but at each otherβthe taller flat-roofed hotel across the empty street, the strip of one- or two-storied buildings flanking it, all of them covered in gloom by a cloudy sky overhead.
John knocks the back of his head on the wall behind him and focuses on the staticky scrape of hair meeting brick. In the quiet, it's easy to pretend that the two of them made it out together; that they're here by choice, living out the ending they were supposed to get. It's a fresh wound every time, being close enough to see an outcome but never quite making it happen, or otherwise fucking it up so bad that it was better left to fester and rot into nothing. He wonders if he'll ever get used to it.Β
When he passes the bottle over, Gale takes it, likely only to slow down his pace of drinking. Having disarmed himself, John's got nothing to do with his hands so he buries them in his hair and looks at the hotel again, at the marquee blinking at nothing.
"Dog that bites its owner oughta be put down," he says vaguely.
For a few seconds, Gale doesn't respond, and then he huffs in a rueful kind of amusement. Years later and evidently he hasn't lost the skill for parsing John's words into what he actually means.
"You didn't bite me. I was always telling you to get away from the posts," Gale says, studying the bottle before taking a quick swig. "Should've listened to my own goddamn self."
John works past the growing thickness in his throat. "It was my fault."
Another huff. "Cut it out now. That's the drink talkin'."
"I'm not drunk," John counters.
"Then you got no excuse. How many times are we gonna do this?"
"They sent you home because of me."
"Wasn't 'cause of you," Gale says, rote.
"They sent you home. You couldn't fly anymore," John presses. "That didn't get to you?"
Gale picks at the label. He's smiling, sort of. Like it's all some big joke, absent and detached, the one he puts on when he wants to float above what's actually happening. "At the rate we were going, I would've gotten shot down, too. Hell, we might've even ended up in the same stalag."
It's John's turn to laugh hollowly. He can't picture it in the least. Gale would've made it to twenty-five, safe and sound, and sat with his feet kicked up at Thorpe Abbotts just waiting for John to scrape his way back to him.Β
"Yeah," he says. "Sure."
Bit by bit, the label peels away under Gale's graceful fingers, his silence hitting the brakes on the conversation yet again. Last time they'd been in a Jeep, and he had been fiddling with the buttons on his uniform; before that, in the barracks as he packed up his trunk, and before that, in the infirmary where he kept scratching at the tufts of gauze wrapping around his skull; and at the very beginning, crumpled small on the canvas, blinking up at John with an eye that was already filled through with red like a ruby hammered into the socket.
Gale breathes out. It's what resignation sounds like on him, spare and controlled. To John, it's hope for what could finally be his long-awaited comeuppance, except Gale just keeps fiddling with the label, and then he wipes at his mouth and says, quietly, "I'm sorry I wasn't there with you, Bucky," as if thatβthat is what's been killing him this entire time.Β
John snaps his gaze over, thrown off, something adjacent to furious that Gale is refusing to give what he's so plainly been begging for.Β
"You're sorry," he states. "What the fuck for?"
"Buckyβ"
"Jesus Christ. You haven't evenβyou told me to come here, to apologize, and you haven't even let me do that, so just what the hell are we doing? Why did you even write me that goddamned letter, huh?" he spits, possibly the first direct question he's posed since being here.Β
The letter. The fucking letter that Crank had handed it over a few months prior in the middle of winter, before the march but after John had made a break for the fence. Crank hadn't been speaking to him much then, even though John had sworn not to try it again, because he had also sworn not to try it in the first place and gone and done it anyway. The letter that's still sitting at the bottom of his duffel, unredacted only due to the fact there was hardly anything written at all: Crank tells me you're trying your damndest to become a martyr out there. Well, quit it. You owe me an apologyβand that's face to face, not in writing, unsigned and sounding so wholly unlike Gale that John had stayed up nights just to try to picture him saying the words out loud.Β
At length, Gale says, "I couldn't think of anything else that would stop you from doing something stupid."
John bristles. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means I know you," Gale snaps back. "You choose guilt, every single time. Gotta be alive to feel that properly, don't you?"βlike an accusation, wielded in that one-of-a-kind way only a best friend can. The way only someone who loves someone else can.Β
John straightens. "So here I am, Major. What now?" he goads. "What do you want from me?"
"What do you want? An eye for an eye? You think thatβll make you feel any better? You think that'd solve anything for me?" Gale asks, and without thinking, John says, "It would."
"It would," Gale repeats with a snort.Β
"I mean it."
The only audible sound is a faint buzzing of electricity feeding through the street. John can almost feel it running right through him. He can almost see the fence bobbing in his vision, the expanse of freedom on the other side.Β
"Take it," he says.
Gale stares back at him, one blue eye and one a milky white, the scar as shiny as a silver dollar under the moonβthen he's dropping the bottle and climbing back through the window with jerky movements. Reflexively, John follows, grabbing his arm to yank him around once inside, and Gale pushes him hard enough to offset his balance but not enough to disturb his grip, because John's bigger. He's always been bigger.
"Take it," he urges again, hooking his free arm around Gale's nape, "get it out of me, fucking take it, Buckβ" and the name gets cut off when Gale smacks him, square on the temple and open-handed as if to reset his brain. Of course Gale doesn't know that's been attempted before, with metal instead of the flat of a warm palm, and it hadn't worked then, either.Β
John laughs again. He shakes his head like a dog drying its coat, jaw loose and pliant, then rears forward, pushing their foreheads together because he's got nowhere further to go. "You don't know what it feels like," he pants, heart squeezing with adrenaline as Gale gives him a dead stare from centimeters away, even as John pushes them another few steps, bone on bone.Β
"Quit it," Gale grits out.
"You don't have a single goddamn clue, you don'tβyou're not supposed to forgive me, you bastard. That's not what I want."
Another smack on his bad ear, a flash of vertigo with it. Their contact breaks as John reels to the side and Gale shoves at him wildly. "Since when have you ever gotten what you want?"
The cut of moon over his face is a brutal spotlight. John pays no heed to how the insult gouges itself into his ribs and takes that sharp chin in hand instead, just like he used to.
"That's right, Buck. I'm the biggest idiot on earth, wanting someoneβ" he squeezes, hooking his fingertips in harder when Gale tries to wrench away because this is as good a time as any to say it, half-buried under their heaving breaths "βwanting someone who's this soft, this weak, this cowardlyβ" and then there's a bright supernova of pain that flips the room upside down.Β
Time slows. He remembers, hazily, that vicious right hook, slashing in with a funny angle at the last minute, elbow and shoulder compensating to prevent any injury. Gale had been a beautiful fighter. John basks in the memory of it, even as his cheekbone pops and he ends up sprawled on the floor, arms spread wide and willing, giving Gale room to land atop him where he grabs a fistful of his shirt and yanks upward. At the exact instant another punch connects, Gale lets go and John's head turns into a falling stone, meeting hardwood in a sickening crack.Β
John spins. Floats. For a moment he's somewhere elseβa trundling wagon stacked with waxy limbsβon the canvas, watching Gale look up at himβa bombed-out city as smoke burns in his lungsβpushed up against the side of their combine, fighting off the rifle choked over his throatβstaring at Jack driving away with Gale in the passenger seat, head bobbing, looking perfectly unchanged from the backβΒ
He comes to in the dark, his own liquored breaths damp and echoing against the crook of his elbow.
"Bucky," Gale is saying from far away, "Jesus, Bucky," and John wants to tell him he's okay, he's fine, he can take it, but all that comes out are thin gasps. He reaches out blindly; drags Gale closer and pushes his wet face to Gale's shirtfront, against that bounding heart. "Bucky," Gale says again, closer now. "John. You with me, John?"Β
"Take it," John whispers, muffled into fabric, and Gale doesn't answer for long enough that John thinks maybe he didn't hear and maybe that would be alright, and then he feels a sigh pressed into his hair. Despite the pounding head, the burn trying to crawl up his throat in waves, the rhythm of Gale's heartbeat lulls him into a strange kind of peace he didn't know he was capable of anymore. He'd felt it when his fort had been shot down, and when he had been caught in the creek after days of wandering, and just now, under the force of Gale's knuckles, because there was respite to be found in a hovering inevitability finally coming to fruition.
I saw a guy in those ugly ass lululemon pants today and thought about the big law Buckies
THEIR LEGACY IS EVERLASTING
anon did you know that the official name of these pants is the βLululemon ABC Slim-Fit Golf Trouser(tm)β β¦ and the ABC is short for β¦ anti ball crushing β¦
Cannot think of a funny joke to tie this all together but I just needed to unburden myself
Actually, my hot take about Gale telling John that he reminds him of his father is the following: you know how some therapists believe that people choose their partner based on the Childhood Wound they need to revive and fix?
Literally that's what Galey did. And it worked. Fucking that huge losing dog of a man would literally Fix Him.

hiiii hope youβre doing well! Wondering what the biglaw buckies (and csts buckies!) are up to ! Canβt wait to read more of your writing !
Thank you lovely anon (and to everyone whoβs left me asks in the last few weeks!!) Between work and life stuff, things have been hectic but in a good way!
Thankfully I should have time in the next little while to answer some asks and post ch 8 of CSTS!! My current plan is to focus on finishing the next two chaps of CSTS (up until the end of Act 2 aka when the Buckies finally figure their shit out), then switch to finishing the biglaw Buckies fic, then back for Act 3. Cannot WAIT to share what Iβve been working on!
I don't even know what to say
ALEXANDER JEFFERSON in MASTERS OF THE AIR PART EIGHT β³ when are we gonna get into some heavier action?
I wonder what they put in gale that makes him our torture doll anyways I'm imagining him with a ruptured liver dying of what bucky should be dying π
I think there's an immediate answer (ausbut's suffers beautifully) & also something more linked with his status as a narrative foil to Bucky & in general the textual weave they're woven into. Pain & suffering are so fundamental to their characters (one could argue they're fundamental to the human experience) that taking them away is - I wouldn't say Wrong, I don't think there are rights or wrongs, but it would definitely make me miss something when exploring & playing with Concepts.
In particular with Gale & with his symbiotic relationship with John, I think (and I dare say we all agree on this, at least on a certain level) what makes them so compelling is not only their bestfriendism (which of course I enjoy immensely) but that linked with their "falling out" fight in the stalag. I don't think I would enjoy their dynamic as much if it weren't for the incompatibility, the suffering they are apparently unable to share, which in the end is also because they care too much about the other. In a way (to me at least) it felt like a real marital crisis (lol).
I'm still unsure about how to really analyse their punches; was John instigating Gale because he felt like Gale didn't care or because he was (amongst other things) scared that Gale was losing himself to hopelessness? Gale hesitated before punching John because he didn't want to hurt him (thinking he was acting Irrationally but knowing that it was how Bucky's elaborated grief) or because he didn't want /to be/ the one hurting him, mindful of their mingled pasts (in this case, him saying You remind me of my dad assumes a much deeper meaning: was he imagining punching his dad? If so, was it a release or something that he unwillingly did? I'm partial to the opinion that Gale loved his dad, actually & that John doesn't like that Gale loved him but that's another discussion). To be honest, because fanfiction exists in an alternate universe where Every action has a Deeper meaning, the truth is that if we were to strip them of their Blorbo status, they were fighting because they were angry lol, which - hey - it's still a fun thing to explore.
To me - because I see their relationship as so intrinsically romantic - their fight was both the culmination/the highest part of their love (I love you and because I do I'm willing to hurt you) & the bursting of their friendship (why are you making me do this while we're both hurting & in the same position?), so of course everything that comes after cannot exist without this kind of Pain, & obviously this rings true to most things (in order for the release to feel satisfying something needs to be held back before it happens); I make no universal claims, mind you, this is my preference! The stalag fight & the captivity is what makes me believe they were in love, but that is when they realized. Gale was obviously worried about John, he'd been worried, and I also like when John's pain blinds him & he can't see that Gale is suffering, too, (because he holds Gale to a higher standard & this at one point will upset him), but I also like when he's willingly making him upset because he knew he was going to burst. I don't think it's Just a Case that after the fight Gale asks Alex to help them formulate a plan, lol...
But, for a more direct answer: Gale is just the perfect character to 'torture' because I feel like his unwillingness to show makes him best suited to be the primary subject for the literary pursuit of explaining Pain.
Part of it is also definitely catharsis. He's an object & much like a stressball or a punching bag he can't hurt us back!
Sorry I don't think you were expecting such a long answer lol but The Clarifier etc.
CIRCLING BACK to the ruptured liver Absolutely yes, when their mutualism makes it so that everything is a Shared experience, like those twins that feel each other's touches... and it's never for Pleasure!!!
MOTA Hope weekend 2026: Instructions
Welcome to MOTA Hope weekend: July 24-26 2026
This is for all MOTA creators and all characters, themes and ships! All forms of creative work are welcome - writing, physical or digital art, edits, collages, music etc.Β
Be creative! Nothing is too hopeful or fluffy!
How do I participate?
The Hope weekend will consist of three days (friday-sunday), all of which have their own hope-set (much similar to the whump-sets during the MOTA whumpfest). These sets will contain different kinds of prompts and creative inspiration that you can use when creating your own fanwork.Β
You decide yourself how you want to interpret and draw inspiration from each dayβs set. You can base your work on one part of each set or all of it, whatever you prefer.Β
The hope-sets will be posted soon! You can find them here.
To participate, you post your fanworks during the weekend the event happens. Add the #MOTA HOPE 2026 tag, and tag @mota-collab in the post so that we see it and can reblog it.
Alternative prompts?
If none of the hope-sets resonate with you but you still feel inspired and want to participate, feel free to participate with fanwork independent from the hope-sets. You can create something of your own personal choosing, inspired by the theme hope.Β
If you want more ideas, check out this masterpost!
Recommending works
You can also recommend favourite fan works that correspond with the theme. Send us an ask via the Mota Collab page, and tell us:
The title of the fan work and what medium it is (fic, art, edit, etc.)
The link to the fan work and to the artist
What you like about it
Why you think it fits the theme hope
If you don't want to send it to us, you can post recs on your own blog of course, again using the #MOTA HOPE 2026Β tag, and tag @mota-collab in the post so we can see it! (Donβt forget to tag the artist so they can see your recommendation!)
Where can I see the created fanworks/recs?
Follow the #MOTA HOPE 2026 tag! Weβll do a masterpost at the end of the event and there will be an AO3 collection for any fics posted or recommended on that platform.Β
What about AI?
Note that no AI, of any kind, is allowed at this event.Β This weekend aspires to focus on real people, human made art, and how we can make the world a better place through our creative expressions and outlets together.

"Gale, I don't think I could ever hate you for anything at all." "Thank you, John." It was never going to be a tragedy
to the point of invention, ch.31
John tries to stay calm, to see the Oscars just as a fun night out with the rest of the cast, nothing to worry about, nothing serious. But his fans still campaigning for him, the betting sites' predictions, and most importantly Gale's unwavering support have planted in him the traitorous seed of hope. And with hope comes a gnawing feeling in his gut, exciting and tiring at the same time, and the worst case of nerves he's ever suffered from.
