So I have always been a huge advocate of the idea that you have to be super careful about the stimuli you choose to take in. Everything you give attention to, whether it’s social media, music, TV shows, friendships etc deeply influences your mental health, your perception of reality, your happiness, your self esteem, and the state of your relationships.

I naturally just stopped listening to female rap artists like Meg the Stallion, Cardi, Nicki Minaj, Saweetie etc (I know there are many many more in the same vein with the same sort of vibe, I just listened to these the most) when other factors in my life were improving in a more wholesome way. But I also actively put in effort not to let myself listen to this sort of music anymore because of the seriously negative influence it was having on my mental. And I only realised how deep and insidious that influence was long after I stopped listening.

Firstly, the lyrics in this genre of music heavily encourage narcissism and an overly inflated sense of ego. It encourages you to aspire to be, and to see yourself primarily as ‘bad’, ‘fuckable’, ‘cold’, and overtly sexy, as well as having your primary point of value be your degree of sexual appeal to men. Literally, these songs are usually fundamentally about how great they are because of how many men want to sleep with them. Since when did that become the pinnacle of achievement in life as a woman? Especially since we all know how men aren’t exactly the most discerning creatures in the world when it comes to who they would sleep with.

Secondly, the level of aggression and encouragement of conflict within the lyrics and themes HEAVILY normalises and pushes this idea of competing with other women (for no good reason), destroying and walking all over other women to get a man (or a ‘bag’), and basically just having toxic inauthentic relationships with other women based on shallow petty crap. Listening to this sort of music a lot will really warp the way you view other women in a social context and push you to see them as enemies or competition or just worse people than they truly are. The worst part about this culture is that for the most part, this toxicity and erosion of female bonding is for the purposes of being the one to secure a man’s attention more than any other woman in the social context does. If we bring this toxic off putting aura & energy into the workplace, University, friendship groups etc, we can kiss goodbye to any chance of having genuine enriching female friendships.

This music just encourages you to see the world in a negative, harsh, toxic light where everything is a competition, and every situation can and should be escalated into conflict to boost your ego and prove you’re the ‘baddest’. It encourages you to oversexualise yourself both on social media and in real life for attention and validation of your worth, which just looks super desperate and cringey in reality. It teaches you that more is more, and that niceness and healthy human relationships are underrated; drama, flexing and shallow attention is superior.

I think these women are all immensely talented which makes this all the more disappointing; they could use their talent to create music about matters more meaningful and authentic and unique, and still be super successful. But sadly this music is designed by producers to be deployed to a mass market and have mass appeal for a huge audience - and sadly, negativity and sexual explicitness sells.
