As someone who collects a LOT of physical media but doesnโt make a lot of money, I want to share the rule that keeps my wallet from crying out in despair every time I enter a store. I donโt remember who I got this from, but thank you whoever you are because it has been a game-changer when it comes to building a large collection without breaking the bank.
The $1 per hour rule. Itโs exactly what it says on the tin. If Iโm purchasing physical media, I consider it good value if I can expect to get at least one hour of enjoyment for every dollar I spend on it.
I donโt remember what I spent on BG3, but I know it was a good deal because Iโve logged 600 hours in it. Hades II costs $30, and I was more than happy to pay that because I know Iโll play it for at least 30 hours. When I add books to my library, I almost exclusively buy used books that cost under $5 because 5 hours is a good average estimate for how long it takes me to finish a novel.
Will there be a treat you splurge on every now and then? Of course, but $1 per hour is a good standard to stick to if you want to responsibly build a dragon's hoard of physical media.
This is a way better way of expressing it than I've seen before. It's mathy, it's clear, it's easy to remember.
Anyway we took way longer to say something similar in this one: Ask the Bitches: How Can I Absolve Myself of Financial Guilt Over My Pricey PS4?ย
Do you have any advice for someone else who is in the very beginning stages of the "life is a precious gift rapidly escaping me, I have to change to become someone better and be happy before I've wasted all of it" transition? I'm tired of losing so much life and joy to grief and trauma and I also want to start creating and seeing and enjoying as much as I can for my tiny time as a carbon based lifeform but it's overwhelming to say the least
Actively seek out things that inspire wonder
Look for the good parts. There are good parts. There are interesting parts. There will always be good and interesting parts.
Treat yourself kindly. This one is difficult.
Do things out of ridiculous whimsy.
Practice cog itive behavioural exercises to self-examine and address beliefs and behaviors that are causing suffering.
Don't argue when people compliment you.
Don't rush yourself, and don't assume it'll be like this forever when you have a backslide. These things happen. Over time, they happen less.
Be honest with the people you love and trust.
Tell people how much they mean to you and what you like about them.
Help others and find satisfaction in being the stranger that did something good
Consider speaking to a medical professional, my antidepressants and anti-anxiety medical took some time to figure out but life is WAY better.
Have a silly little craft or hobby.
Let yourself be bored sometimes. Stand outside in the rain and let yourself get wet. Go on a walk. Put your phone in a different room and wander off. Meet up with a friend and go on a long walk together to nowhere in particular
Start doing things because you want to and it feels good, not just because you think it's something you should say yes to.
Say yes to things.
Take a random day of the week and go into a store or a business you've never been in before.
Compliment strangers when something about them is striking.
Read books and watch movies that make you feel the exact right amount of ecstatic and embarrassed, and make all the silly noises about it.
Collect scraps of fabric and little trinkets and all the little textures and colours you love and stash them in a shoebox or something like a tiny dragon's hoard.
Start a collection of something small and inexpensive. Like corks.
Make food with ingredients you've never used before
Make long lists of all your favorite things- flowers, bugs, songs, foods, places
Start a trash-book to fill with scraps of neat wrappers and bits of paper and colored fabric from old ruined clothes
Imagine yourself as a alien from a dead and barren world who has just arrived on this planet for the very first time and imagine how excited you would be by every little thing
Cannot recommend enough that you befriend a creature
listen to me, this is so so important: you've gotta get used to really giving it your 60% as a default. like don't half-ass it necessarily but try not to go over 70% or so of an ass. you'll feel better and live a happier more fulfilled life, and on the rare occasions where you do need to lock the fuck in you'll be able to pull off bullshit that the sad miserable wretches giving it their 100% can never dream off, because they're busy draining themselves dry and you have energy reserves to spare.
This is actually what I was adviced to do at the work rehabilitation program I went to. Hasn't left my mind since. 10/10 solid advice
anyway i looked up the post about seeing your grandma's boobs and tumblr has deleted the screenshot of the story where the finnish dude says that americans are "like that" because they haven't seen their grandma's tits
good job tumblr ๐
there it is!
my comments on that post were (sorry for shamelessly copy-pasting them):
american attitudes about nudity are fucking wild, and the worst part is that because they're american, they just assume that everyone everywhere thinks the same. i will never forget seeing people on a left-leaning, progressive site saying that families bathing together is creepy and gross and clearly a sign that something is wrong with the family, that they'd never seen their siblings or parents naked and would in fact rather die. meanwhile to this day i bathe and go to the sauna with my sister and mother and have been bathing and sauna'ing with various family members - and even strangers! - my whole life. but yes, can confirm, seeing your grandma's tits as a child does you good, and not just because it teaches you that "beauty is fake and temporary", but because it broadens your ideas about what beauty even is in the first place. my sister and i used to spend our summers at our grandma's house by the countryside and frequently bathed and went to sauna with her. we saw not just her breasts but also her flabby skin, her moles and liver spots, her body hair and varicose veins, and we didn't see any of that as weird or ugly because they were a part of our grandma who we loved very much. and when we see those things in other people - ourselves included! - we think "well it wasn't ugly on my grandma's body, so why would it be ugly on anyone else's body?". it makes you much more understanding and "forgiving", if you will, towards the completely normal bodies of strangers as well as your own body.

I just saw a YouTube short that reminded me that sometimes common knowledge isn't common for everyone, SO here's the reason WHY you should not have a traditional mattress rawdogging the floor without a bedframe:
Hint โ it's NOT because it makes your bedroom look like a frat boy's first apartment who spent all his money on a giant TV (also on the floor) and a ps5 and one sad mattress on the floor. (Although this is also a good reason, to avoid being that guy, it is not the actually important reason.)
The reason is this:
You will get mold or mildew under your mattress if the mattress doesn't have air circulation happening underneath it. Air circulation is possible when the mattress is lifted up off of the floor with a bed frame, or if you have a floor mattress, when you regularly roll the mattress back up off the floor.
Do not just dump a mattress on the floor and leave it there.
You are a warm sweaty body lying on a mattress at night and all the sweat, moisture, and oils will get trapped between the mattress and your floor if there's no circulation. If you have a floor/tatami style mattress, you actually have to be frequently rolling that back up and moving it for the same reason.
Traditional floor mattresses get put away (taken off the floor) after sleeping, which brings in the necessary air circulation!
don't give yourself a moldy or mildewy mattress โ those things are expensive.
The cheapest options are:
buy the cheapest frame you can find when you buy a mattress
or buy the super basic frame that comes with the mattress as a bundle offer
find a used mattress frame somewhere for free or cheap. Facebook marketplace, buy nothing, used furniture stores, estate sales, moving giveaways, whatever.
DIY a mattress frame if you have the time, energy, knowledge, and can find supplie
Buy a floor mattress you are committed to regularly rolling or folding up to provide air circulation
There is no "just put the mattress on the floor" option unless you want your bed to also function as a petri dish.
best piece of life advice when you want to change a bad habit: you cant remove something without replacing it. otherwise, you'll leave a hole that needs filled.
you want to distance yourself from that friend and interact less frequently? get closer with other friends, and talk with them more.
you want to drink less gatorade/soda? start drinking more water or tea.
you want to play less video games? play more card or board games.
you want to eat less junk food? cook more home meals or go to better restaurants where you can.
energy cant be created or destroyed, and that applies to your habits too.
This is one of the many reasons why authoritarian parenting doesnโt work.
The father here is clearly not authoritarian. He acknowledges that children deserve explanations for why their actions are wrong. He acknowledges that it's wrong to use your size against someone. And I'm going to guess that he leads by example. He was able to enforce a rule by explaining the reason for it instead of by demanding subservience to him.
But for authoritarian parents, they regularly use their size and their authority against their children. It's impossible to teach your child that it's wrong to do something when it's exactly how you treat them.
Additionally, this needs to be a conversation. LISTEN TO YOUR CHILDREN. EVERY TIME. They have questions, rebuttals they think are legitimate. Think about those responses. Just because youโre an adult doesnโt mean youโre right. There are many interpretations regarding situations. Think over their legitimacy before dismissing them. Owning up to not being the only intelligent person in the room demonstrates to your kids how to deal with being wrong, having reacted inappropriately, a whole myriad of behaviors that must be experienced. This builds confidence and strength in oneโs character - yours as well as theirs.
late night reminder to self: your depressive episode will not last forever. it will have an end. tonight will not be the end of you.
Hey guess what i saw this a few days ago when i was in an absolutely scary slump and then i spoke to my counsellors and did what they told me to do and now i feel so much better. So this is true. Reblogging for more good luck
why is this so beautiful in like a space way
Because the essence of humanity and life as a whole is a constellation of connections with one another. We are all here in this cosmos together, from the tiniest creatures to the distant stars.
You're not alone.
you got lots of company, and you're gonna be okay ๐ซ

This is literally how you actually improve ADHD symptoms btw
the ability to see more beauty in the world is a skill. the more beauty you see, the more comes to you, the more you create yourself. so much of the disempowerment people feel is because they are trained to see the ugly and negative in everything. you have to unpick your mind from the lure of negativity and train yourself to find beauty. if you want a beautiful life, it starts with learning to find the beauty everywhere.
