aurelia actually has the good grace to look (and feel) startled. she has never much cared for the impact of her words and actions upon others and in fact, has always assumed that her actions and words are always off-putting to others. it is a fact of nature, just as natural as the sky is blue and the grass is green. her aloof iciness is the only legacy of her mother's that feels natural to her. others may recoil or turn on their heel to place distance between themselves and her but so what? its never bothered her.

and yet...here is this infuriating son of poseidon saying that he actually doesn't mind her frigid mannerisms. that in of itself could be enough to surprise her but, always so seemingly bent on confounding her, he goes a step further and claims that he actually seems to like the lack of reverence she speaks with. it's never mattered to her what others think of her nature so she should feel indifferent at this confession and yet she feels...something. a confused (giddy) flutter in the stomach. a frisson of exhilaration down her spine. it shouldn't matter. it really shouldn't matter.

it matters.

❝ i just treat you normally.❞ it's not like she's ever given him special treatment. no. yes, she's somehow permitted him to weasel his way into his life but still she doggedly refuses to concede that there are moments that she lingers longer in conversations than she would otherwise, that her lips sometimes almost curl into a smile. ❝ you may find the candor a breath of fresh air now but i've been told it tends to wear thin after awhile.❞ her own family, her own flesh and blood, even find her demeanor mystifying, her cold detachment unnerving and agitating. the only one who could ever empathize is the person from whom she inherited such qualities.

and  then  she  spoke  to  him,  and  suddenly,  he  felt  like  he  needed  to  clear  things  up.  he  needed  her  to  see  him  for  him,  because  there  was  something  about  her.  magnetic,  with  a  pull  that,  try  as  they  might,  he  couldn’t  get  away  from.  he  knew  she  hated  it.  knew  it  irked  her,  and  that  HE  irked  her.

but  she  doesn’t  irk  him.  she  makes  him  laugh.  keeps  him  on  his  toes.  provides  banter  in  areas  most  people  would  choose  to  disembark.  SHE  IS  A  THRILL  he  wants  to  keep  experiencing.  

“i  like  your  version  of  normal,  then,”  he  retorts,  head  shaking  as  she  keeps  talking.  he  interjects  at  points,  (an  unhelpful  ‘i’m  not  LIKE  most  people’  here,  a  “i  don’t  want  you  to  change,”  there),  until  she  finishes,  words  all  tied  up  under  a  neatly  wrapped  insult  shaped  bow.  

𝐇𝐎𝐖  𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐘  𝐆𝐎𝐃𝐒  𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄  𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐌?  if  jackson  is  right,  then  they’ve  got  MAYBE  four divine  helpers  on  a  good  day.  the  two  from  the  son  of  the  sea,  and  PROBABLY  ares (if verso can swing it, having heard of the two's history before)  and  hephaestus.  thanatos  certainly  isn’t  going  to  be  showing  up  to  give  either  of  them  flowers  with  how  often  they’ve  both  escaped  death  (he’s  trying  not  to  be  envious  of  the  sheer  volume  of  percy  jackson’s  near-death  experiences,  most  of  which  he’s  only  heard  about  from  rumors,  but  MAN  is  it  hard).  

verso  is  better  than  percy,  in  regards  to  offerings.  YES,  they  should  come  before  the  meal  has  even  touched  his  lips.  YES,  he  should,  ideally,  pray  to  his  father.  but  percy  HATES  the  few  rituals  that  the  grecians  stick  to,  and  HAVE  stuck  to,  for  years.  he  wants  to  grumble  at  the  idea  of  offering  anything  to  any  of  those  who  reign  olympus,  but  he  thinks  better  of  it,  and  at  least  deigns  self  to  save  a  slice  for  aphrodite.  hopefully,  she  likes  meat.  

“that  is  SO  not  a  saying,”  percy  grumbles,  his  face  evident  with  his  displeasure  at  almost  every  line  that  verso  throws  his  way.  he’s  glad,  silently,  that  they’re  not  forced  to  be  around  each  other  as  often  as  he  sees,  say,  thalia,  or  nico.

sometimes,  he  just  wants  to  give  that  man  a  good  noogie  and  tell  him  to  shut  up!  

“you  literally  just  open  your  mouth  and  hope  that  whatever  comes  out  doesn’t  get  your  ass  kicked,  don’t  you?”  and  coming  from  PERCY  HIMSELF?  that’s  saying  a  lot.  

Jason thinks of the progress he's made on constructing altars across the camps and wonders, a little deliriously, what would happen to him if he decided to insult a member of the pantheon. Would Kim drown him immediately ? Or would she be delighted at his rebellion ? It's a question that Jason is absolutely fine not answering — and while it'd be easy to chalk all of this up to worry and training, there's a little wistfulness that sneaks in through the cracks.

Percy is simply larger than life. He's — Percy. Self possessed, intuitive, brave. No wonder people follow along behind him; maybe his parentage helps a little, but it's not the same. It's not some forced show of respect or schmoozing to get a favor. It's not Poseidon — it's Percy.

❝ No, ❞ he replies congenially, ❝ I figured you wouldn't. ❞ He huffs a sound that's caught somewhere between exasperation and humor. ❝ You know that the worst a god can do is more than stable duty. Not that that's the most fun thing, but like. Y'know. ❞

Jason leans back when Percy stands, ready to leave himself — but absolutely not to follow him. Instead he gives a theatrical bow and flourish as if to encourage Percy to go through with his ridiculous idea.

something  about  jason  was  like  a  magnet,  that  made  you  want  to  not  only  KNOW  him,  but  be  one  of  the  lucky  few  who  get  to  say  they  can  call  themself  his  friend.  percy  counts  himself  lucky,  not  that  he’d  ever  say  that  aloud  to  jason.  he’s  sure  the  other  would  brush  it  off  in  some  way  that  only  he  could  get  away  with.  or  something  like  that!  

“not  much  a  god  can  do  to  one  of  the  few  who’s  saved  his  ass  MULTIPLE  TIMES  OVER,”  he  amends,  at  jason’s  hesitation,  “how’s  that  sound?  better?”  and  really,  he’s  still  pushing  his  luck,  but  with  the  smile  that  forms  on  his  face  as  he  stares  at  jason,  feigning  innocence,  can  you  blame  that  face?

" sorry! i ---- there usually aren't people in the water, " sylvain stammers, a little wide - eyed, and no longer just because of the shock.

he'd heard the name percy before in association with water, so seeing him there, standing in the surf, is like seeing a creature from a story leap to life before him. and this, sylvain has experienced plenty. he's hoping this mythical figure is a little nicer than nanook had been. gathering himself, he finds his feet, wincing a touch as his ankle complains beneath him.

once, this would've been a real problem : he couldn't easily walk a trapline, or chop wood, or do one of the other million chores around his home, on a sprained ankle. it takes him a moment of blank dread to remember that it isn't a problem. he isn't even alone ---- he doesn't think he'd even have to walk back to camp alone, if he didn't want to. being around people makes him warm and nervous, makes his english hard to find. " i was only, um . . . not scared. jumping? jumpy? "

“you  may  wanna  prop  that  up  higher  on  the  rock.  the  high  it  is,  the  less  it’ll  swell,  and  it’ll  heal  faster.  uh,”  a  hand  lifts  up,  scratching  at  his  head,  all  the  while  he  begins  chewing  at  his  bottom  lip,  “yeah,”  he  adds  on,  lamely,  “sorry.  again.”

at  the  question,  percy  at  least  has  the  decency  to  answer  honestly,  though,  he  knows  what  it  sounds  like.  “i  was  under  here  for  a  while,”  he  admits,  almost  boyish  in  his  honesty.  “the,  uh,  the  little  guys  who  live  in  the  water  wanted  to  play  a  game,  so..”  he  shrugs,  as  if  to  say,  ‘WHAT  CAN  YA  DO?’.  he  knows,  he  knows!  he  sounds  crazy,  but  he  can’t  help  it.  

But Nico should have--what, apologized?--in all the time he had to give Percy an apology in the weeks since the son of Poseidon had woken up again in Camp Jupiter? As much time as Percy seems to think Nico might have had, Nico knows most of the time Percy was with the Romans, he was in the sights of the gods, and there are precious few things that gods hate more than having their playthings messed with. Especially by a son of Hades.

Still Nico's shoulders bunch guiltily for a breath before dark eyes look up into the other demigod's sea-green gaze. "You don't anything about me, Percy. About what I felt--" But that is still getting too close to things he wasn't sure about what he felt either. "--Not all of us survive defying the gods, and I wasn't just going to leave Hazel behind."

and  he  does,  truly,  think  nico  is  selfish,  here.  for  ASSUMING  that  he  meant  nico  needed  to  visit  her.  to  PLACATE  HIS  OWN  MOTHER.  he  understands  that  nico  is  young.  he  GETS  that.  but  NOT  young  enough  to  understand  that  he  can’t  play  god  at  his  young  age.  

“i  don’t  need  to  know  about  you,  nico. you  act  like  we  haven’t  KNOWN  each other  for  years,  now!  like  we  didn’t  celebrate  my  birthday  together!  like  i  haven’t  tried,  for  YEARS,  to  connect  with  you,  and  make  you  see  that  i  care  about  you.  you’re  the  one  who  pushes  me  away,  and  you  know  what?  fine.  fine!  and  i  wasn’t  ASKING  you  to  leave  hazel  behind.  but  if  you  think  that  i  just,  just  —  JUST  SHOULDN’T  BE  ANGRY  ABOUT  THIS?!  you’re  CRAZY!”  

silence seems the safest refuge even though aurelia is half-tempted to make an excuse and then make herself scarce. her gaze takes sudden interest in the slender silver rings that adorn her fingers and her lips are curving dangerously downwards into the phantom of a scowl. why was this conversation even happening in the first place? couldn't he just be like everyone else and be content with the distance she chooses to place between herself and the rest of the world? doesn't he get it? ❝ what do you want me to say, percy? what exactly do you want from me?❞ the words are exhaled slowly through half-gritted teeth as she finally forces her gaze upwards and towards the son of poseidon.

❝ do you wanna hold hands and whisper our deepest darkest secrets? exchange friendship bracelets?❞ whatever it is he wants from her, she'll inevitably fall short even if she tries to make an effort. she has never been particularly adept at connections, whether they be platonic, romantic or even familial. ❝ enlighten me.❞ the sarcasm is meant to goad, to steer this conversation towards an irretrievable end. with any luck, she can antagonize him into yelling again, which will create the perfect opportunity to storm off in a huff.

percy jackson confounds her. he defies her understanding time and time again and it unnerves her. she has always prided herself on her powers of perception, on her knack for anticipating next moves but rarely does she ever successfully guess his reactions.

❝ you have almost the entire demigod world, honestly even some of the olympians, eating out of your hand. i don't think you're lacking for people to hang out with. ❞ why her? and why is she even humoring him with having this conversation? if it was literally anyone else trying to draw forth an emotional reaction, she'd scoff and stalk off without so much as a second glance over her shoulder.

but  he  and  annabeth  no  longer  worked  in  the  way  they  had  once,  and  what  he  wants  from  her,  he  knows,  is  different  than  the  way  THIS  feels.  once  the  thought  passes  through  his  head,  he  feels  like  he’s  been  stricken  in  the  face  by  a  sharp  blow,  physically  reeling  back  and  recoiling  at  the  thought.

that  was  NOT  a  thought  he  could  discern,  right  here,  right  now.  if  anything,  he  needed  to  focus  on  other  ones,  such  as  the  way  her  mouth  curls  down,  and  the  crease  between  her  brows  forms,  and  the  way  his  thumb  wants  to  —  YEAH,  NOT  THAT  THOUGHT,  EITHER.
