I find it cute how aside from Julian and Portia, they’d all likely celebrate different things. It’s a great opportunity to draw for the different late year holidays.
The headcanons I based these off are that in a modern AU, Portia and Julian are Jewish, Asra is Muslim, Muriel is athiest, Nadia is Hindu, and Lucio is Christian (at least to celebrate Christmas)

[I don’t get why people want a Valdemar route. Like it would probably end two chapters in with the MC dismembered on their lil autopsy table. And Valdemar isn’t even hot?? I don’t even get how people could think that. They’re horrifying. They’re unnaturally tall and thin with their little devil horns and red eyes and that creepy serial killer smile with the pointy teeth like I dOnT gEt iT???]

Anyone who has ever had to deal with an institutional review board understands Valdemar’s single-minded dedication to science, ethics be damned. And I think that’s beautiful.
Reblogging for that comment tbh. But I have more to add to this. Here’s the thing. You can say about Valdemar whatever you want, but at the bottom line of it, whether you like it or not, they make a very valid point. It’s essentially “will you pull the lever?”. Imagine being a doctor for a moment. Thousands of people are dying of a mysterious sickness, and it’s taking ages for a cure to be developed. It’s taking too long. This illness is claiming too many lives. You’re going to have to make a choice. What if one of those bodies, people who are already dying with no way to save them, holds the answers you need to find a cure? At this point it’s about choosing the lesser of two evils. Are you going to set your morals aside to potentially save the thousands of lives that are on the line? Don’t forget that Julian was in this too. Yes, he’s scared of Valdemar, and with good reason. But he was there when it happened. In other words, he must have at least on some level agreed with Valdemar’s approach to it. It goes without saying that Valdemar isn’t a “good” person. They are obsessed with science. With the illness instead of the patient. Obsessed with pursuing knowledge at any cost. They show no signs of honest empathy and literally state to wish to break a mortality record with the second plague. But, are they truly a “bad” person? As much as Julian and everyone else, they were also looking for a cure. “Against those thousands, what’s a few more bleeding out a little early, in pursuit of a cure? ‘Necessary sacrifices’, hm? Ends always justifying the means.” - Valdemar in chapter XI: Justice, Julian’s route The way they say this very clearly shows that some thought went into this. “Ends always justifying means”. A good outcome excuses any wrong committed to attain it. Of course Valdemar has ulterior motives. They obviously enjoy their work a little too much. Not the interpersonal part of it, either. They don’t seem to care much about their patients. But I truly think that this was mostly a situation of “being in the right place at the right time” for them, and they deciding to take the opportunity. Sort of a two birds with one stone thing: they got to look for a cure, do their job, and at the same time, sate their endless, morbid curiosity. Of course Valdemar isn’t my character so I don’t know what they are like in the mind of the devs, but in my eyes, Valdemar isn’t the mindless kind of puppy kicking evil some people are making them out to be. They are menacing and detached, yes. They are creepy, cruel, sadistic. They even seem to be capable of being actively murderous when the opportunity arises. But for some reason, to me, they don’t come off as purely malicious. Chaotic neutral, if I had to label it. They seem to be highly individualistic (failing to show up to court meetings multiple times) and mainly focussed on their own pursuits - yet, they showed up to testify for Julian when they were asked to, telling only the truth and not in any way specifically trying to get him sentenced to death, even if they very well knew that was the only way for them to get their hands on his body for research - which was obviously what they ultimately wished for. Valdemar isn’t intentionally trying to disrupt anything (they actually OFFER the apprentice to take them down to the dungeons and show them around and answer their questions) and even seems disinterested in whatever evil little plan the rest of the court has. That’s not their business. Medicine/science is their business, and it thrives in times of illness. If anything, Valdemar feels neutral to me. The only thing that makes them chaotic is the fact they seem to disregard ethics and other people’s feelings, and that they are mainly motivated to act according to their own desires and interests. In some way, it even seems as if they do find benevolent actions somewhat emotionally rewarding. The right thing the wrong way, so to say. Valdemar isn’t evil. They just have a very crooked moral compass and, as Nadia describes them, “think the whole world is their playground”.
I may add that Valdemar is simply... intriguing. In my mind, I always imagined them with this weirdly alluring aura of unwavering self-esteem and cold composure, likely with slightly soothing voice. That's why I really loved the part of Julian's route when Valdemar took MC to the catacombs. Because Valdemar is creepy and scary, but at the same time they sometimes can seem more human than other courtiers. They speak with fascination. They are eager to have a conversation. Surely, for the science they would slit your throat without the slightest hesitation, but they won't do it on sight. They are not like Vulgora. Vulgora craves war just for war, bloodshed and chaos. They want to simply hit you in the face, because meaningless violence is enough to satisfy them. But Valdemar? They might even consider human body as a piece of art. An object to investigate. But they do not hate humans. They think they are above them, they rightfully (as a demon existing for centuries) see them as small and weak, but they don't hate them. I'd go even further - I believe Valdemar might even think they are above such primitive feelings like hatred. They're driven by wicked, extreme fascination and they'll kill for it, but never for the pure satisfaction and just because they can. Obviously, they were created to be a villain, but they never were evil just to be evil. Surely, wishing for the plague to return was purely selfish and evil as hell (heh), but it's much more complex than in the case of other courtiers. I definitely wouldn't call them "neutral", but calling them just evil is a serious understatement. And that's what makes them amazing.
And I am saying this as a hopeless Valerius lover.

Okay, so I don’t usually do this sort of thing on Tumblr, but I’ve noticed a pattern of disrespect in The Arcana fandom that I feel needs to addressed yet again.
Going out of your way to misgender and disrespect someone’s identity does not make you enlightened compared to the masses, or cool, or edgy—it makes you an asshole. Whether they’re a real person or a fictional character doesn’t matter. It costs zero dollars to be polite and respectful, and if you can’t manage that, it takes less energy to keep your thoughts to yourself than to type them out and share them with the world.
I know this is harsh, but it needs to be said. Non-binary, trans, and agender people are part of the LGBT+ community and if you can’t respect them, then why are you playing The Arcana? Most, if not all, of the characters fall somewhere under the LGBT+ umbrella! You don’t get to pick and choose which identities you support and which ones you don’t in this community—you either treat everyone with kindness and decency, or you get the hell out.

I’ve been playing the Arcana Game about 3 years now and always enjoyed it. It’s an amazing game with wonderful characters. The character who made me download and install this game back then was Dr. Julian Devorak. He’s just wonderful. He’s not only the self-sacrificing Doctor who enjoys pain. He’s attentive, quick-witted, intelligent and an amazing rascal. My absolute favourite scene with him is the one where mc pats him down for anything he might have stolen when he broke in the shop, and this was also one of the first scenes I unlocked in the game. And which you sadly completely deleted out of the prologue with this new update. I can’t describe how disappointed I was when I realised it.
You already changed the prologue once, but back then I understood it. At first it was a bit too long, yes. Yet I was sad when you dropped the part where mc had to remember Portia’s code to get past the guards. But well, I got used to it.
And now you made even more changes at the prologue. Ever since I read it yesterday, it bothered me how much this story changed, and this drives me now to write this letter to you.
These were not only a few minor changes to improve the story. This totally changes the story/stories as a whole. And to me, many of them don’t even make sense.
The Countess suddenly thinks something is wrong with the murder of the late Count from the start? Why so suddenly? What made her doubt everything her courtiers tell her?
Julian Devorak writes a letter to mc and tells them he can’t remember if he killed the Count. This basically leads Julian’s whole story into absurdity. Because why would he later, in his route, be convinced he killed him if he doubted it at first?
Mc having nightmares … this is a good idea. But it felt to me that it already gives too much information that hints to Count Lucio in advance.
A little bit more of Muriel was nice, although I wonder if he would really open up to mc so fast, especially since he’s negative towards them at the beginning of his route.
Mc goes to the fountain while sleepwalking to speak to Asra? Making them rush in an instant down in the garden and they are not even remembering it? Sorry, but even in a fantasy story this is not believable to me.
The cute meeting with the dogs is cancelled and replaced by a portrait, a magical statue of a goat in the castle that makes the mc suddenly appear on the balcony, the scene with Portia where they are jumping out of the window is gone (I’m crying …), it is already revealed that there are lots of secret passages leading through the whole castle …
It’s sad to say, but the whole prologue feels so rushed that it is no fun anymore to read it.
I must confess I don’t recognise the story anymore after all these radical changes. What I can do is to completely ignore the prologue or to delete the game from my phone.
I also wonder now if you intend to change the finished routes to fit to the new prologue what would make it for me even worse. I love the Arcana Game, and I love the routes of Asra, Julian and Nadia as they are now.
I’m sure there are many fans of The Arcana Game who think like I do. Some will have a bit different opinions, some would like to keep things of the new update, but all in all I read yesterday that many people are upset, especially because some amazing scenes were completely cut out.
Yes, the pictures in the updates are beautiful, and I love them. But truly, I would rather do without them if this could bring the previous version of the prologue back.
You once asked us to help to save the Portia route, and the fans did everything to help. Now you are driving them away with a new update to a prologue that was already perfect for the story.
I’m just .. disappointed.

I’m all for stupid Julian. This man has no sense of self preservation. But let’s not forget he is also extremely intelligent.
He’s a doctor that has studied abroad and learned many different techniques.
He speaks at least 7 different languages.
He can play the vielle which is the medieval version of a violin.
He can most likely captain and sail ships since he has an extensive pirate background.
Has an amazing memory. We learn in Asra’s route early on as he’s trying to find a cure and creating potions he seems to be rolling off the top of his head ingredients and possible reactions before even making them.
Secret stealth master. He spent years as a fugative in the SAME city he’s wanted in using his wit, knowledge of the city that he’s not even from, and connection to the people to evade capture for YEARS.
So let’s all have a laugh poking fun at this bad decision man. But don’t forget for the time this game is based in Julian is fucking smart as hell!

FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT!!! There’s a huge difference between having intelligence and having wisdom. Julian has intelligence, but hasn’t developed his wisdom. Common sense is part of being wise, and Julian lacks in that. I hate how people confuse both… So yes, you can be a smart dumbass because you can be hella intelligent, but lacking strongly on the wisdom department…
He’s got all the smarts, he just doesn’t know how to apply them
Julian canonically falls into the category of “dumbass and won’t admit it,” but also “absolutely fucking jacked and also a scoundrel”
