and add to that the show’s terrible treatment of POC…

I have been excited by the footage and photos I’ve seen so from the upcoming movie Wonder Woman. Of course, I have did worry that the film’s setting in early 20th century England might be an issue for having a diverse cast. But I didn’t think about that impacting the Amazons. I mean the Amazons have been shown as diverse for years. And then today we got this image showing us the “women who raised and trained Diana”.

This is Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman based by Connie Nielsen as her mother, Robin Wright as her aunt Antiope (Robin Wright) and her other aunt Menalippe (Lisa Loven Kongsli).

Of course readers of Wonder Woman know that all Amazon’s are Wonder Woman “aunts” or more specifically her mother. Or and the one who trains her is this fierce character:

Phillipus. Amazon. General. Wonder Woman’s trainer. And due to the relationship between Phillipus and Wonder Woman’s mother, her step-mother.

It is extremely disappointed to see the first look we get of the Amazon’s be lacking in diversity.

Given that it is not this way in the comics, why would it be this way in the movie?

Director Patty Jenkins responded to the concerns with this.

So in other words Diana now has a “direct family” and that family is white. Oh I get it. Thanks.

Sorry nope. The Amazons are imaginary. They are not “real” and the only reason this is Wonder Woman’s direct family is to justify three white actresses training Wonder Woman when we know this is not so in the comic. I am sure there are probably diverse characters on Themyscira but the won’t be the lead characters training Diana. If they were they wouldn’t be three white actresses standing behind Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman should be all about diversity and Intersectionality and this is a disappointing reveal about her movie.
