𝙝𝙚  𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙙  𝙩𝙤  𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚  𝙜𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜  𝙩𝙤  𝙩𝙝𝙚  𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙡  𝙡𝙞𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙧𝙮.   that was the safe place at school, where nobody would talk to him and teachers wouldn’t give him sideways looks in classes where he just sits in silence anyway.  the public library is a great place in the city, too  —  a place he can go after school if he needs, a place he and bolin can hunker down when things are really bad.  he’d love to see a library again, even if he’s pretty sure it’ll be torn apart, ransacked, and waterlogged from the elements by now.    “  𝗶  𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁  𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄,  ”    he answers, stooping down to pick up some nuts  —  any food is food to hold onto.    “  𝗮𝗹𝗹  𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀,  𝗶  𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘀.  𝗶’𝗺  𝗻𝗼𝘁  𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘆.  𝗶  𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻,  𝗶  𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁  𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲  𝗽𝗼𝗲𝘁𝗿𝘆,  𝗯𝘂𝘁  𝗶  𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝘁  𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗹𝗹  𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲  𝗽𝗼𝗲𝘁𝗿𝘆  𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁  𝗮𝗹𝗹  𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀.  ”    maybe bolin will, but not cass. 

     the      pushes      were      a      surprise.                     catra    stumbles    in    them,    falling    flat    on    her    ass    before    the    barrel    of    the    gun    is    pointed    toward    her.    she’s      wordless      for    a    moment,    and    then    a      laugh      bubbles    up    in    her    throat.    she’s      chuckling      at    first,    then    tears    sting    her    eyes    from    trying    to    hold    it    in.    soon    her    hands    rest    on    her    stomach    and    her    head    lays    on    the    ground,    the    laughter      too      much      to    contain.           ❛           damn,      flower.      nice      job.      i    didn’t    think    you    had    it    in    you.           ❜            eyes    raise    to    look    back    at    the    weapon    and    the    girl    holding    it,    and    catra    goes    as    far    as    to    prop    herself    on    her    elbows.           ❛           so    ?    are    you    going    to      shoot      me    ?      c’mon,      you    gotta    be    angry    enough    to.    so    why    not    ?    what’s    stopping    you    ?           ❜

her  hands  grip  the  rifle  tighter  as  catra  laughs,   eyes  widening.       florence  isn’t  one  to  curse,   but           what       the       fuck  ?    she  shakes  her  head,  not  wanting   the  girl   on  the  floor  get  in  her  head.   she  was  in  control  here.   she  had  the  gun.    she  had  the  power.   why  was  she  shaking  ?    she  could  feel  her  feet  digging  themselves  into  the  ground,   forcing  her  to  make  a  decision.     had  florence  ever  killed  ?    actually  killed  ?   no.   had  she  wanted  to  ?   everyday.     so  what  was  stopping  her  ?      her  eyes  narrowed  at  catra,   still  shaking.    

oh  florence,   don’t  fool  yourself.   

       “ HOW’RE YOU FEELING ? ”        she  enters  the  room  alone  after  having  gathered  a  small  tray  of  rations  from  perfuma.         glimmer  extends  the  food  like  an  olive  branch,   the  soft   (  yet  exhuausted  )    look  in  her  eyes  whispering  that  she’s  ready  to  behave.       civil  conversation  among  strangers  to  the  alliance  she  had  crafted  from  the  ground  up  isn’t  her  strong  suit.     “  extra  rough  one  out  there  today,   huh  ?       i  managed  to  wrench  all  this  away  from  my  crew  for  you.       i’m  guessing  you  haven’t  …   eaten  yet.  ”

 i  can  tell  she  doesn’t  like  me.   florence  is  her  name,  her  mother  told  me.   i  can  tell  by  the  way  she  looks  at  me  that  she  doesn’t  want  me  here,  that  she  must  think  foul  of  me.   it’s  hard  to  think  well  of  anyone  in  a  world  where  people  are  destroying  each  other  as  fast  as  the  common  enemy  is.   i  give  her  a  small  smile,  an  attempt  to  seem  harmless,  innocent,  nice.

 ❝   do  you  have  any  water?   ❞

during  this  time,   any  friend  living  is  considered  a  miracle.   so  many  are  dead,  others  lost  (  probably  dead.  they’re   probably  dead.  )   but   noi  finds  herself   back,   back  to  see  her   friend.    most   of   their  friends  are  dead.  but  hey  —  at  least  lucky  noi  made  it    out    alive.    she  looks  at   the  coffee,   nodding.   something  to  keep  her   warm.   but  this   situation  isn’t   ideal. “   sure.   i  wish  i  was   dead. ”  

𝙬𝙝𝙤’𝙨  𝙜𝙤𝙣𝙣𝙖  𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩  𝙩𝙤  𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬  𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩  𝙪𝙨,  𝙝𝙚  𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙨  𝙗𝙪𝙩  𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨𝙣’𝙩  𝙖𝙨𝙠.   his gaze doesn’t falter at the sight of the death.  sometimes, bolin still flinches.  sometimes, mako still catches him with misty eyes, especially if the bodies are too small.  but mako can’t remember the last time he felt enough to feel anything from the unknown dead.  he has to put those pieces of him away a long time ago.  now, he just casts cursory glances to see if they’ve got anything useful on their corpses.   “ 𝚢𝚎𝚊𝚑,  𝚒’𝚍  𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚍  𝚒𝚝. ”   i’ll read anything.   “ 𝚒  —  𝚠𝚎𝚕𝚕,  𝚒  𝚕𝚒𝚔𝚎  𝚋𝚘𝚘𝚔𝚜,  𝚒  𝚐𝚞𝚎𝚜𝚜. ”   back in their old group, mako gets made fun of for that, whenever they catch him reading or combing through scrap piles for books.  he tells cass the truth with a mixture of trepidation and prickly defense. 

she  nods,  barely  registering  what  he  says.    just  another  fun  fact.  despite  their  weeks  together,  she  still  wasn’t  ready  to  attach.   she  still  wasn’t  ready  to  remember  anything  about  him.   about  either  of  them.   no  matter  how  much  she  wants  to.   her  eyes  are  observing  still,   looking  above  them,   darting  behind  their  shoulders  just  in  case,   analyzing  every  corner  before  they  pass  it.   “   not  a  lot  of  those  around   anymore,  huh  ?    maybe  we  can  find  shelter  in  a  library  one  night  then.   ”     small  talk,  no  promises.             she  jots  a  note  in  her  head.  if  they  make  it  to  a  holiday,   she  has  to  get  him  books.
