“It’s happened before.” Kaine didn’t need or want to get into the details of his life as a clone, but his deadpan response felt like enough of an explanation to him. “The name’s Kaine— Scarlet Spider. I didn’t pick the name, so don’t ask. And you’re Susan Storm. Fantastic Four, right?”

“Much appreciated.” Once Kaine took the bottle he lifted it in thanks, then took a long swig. “It’s weird being back, right? It’s not just me? Although I guess I wouldn’t be surprised if it was just me.” He passed the bottle back to her.

“There are a lot of people in Houston, too.” If she liked it here, Kaine figured maybe it would be fine to stay for a bit. Not forever, but temporarily. “But it’s something different, I guess. I’ve just always thought New York was a bit overrated.”

“No.” It was a defensive answer. “But don’t you ever get sick of how many Spiders there are? There are so goddamn many of us.”

“—it’s fine.” Kaine took a deep breath. “Don’t take it personally. Your dad’s not so bad, really. It can just be a little grating at times.”

“Maybe not. But don’t speak until you try Texas Barbecue. Pizza is nothing compared to that.” Kaine smirked. “No offense.”

“I am not Spider-Man. This isn’t even my city— not everyone has to live in New York, you know. Other places need help too.”
