the renewal questions are probably, well, just because now that the season is starting people are of course anxious for the next one lol, and then the article in Vulture talking about TVL not having Walking Dead numbers even though AMC pointed out that the second season was the #2 show on AMC, behind The Walking Dead, for a year. But AMC keeps talking about how in this streaming age, they're prioritizing passionate fanbases rather than going for blockbuster things like HBO does. From upfronts:
Throughout the evening, AMC executives emphasized their fandom-first approach to programming, targeting specific audiences rather than casting the widest possilble net with each series.
"Instead of getting bigger, we're focused on getting closer," said one exec. "Our model is more boutique than big box; we meet viewers where they are with a level of personalization, focus, community, and curation that is increasingly rare in media today."
So that's one reasons it's not surprising they canceled Talamasca -- it's not based directly on the books so they don't lose anything, and it didn't have either great reviews or a particularly passionate fanbase, it just landed "meh." IWTV / TVL is known for having one of the most passionate fanbases on TV. I doubt they'd give that up. Not least because if they did, a lot of those fans are never going to watch any other show in the immortal universe.
Of course, the whole industry is so crazy right now that anything feels within the realm of possibility in a way it didn't before the pandemic, but barring some huge development with AMC getting sold for parts or something, yeah, it's hard to see them ever ending IWTV/TVL in a way that doesn't feel like an ending fans will be happy with.
And now they have another season with, so far, 100% on rotten tomatoes and seemingly more buzz than ever.
Exactly. And as pointed out before: the IP issue.
It’s just very, very, VERY unlikely they‘d pull the plug on all this with these kinds of invests.
