At the end of season 1, when they're killing Lestat, Claudia reveals that she's known for a long time that Antoinette is a vampire, has been stalking her, and reporting her activities back to Lestat. That's why she creates so many diversions like getting the laudanum even though it's not even for the victims they're going to ply Lestat with. She goes so far as to hide what she's actually doing from Louis so he won't accidentally reveal it to Lestat. She lets Louis believe up until the last moment that it's the twins she poisoned.

There's a shot when Claudia is revealing that she knows Antoinette has been following her where it shows Antoinette listening behind a tree while Claudia is telling Louis she's going to get on a train. Why would Claudia do that if she knows Antoinette is listening? Because she intended it. She knew Antoinette would immediately run back to Lestat and tell him. Probably, Lestat met Claudia at the station and took her back. She then proceeded to tell Louis a horrible made up story of Lestat cutting off the conductor's head and berating her.

Why? Because she KNEW Louis would NEVER finally agree to help her kill Lestat unless she described some horrible scene of abuse that would push him over the edge. She knew Louis was still weak as FUCK to Lestat in many ways and unless she plied him with nightmarish stories he'd never agree to help her (and she wasn't big/strong enough to kill Lestat on her own).

The train didn't happen, but Claudia needed to make Louis believe it did so he'd finally agree to kill Lestat. She wanted Lestat's ass DEAD and she needed Louis to help her. And in the end, she still got screwed six ways from Sunday.

Okay. I think this is also a plausible theory.

I just have to add though - and trigger warning for personal stuff with parents -

The way Lestat says it never happened reminds me of one of my parents who was abusive. They would fly off the handle occasionally and do something so insane and violent that it was hard to comport with their typical behavior, especially since they weren’t abusing substances or doing anything to explain the behavior. As an adult, I’ve come to terms with them having severe trauma (it’s no excuse, but it is true). I can’t talk to this parent about any of it without being told I got the story wrong, that never happened, etc. They will probably die refusing to admit how bad things were (this is why Daniel’s relationship with his daughters intrigues me so much too, but that’s for another day).

It’s possible that Claudia embellished the story for Louis’ benefit - but the fact that she felt like she had to make it seem worse just shows how incapable Louis is of seeing the abuse. People who are being abused constantly minimize it - it’s a survival strategy. “It’s not that bad” is a way of reassuring yourself that you don’t need to be that scared. Facing how bad it is can be scarier than “the devil you know.” So IF Claudia has acknowledged “yeah, it IS that bad, and we have to go,” but she knows Louis is refusing to see it, that doesn’t mean it isn’t that bad. I means she did what was needed to save them both.

The scene is not about whether Lestat beheaded the conductor and acted silly. The scene is about Claudia’s emotional truth, which is that Lestat scared the shit out of her, manipulated her into staying, and proved himself untrustworthy once more.

Lestat has trauma and he lies to himself as much as Louis does. I don’t think Lestat is a bajillion times worse than anyone else, but in this scenario, it doesn’t matter if he came and whispered sweetly to Claudia begging her to return. He is older and more powerful, and he is manipulating her. She is in danger, and she can’t rely on anyone to protect her.
