Please share if possible to raise awareness. Sorry if this is off topic. There is currently extremely deadly flooding in West Africa.
This is in part due to climate change messing up the balance of the dry and rainy seasons. The floods have a ripple effect and are also causing landslides and other disasters.
People have died, and will continue to do so. Here are some news Articles: The Guardian RFI The Sun Nigeria PM News Nigeria Here are some charities you can donate to to help: Nigeria: The Borgen Project Ghana: NADMO Côte d'ivoire: Disaster Relief
Togo and Benin are also severely affected. Please consider donating if you’re able or helping spread the word. I have a slightly longer post on my blog that I'll be updating if anyone needs more information.
Thank you for sharing! If you wanted to donate to a cause, consider one of these!
every year small towns and indigenous communities across canada are burnt to nothing by horrific wildfires and americans go on the internet to complain about it and blame us bc the smoke has spread to their state. i’m so tired.
go yell at mark carney or your own local politicians about climate change and urge them to do more to stop it. the namaygoosisagagun first nation had their community destroyed today. you can find a link to donate to them here. donate to your local food bank. go to the beach next week when the smoke clears and you don’t have to think about it anymore while the people who’s lives have been destroyed will have to pick up the pieces and try to move forward when we are already in a huge cost of living crisis across the country.

In case anyone hasn't heard, the cyclospora outbreak affecting tons of people in the US right now is coming from Taylor Farms produce. Best to stay away from bagged lettuce and prepared salads completely right now, but especially the ones mentioned in the screenshot:
Taylor Farms Earthbound Farms Little Salad Bar (Aldi) Marketside (Walmart) Kroger House Brand Target private label greens Costco salads and greens etc Trader Joe's chopped salad kits and fresh produce Fast food: McDonalds, Taco Bell, (Yum! Brands), Chipotle, Subway, Pizza Hut, KFC, Olive Garden, Top Golf, Red Lobster, Burger King, etc.
This is not the first time I've heard about a Taylor Farms foodborne illness outbreak. I stopped eating their salads after reading a description of the conditions in their facilities. Doesn't sound like they've improved anything.
We need a fully funded and staffed FDA, and regulations with teeth - and that's exactly what we don't have under Trump. To make things worse, the CDC is no longer tracking these outbreaks. We're on our own.
truly wild how driving really does become like piloting a mech after a while. like it sounds so car-bro-y but the car genuinely does become like an extension of your body. your muscles are simply making the correct micro-movements to perfectly manouvre a giant piece of machinery through a constantly moving maze while your brain is busy singing karaoke. you can physically feel when a gap is too small for your car-sona to fit through, like a cat putting its whiskers into a crevice. your brain is suddenly able to do on-the-fly s=d/t calculations in a milisecond and tell you exactly how quickly you need to move to avoid an oncoming vehicle while turning across the road. why does driving unlock the unused 89% of my brain
What the hell.
Is that what driving is for most people? I looked in the notes expecting to see a bunch of bewildered reactions but everyone is agreeing with OP and it's not that I don't believe you, but like.
I drove for years and hated every second of it because I was constantly aware of the fact that I was in charge of a massive chunk of speeding steel and glass capable of causing death if I sneezed at the wrong moment. Not for a single second did the car feel like a part of me. Driving always felt deeply unnatural and highly dangerous. It is indeed Wild to think that the vast majority of people apparently smoothly mind-meld with their car.
No wonder I hate driving so much. Everyone else is having a fun Carsona drift experience while I'm strapped into the pilot seat of a complicated memory game whose penalty for losing is dismemberment.

I'm gonna say it, I do think that even the laziest person imaginable should have a roof over their head, food in their stomach, and access to healthcare
a lot of people are reblogging this saying that most "lazy" people are actually just disabled or that the concept of laziness itself is a product of our society's obsession with productivity. this is all true, but it is not my point.
even if someone WAS just lazy and simply didn't want to do anything but lie on the couch and watch tv, they should still have these things. it's irrelevant whether some people aren't actually lazy because everyone, including hypothetical lazy people, should have their basic needs met.
if we have the resources to do it, there is no defense of letting people die because they don't want to work, and much less because they can't.
I don't want lazy people to have basic necessities because they "actually" deserve them because they ARE working or CAN'T work. I want lazy people to have basic necessities because they are people, and we shouldn't leave them to die when we have the resources not to.
The KIDS act (which contains KOSA) passed the US house, so I would recommend calling your senators and telling them to vote in opposition. I don't think I need to stress the importance of being able to use the internet freely and without privacy barriers being breached.
There are many scripts online you can follow, many ways to tweak your message to fit your senator (ESPECIALLY if they are up for reelection this year). Whether it's a recording you reach or a real person, be straightforward, don't argue, just let your rep know that you are a constituent and you oppose the KIDS act, etc.
Here is where you can search for your senator... call, email, fax, bring them physical letters, show up in person to their offices if you are able.
um actually there's nothing wrong with letting cats be outdoor pets. your cat is depressed locked inside forever. it's animal abuse. let it outside. more cats should be let outside more often. especially overnight.

There’s a really good book all about this.

important that you never forgive ice agents, ever. even years after all this is over (and I do believe we will make it out on the other side, alive and for the better,) they live in shame and disgrace forever. no excuses, no forgiveness. they ruined their own lives when they decided that human freedom and liberty was an acceptable sacrifice for a paycheck

with local censorship getting worse and worse i've gotten into the habit of buying physical porn whenever i come across it secondhand. i'm now $5 poorer and the proud owner of the bare wench project (2000) by way of local thrift bookstore.
i kinda want this to be a joke post but at the same time i'm genuinely scared of the increase in censorship at the local level. the reason i feel the need to pick up some of this stuff when i see it in the wild is because cultural christianity and conservatism impact everything so much here to the point that, most of the time, any art that could be considered even remotely scandalous is at risk of being thrown away / destroyed for its perceived obscenity. i keep thinking about all the stuff that's gonna be lost.
i might've mentioned this before on here but i went to an absolutely beautiful estate sale months ago. it was clearly a home that had belonged to two lesbians who loved each other so much. they had a rich library of feminist texts and so much stunning art throughout the house. the estate sale had been outsourced to a christian organization who, as the estate was going on, were actively destroying, censoring, and throwing out pieces in the house that they perceived as sinful. they were also verbally denying that two women had lived in the home and telling various conflicting narratives in an attempt to erase the history of the house. i was lucky to arrive early and swipe up a bunch of queer books before the organizers realized what they were working with and started to destroy the history of the home. even if i hadn't seen some of their censorship directly, i could see gaps left in the home library of the two women myself - at least one of the women had been fluent in french (like me) and half of the library was in french. the french books (written in a language that i'm assuming none of the organizers could understand) contained much more obscene titles, content, and topics, as well as a variety of books explicitly about lesbians and women in love with each other. i also found some explicitly lesbian titles tucked away in corners of the house that would be out of sight, and am certain that there were countless more that had previously existed in plain sight and were taken off the shelves before the house was opened to the public.
i get so sad knowing that this sort of censorship happens where i live every day. so like yeah i've gotta pick up the titty dvds before the church ladies explode them. but also. it's becoming more and more commonplace to get rid of anything that can be vaguely marked as "too adult" or "too transgressive". people will toss a book with "gender" in the title. i get so sad thinking about the art that is being lost and suppressed every day.
one of my friends lives in a big city nearby and would frequent the only openly queer bookstore there. she just stopped in last week and they told her that they're having to move to an online-only model because they kept getting threats of violence at their current location. they started looking for a new location and applied to at least three different spots across the city, and were explicitly denied the ability to rent any of them because of the books they carry. and this is a big city with a vibrant queer scene, with queer bars and queer nightlife and events and so many queer people out in the streets as citizens of this place every single day.
this website lets you listen to the sounds of all different forests around the world
Reblogging again cause I tried this site last night and if you need background noise to focus this is perfect for that, I was locked the fuck in on a task. And it’s also just gorgeous to listen to
