My submission for @creatingblackcharacters ' Melanin Beam Challenge: Tyreen Calypso from Borderlands 3 I know I'm late but I'll be damned if I wasn't going to post this
Design notes and original design under the cut
I always hoped Tyreen was AfroLatina, when I played my first time around. I so so wanted Black punk rep. Only recently did I learn she's actually Latina and white. Soo, naturally I chose to redesign her for this event.
She's easily one of my favorite characters in BL3. She's so spunky and contrary to popular belief, I thought her "annoying streamer" vibe was funny and charming. She was cunning and had so much confidence in what she was doing. I would let her eat me.
I gave her "emo braids". Borderlands is not creative with Black hairstyles despite having characters live in a Mad Max style apocalyptic wasteland. Half of her head is shaved and grown out so I gave her that here as well. Lot's of texture with 4c coils, straight hair and braids, perfect for a girl with lots of texture in her design already.
I also gave her coat feathers the Puerto Rican flag color scheme for funsies. Her VA is Puerto Rican and canoncially Tyreen speaks Spanish in-game.
Ao3 version that lets you open the 'director's cut' where I, the author, explain every detail in excruciating detail to you and what it is in reference to.

The world is witnessing a genocide in Gaza. In addition to the extreme loss of life, restrictions on humanitarian access and forced displace
I don't know if this article is perfect since it's too long for me to fully parse right now but exactly as OP says it describes the way the "usa" backed "israel" is destroying the environment in Gaza.
Another article that goes over how the "us" military is one of the biggest polluters in the world, ranking above many entire countries:
US military pollution is a significant contributor to climate change. If it were a nation, it would be the 47th largest emitter in the world
Saying âIâm back on my bullshitâ is funnier when you cycle through hyperfixations at random intervals because no one knows what bullshit youâre talking about unless youâve made it obvious before or while saying it.
To be back on your bullshit you need to be off your bullshit ever. But Iâm over here jumping from bullshit to bullshit like Iâm playing some kind of platforming game. The only times Iâm not on my bullshit are when Iâve fallen off the platforms and canât get out of the lava to get back on my bullshit.
After spending a total of four hours trouble shooting Borderlands 3, I finally had the ability to play it :')
I am choosing to liveblog the game this time, seven years after it's release and the second time I'm playing it from start to finish. I already loosely know the game, so I'm going to be analytical and critical in my liveblogging. I didn't like the story the first time around and I want to see why I didn't like it and if my opinions of it have changed.
I'll be splitting up my playthrough by planet instead of chapter, as I believe every planet has it's own story within itself and purpose both narratively and gameplay wise (this might change).
Pandora (aka, tutorial planet)
I'm wanting to go light on the criticism here because this section of the game is meant to be an introduction and as I've played every game in the series including this one, is not meant for me. Narratively, this section is loaded with information and dialogue from characters old and new. Upon first starting the game, it's nice to have a callback to BL1 with the bus and Lilith talking via her siren powers. And the tutorial given by Claptrap is always great. Pretty straightforward, don't have any issues with it. Beyond this point is where I have some major criticisms.
Lilith on her own is good character wise. I like that she has taken Roland's place and is more serious and level headed compared to her being fiery (haha) and immature in BL2. Claptrap on his own is Claptrap, no issues with him. Vaughn isâŚtricky. I did not play the BL2 Fight for Sanctuary DLC to know how he was characterized in that, but I knew him in Tales. Good on him for taking on the Bandit Lifestyle, he seems happy. Don't like that he's in his underwear and his dick has jiggle physics. Ellie is fine, I love her. Tannis is still Tannis. The Calypsos are also fine. I never had an issue with them, I always liked Tyreen and the dynamic between her and Troy is interesting. I think they're funny.
Now, the story so far is fine, but the execution is troublesome. The game holds your hand, a lot, both in gameplay AND in storytelling. In the fifth installment of the series, the player should know Pandora and the characters and how the world works. The game acts like you don't. "Pandora is wild and crazy and violent" "Pandoran handshake, Pandoran hello, Pandoran flat tire". I get it. I know how the world works. Why are we explaining the area we have spent three games in? TPS didn't explain Elpis this much. This telling and not showing (even though there is a LOT of showing in environments and character tone and with enemies and NPCs. I really love the environments in this game) makes the game narratively annoying. It happens with the introduction to the Calypsos as well. Vaughn states that, "Tyreen runs the show and Troy takes the backseat." When not even 20 minutes later we both see and hear this in the sequence with Mouthpiece and the scene where the twins fight Lilith. Why not let me see it myself naturally? It ruins the immersion of the cut scenes and dialogue in the first place. I know Troy is second in command because Tyreen calls him a parasite after she shares Lilith's powers with him. We see this in how he's weak and on the floor while Tyreen is triumphant. Tyreen is more confident, her body language shows annoyance with him.
For a game that shoves its narrative down the players throat, it acts like the player isn't paying attention. As if an over 4 minute long cut scene wasn't watched and needs to be foreshadowed before you get to it to understand it.
I know I said I wanted to go light on my criticism, but again, I've already played this game. I know what is upcoming narratively. I am noticing problems that will presumably grow worse as the game progresses. I'm hoping that these issues aren't as prominent though and are only here to setup the story, but it's done poorly. No other game really did this so far. They expected you to know the previous installments or had a story that didn't require past knowledge to understand from the beginning.
Some other criticism is the dialogue and auditory clutter. Dialogue exchanges between characters feel forced, and at times useless. The dialogue between Vaughn and Lilith in the beginning is unneeded. Frankly, I don't care about the relationship between Vaughn and Lilith. I can learn about that in a side quest or in small dialogue before turning in/accepting a mission like in BL2 with the crimson raiders. I don't need to know that Ellie thinks Lilith is stubborn or hardheaded. I can see that in their other interactions. This relates to what I said above about telling excessively. There is no need to tell when it's shown blatantly.
TLDR: I like the gameplay, the environments, characters, and story. I don't like how the game is hand holding me through the narrative while also forcing me to pay attention to it. If I'm watching cutscenes, I understand the story.
I might expand on this post later and my opinions will hopefully change as I continue through the story. I also might reblog this with my opinions on the gameplay, but I actually like the movement and gunplay. I don't really have much to say on it in terms of criticism.

Not necessarily media related but I wanted to know if there's any writing on this. Not, for a direct answer bc I know that can't be found, but about people musing on it.
Do you ever wonder what your last name would have been if not for slavery? Bc I think about that sometimes.
I think about a lot of the things I'd have if it weren't for slavery. Don't get me wrong, I'm fiercely proud of my ancestors for getting dropped in the middle of hell and managing to survive and create and prosper no matter what the circumstances. I am proud to be the descendant of survivors, of some of the most adaptable and resilient people to walk the Earth. We have our own stories, our own ways of speaking, our own creations with infinite value.
But every now and then it's like. I wish I didn't have to always outrun thieves of it, of always having to constantly create new because you can't have SHIT for too long. Because this world swears we don't have one, despite always picking from it like vultures. I wish I grew up speaking the tongue of my ancestors, passing down stories and songs uninterrupted, inheriting things from centuries ago. I wish I had my real last name.
Fun fact, that's why Malcolm took on the last name X! Many Black Americans took on new names during Civil Rights and Black Power, shedding their names for new ones. White folk tried to call em schizophrenic for rejecting their "Christian, white names" but it's like. It's not even my name. Hell, even after emancipation, a lot of Black people came up with new last names, shedding the ones that were their masters!
every time I want to play any Borderlands game on my xbox one i am met with pain and suffering and torture from microsoft and gearbox tag-teaming me into a bloody pulp on the ground, shackling a collar around my gore pile as they drag me across shattered glass and beat me some more.
Israeli settlement expansion is not only illegal, it is also destroying Palestineâs environment through the urbanization of the West Bank.
Israeli settlements embody urbanization and the immense harm it poses. First, Israeli settlements are almost entirely built on confiscated Palestinian agricultural or grazing lands and are only erected after clear-cutting and uprooting local flora, namely olive trees: a primary source of food and income for Palestinians. The olive tree is also and an integral element of Palestinian identity, dating back millennia and symbolizing peace, steadfastness, fortitude, and resilience. As of 2015, the olive sub-sector constituted 15% of Palestineâs total agricultural income, supported over 100,000 Palestinian families, and provided â3 to 4 million days of seasonal employment per yearâ. Not only are Palestinian olive trees clear-cut to construct Israelâs illegal settlements, but according to the United Nations, are also âsubject to fire, uprooting and vandalism by settlersâ. Conservative estimates taken in 2011âafter which Israel has only intensified its colonial effortsârevealed that nearly 1 million Palestinian olive trees have been uprooted and destroyed in a settler-colonial attempt to erase all traces of Palestinian heritage, culture, and existence.
According to a 2020 United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report, the destruction of Palestinian olive trees â a cog in the greater, well-oiled Israeli mechanism of ethnic cleansing â coupled with the strategic expansion of illegal Israeli settlements, has devastated terrestrial ecosystems, causing severe âhabitat fragmentation, desertification, land degradations, rapid urbanization, and soil erosionâ. The UNEP went on to state that the process of urbanization through the âremoval of rocks for construction, the uprooting of trees, invasive species [most often imported by the Israeli government and settlers to âEuropeanizeâ the land], [and] pollutionâŚ[is] threatening habitats and species.â The cruel, discriminatory measures Israel imposes upon Palestinians has led, among other issues, to a drastic decrease in agricultural productivityâand hence economic growth and stabilityâacross Palestine.
The effect of urbanization on local fauna is equally frightening. The previously diverse Palestinian fauna is under imminent threat. Israelâs construction of roads, the methods used to do so, and a sheer disregard for their ecological ramifications all threaten and harm Palestinian wildlife. Israeli forces often drill deep into mountainsâinhabited by a wide range of natural faunaâthereby both displacing local wildlife populations, inhibiting their natural migrations, and resulting in a spike in animal deaths through roadkill. Furthermore, the destruction of the animalsâ natural habitatâparticularly their breeding and nesting sitesâthrough âextensive land leveling and the fencing-off of settlement perimetersâ has disrupted natural passageways, endangered many species, and caused severe imbalances in their population number and reproduction rates, affecting the food chain and local ecosystem as a whole.

The way all the 2020s have done so far have been making me categorically against every new generation of tech that comes out is insane. Like I'm from a technological boom generation, saw the first portable phones, nokias & blackberries & flipphones etc, and the first smartphones, and the first ipods & ipads & tablets in general while still having cassettes & DVD & MP3 players around so I know how all of it work, I had computer classes in high school, I did the transition between home desktop computers to laptops and back to gaming computers. But then they started to put internet in your printer & microwave, everything has ads & AI now and every update is worst than the last. I literally loved technology and they ruined it
Something that solarpunk / ecopunk / terrapunk / solar gothic / indigenous futurisms / afrofurturism does that fucking love is being able to imagine a framing for open source community tinkering that solves problems in ways that are protected from exploitation.
I was subscribed to Robot magazine as a kid, the trade periodical for adults, because prosthetics fascinated me. We are a species that fundamentally wants to help the people, and we'll tinker up cool stuff with and for them to do it! And everybody uses body modifying technology; eyeglasses are the go to example, but sunglasses, gloves, footgear, blankets, swimming goggles, flippers, camping chairs. We all have physical limitations we seek to transcend, and for some people that's walking, and others it's feeling chilly.
But I got fed up with DARPA buying/bullying/eminent domaining cool shit and locking it away for 15+ years. I'm tired of MBAs coming in and harnessing the techies, tinkers, and geeks like we're a fucking power source. I went to school to be an electron microscopist; a jogger safety sonic device we tinkered on became the LRAD. Personal helicopters, robot dogs, brain chips that help the blind see and the paraplegic move their exoskeleton, robots that are learning to speak, and to even understand a larger *fraction* of what they're saying, self driving electric cars, flying hoverbots, household android friends, virtual reality, lab-grown cuisine, a planetary artificial hivemind, computer glasses... THEY ALL SHOULD HAVE BEEN SO COOL. And instead they're fodder for one of my other blogs, @near-future-cyberpunk-paranoia
With all of this human endeavor, we could have been closer to Eutopia. Not U-topia, Greek for No-place, but Eu-topia. A good place. A fine place. A place where we're kinda okay.
We get to be angry about that. The perversion of the promethean spirit, the tinker geeks shoved into the locker of the psychopathic tech industry and its funding, the government/military contract. We should do something about it.
And some people do! Right to repair, FOSS, open source, hacklabs, maker spaces... Integrating that tinkering with an equal footing and dignity for ancestral technologies - I hold that every engineering major should spend a year in a history of science and industry focusing on the premodern era to stop wasting time starting from scratch rather than refining - and you have something special.
