I’ve never really blogged or anything before but this has been bothering me for a while and maybe someone can give me an answer. A few months ago I was fired from a job that I gave my all too and was amazing at. I was fired because this shift manager, whom was living with my general manager at the time, assigned me a task in a time that my team could not safely do. I stated “for a company that preaches about safety, you guys don’t really seem to care” in kind of a joking manner as we worked to get the job done. He asked me what I meant and I informed him that by giving us the time he did we could not safely do the job because we had to rush. He immediately cut me off stating that since, in this one situation, he and someone else could help we didn’t have to rush. When I tried to explain to him that even though that time he could help anything could’ve happened in which we would’ve had no help(I had worked there for almost a year and had seen pretty much everything that could go wrong) he would not listen to me. Instead, the shift manager talked over me. I repeatedly asked him to let me speak but he would not and continued to speak over me. I began addressing other issues, including how their scheduling left one man to do a task on his own which required a minimum or three people and also how my spouse, who worked at the job, was getting underpaid. The shift manager continued to talk over me and began laughing at me while I continued to ask to be able to speak. Eventually, I rose my voice because he was not going to let me speak otherwise. He then told me that I was getting sent home and upon escorting me inside, he nearly hit me in the face with a door. He took my badge and I immediately contacted my general manager and her boss and even the company that contracted them but nothing was done. I was fired for “insubordination” but I do not believe I was in the wrong. I was attempting to address a safety issue and only rose my voice after being blatantly disrespected. So was I in the wrong? Does is pay to stand up for yourself when I was fired for doing just that and for trying to protect my co-workers and customers from injury? Or should I have just conformed and allowed an injury to happen under my watch?
