Palazzo dei Pio pt.3
While waiting for the vaults to be printed, I worked on the laser cut files. We decided to engrave the windows and the doors, plus other architectural elements, in order to see them on the plexiglas and simultaneously see whatās inside.
The result was the best I could imagine, you can see some details in the first two pictures.
Once everything was ready, the parts have been brought to Carpi and mounted.Ā
As said in the first post, it has been fun, crazy and I learned so much! Apart from the broken 3D printers, everything worked precisely!Ā
A special thank to Paolo, Francesco who sponsored the material and my team at the SciFabLab, which is, as always, impeccable.
Here the link to the project.
Palazzo dei Pio pt.2
Since I was working on a very tight schedule, all 5 3D printers were working simultaneously. Of course, something had to go wrong, so one of the power cable burnt... and it was Thursday night... Plus one of the prints failed when almost complete. The reason was that it started tilting due to the heigh, as it didnāt have much surface attached to the printerās bed. So, the only decision I could make is to take my sleeping bag and sleep at the lab, in order to check the prints every 30 minutes and keep the progress under control.
I had to go to work the next morning and I left the last 2 prints there... Until I got a message that theyāre finished and pretty.Ā
Palazzo dei Pio - making process pt.1
On with the adventure!
I know, it took me over a year to post this project! Itās been one of my favorites so far. I fortunately took a lot of notes on the building.
Here you can find the making process of the model for Palazzo dei Pio Museums (here the link to the project), itās all about having fun and being a little bit crazy creative (and NO sleep for a few nights). Iām going to talk mostly about the vaults, the hardest part.
The first step was the .stl file. It is a medieval building, none of the surfaces is regular, it therefore creates problems with the 3D printing, as supports are needed everywhere. For my fortune, my colleague here was Paolo Borin, the most precise and fast engineer around!
So, positioned as it was, it would take me 2 days for just one vault! Impossible. Also because I only had a few days (and other work to do). So here comes the crazy idea: printing it vertical! It is particularly unstable, but it would take way less time!Ā
Step two: the filament. I chose AzureFilm filament, the quality is good and the price too! Most important: I could drive to the factory and get it immediately! I bought 5 kg (5 rolls) of Pet-G, it is very bright and behaves well with the temperature and speed.
So I did the first test: it works! So glad!

WOMENāS MARCH ON LONDON -Ā FRAME DESIGN
The Womenās March on London is a women-led movement that brought together people onJanuary 21, 2017, to affirm womenās rights.
Photographer Claudia Bouvier went to London to report the march in 2017. When she returned to Trieste, she asked me to design the frames for her photographs.
She wanted a clean design that emphasises the photo, almost as if they would come out of a cage.
Since the photos will be exposed in different cities, we chose to use cardboard because it islight to carry around. Moreover, it reflects our recycling philosophy.
FADE
This project starts with the observation of the shadows. It is impressing how the light plays with the objects it hits. Makes us see things that maybe donāt exist. I tried to convey this phenomenon on these vases. The top is corrugated but the bottom is perfectly smooth, as if a ray hit them by far and the details get lost in the distance.
Technology: 3D modeling with Rhinoceros + 3D printing
Thanks to Claudia Bouvier for the fantastic photos, I strongly recommend to have a look at her work, sheās an amazing young artist! And thanks to Ginger, who very Kindly and enthusiastically offered us the space with the perfect atmosphere to do the shooting and baked the delicious cupcake! If you are in Trieste and feel like drinking a good cup of tea/coffee and eat something tasty, go there!
(BTW: the small white vase is made with fluorescent filament, you can see it in the dark!)
This is an old one, this poster is hanging on the wall of the SciFabLab.
I made it for the Olivetti exposition that we hosted back in 2014 where Ā many old typewriters and old electronic devices were exposed. We were honored by the presence of our special guests Gastone Garziera and Giovanni De Sandre, who entertained us with the anecdotes and technical information about the first desktop computer, the Olivetti P101. These two amazing men were part of Perottoās team,Ā It happened in 1965 when theyĀ realized the first desktop computer of the world.Ā
The designer? Mario Bellini, of course!
Colombia Colombia we fly to Colombia this time :D
I was asked to design the logo for the Maker Expo Cartagena! It had to contain these concepts: science, the university of Cartagena, a bit of Marquez and a yellow butterfly!
I tried to merge all these concepts and the fact that is linked to the Trieste Mini Maker Faire in Trieste.Ā
Let me introduce you Vermo & Verma! They are the mascots of this the 2017 Trieste Mini Maker Faire.Ā
It all started when I had to design the āCall for Makersā poster which containedĀ the graphics of fishes and the seagull made out of tools. The question was: āwhat attracts fishes?ā, metaphor for makers? Among magnets and other tools, we chose the robot worms! Since most of the robots are male, and in most of the FabLabs work men, I chose to do also the girl worm (I promise that Iāll work also on other genders).Ā It has been such a satisfaction seeing them on the busses around Trieste, on the bus stops and in many other posters!
So here I posted a few things, the work includes postcards, flyers, sticker and the catalogue that collects all the makerās works!
A part from my work, it has been an amazing team work with the Sci Fablab!!!
Have a look at the Trieste Mini Maker Faire website, I hope you enjoy it!

The Happy Deer! Thanks to the guys of Roglab from Ljubljana (Slovenia) I have my deer printed on a bag! It all started in Berlin with a small graffiti and since then the deer stared to spread around Europe! More deer projects soon!
1 2 3 smile! Another cool project for an by ICTP! I was asked to design a series of laser cut hashtags to take the picture with!

(Physician) Girl power!
Iāve been asked to design the logo for the student of the Bonn UNU-EHS website.
I wanted it to be a clean and versatile logo, in order to be easy to fit it into any kind of layout, both for the web and for the paper.
I started with the colors, as the color of the UN is light blue, I wanted to keep this one. The second step was to find a strong characteristic of the city of Bonn and the university. So I found inspiration from the building of the UNU-EHS campus.
Here is the result!
Can you solve it?
I recente finished readingĀ āThe name of the roseā by Umberto Eco, which gave me the inspiration to do this labyrinth with tape.
Thanks to Davide Francescutti for this article that was published on the regional newspaper (Nordest Economia). And thanks to Carlo for the picture!
