In Advaita Vedanta, the only thing "to be afraid of" is the second thing—the perception of anything separate from the self.
Vedanta argues that all fear is born from ignorance (avidyā) of our true nature, which causes us to identify with the body and mind (the ego or ahaṃkāra) rather than the infinite, non-dual reality of Brahman.
Here is what is considered truly frightening about the path and implications of Advaita Vedanta:
The Dissolution of Individuality: The most profound fear is the "death" of the ego—the realization that the individual "I" is an illusion or a passing appearance in consciousness.
The Unreality of the World: The doctrine of Jagat Mithyā (the world is relatively real but absolutely unreal) can feel terrifying, as it suggests that everything one cares about—family, career, and personal goals—is a temporary, dream-like projection.
Absolute Self-Responsibility: Without a separate savior coming to help, you are your own savior. This brings a tremendous sense of loneliness and the burden of total responsibility for your own "salvation" or liberation.
The "Dark Night" of Deconstruction: Deep contemplation (manana) on these truths can lead to a sense of emptiness, nihilism, or "dark night of the soul" experiences, where one loses interest in life before finding the joy of pure consciousness.
"Fear from the Second": As stated in the Upanishads, dvitiyadvai bhayam bhavati—fear arises only when there is a second entity. If you are attached to the world as a separate, real thing, Vedanta threatens to destroy that security.
However, from the ultimate standpoint, Vedanta is a path to fearlessness (abhaya), as it brings the realization that one is the unborn, deathless, and limitless Self.

Had such a blast on our little trip to Raleigh to see Amyl & The Sniffers! 🖤🤘🖤
What To Do When It Happens
Write it down. The date. The time. What they said. What you said. What you couldn’t. This isn’t overreacting. It’s documenting.
Tell someone you trust. Not the one who explains it away. The one who believes you.
Save everything. Emails, DMs, texts. Rename the folder something boring.
Find the policy. It’s probably buried under “Respect in the Workplace.” Highlight it like your job depends on it—because it might.
Pay attention to what happens next. The silence. The cold shoulder. The missed invites. That counts too.
If it gets worse, you're not imagining it. Retaliation is common. It’s also illegal.
Don’t quit just to make it stop. Not before you talk to someone. A lawyer. A hotline. A friend who’s been there.
Crying in the bathroom is not unprofessional. Neither is dissociating. Nor surviving.
It’s okay to stay. It’s okay to leave. Either way, you’re strong.
What happened to you matters. Even if you stayed quiet. Even if you laughed. Even if you stayed quiet for a long, long, time.
NOTE: I wrote this on paper first (pic above) but realised my handwriting is mostly indecipherable trash. Didn't want to put you through that. Also, can people born after 2000 even read cursive nowadays? I truly have no idea.
