Gay has always been brutally honest about what surviving actually looks like. Not the clean, redemptive arc we're sold, but the real thing.

In my experience, so much of what gets handed to survivors is a script. Like: be strong, be brave, rise or whatever.

What I can't stand is that buried inside all that well-meaning noise is a quiet pressure to perform your own recovery. Like the world is saying: be palatable so other people feel better about what happened to you.

And real witness just doesn't ask you to do that. Anyway...
