Burroughs wanted to abolish “either/or” dichotomies from our speech, change every “the” to an “a,” and root out the verb “to be,” which is not, as it claims, a description of existence, but a “categorical imperative of permanent condition,” a way of programming people to disavow change, no matter how imperative.

Looking Back
by Ursula K. Le Guin
Remember me before I was a heap of salt, The laughing child who seldom did as she was told or came when she was called, The merry girl who became Lot’s bride, The happy woman who loved her wicked city. Do not remember me with pity. I saw you plodding on ahead into the desert of your pitiless faith. Those springs are dry; that earth is dead. I looked back, not forward, into death. Forgiving rains dissolve me, and I come still disobedient, still happy, home.

Return To Silent Hill was a fun movie.
Speaking as someone who enjoys bad horror movies, I found it supremely entertaining.
Speaking as a fan of the games, I wasn't expecting anything near that level of storytelling quality going in, so I was not disappointed.
A lot of it was silly, and yeah, I wish they hadn't copped out of making James more of a piece of shit. Imo, that would've made it more fun to watch him suffer. But I liked watching a goofy dumb horror movie with sotra stoned out Silent Hill themes and aesthetic.
I got a kick out of all the fem characters being versions of Mary, (that shot of all their names on the headstone was actually super funny,) implying that Eddie is also another version of James who shows up to kick James's ass for one scene and then fucks off.
Also, Mary in the final boss scene surrounded by moths and floating like a grotesque angel was pretty cool. I liked that a lot. Mainly I just liked this film had lots of creepy women.
Which reminds me of just how much this movie wants to remind you it's about a videogame. There's the weird CGI shots of Jame's face to make him look like he's in a cutscene, which is a pretty silly way to suggest a blurring of the lines between reality and fantasy. Also, the totally pointless 1st person pov moment when he gets into a bar fight at the beginning. Like what?! It's so heavy-handed and silly, I just laugh.
Anyway, there's nothing deep or serious about this movie. It's pulp, but honestly, I don't mind. Sometimes I prefer a bad movie I can earnestly laugh at over one that takes itself too seriously.
Bad film, fun movie. Best theater visit in a while. That's it, that's my piece.
