The tent, although a symbol of resilience and challenge, also reflects the state of humanitarian collapse we are experiencing.

As for us in particular, we have undergone five displacements, and with each move, we hope it will be the last. Living in a tent is not easy, especially with a large family that includes children and the elderly. We strive to adapt, but the biting cold at night and the extreme heat during the day make life inside the tent a continuous challenge. With winter approaching, our fears grow as rain and winds become an additional source of suffering. The tents do not provide adequate protection from the harsh cold or water seepage, making living conditions even more difficult.

Humanitarian aid is dwindling, and prices are skyrocketing, putting us in a difficult position as we seek new ways to secure the bare minimum for survival. Get to know Hashem's family

My name is Hashem Al-Shawish, and I am trying to save my family from the horrors of war. We are a family of 11. I live with my wife, Samar Shamieh, and our infant son, Omar. Since October 7th, our home was destroyed, and we were forced to flee five times, driven south by the occupation forces. Today, we live in a small tent, sleeping on sand, struggling with harsh conditions, severe cold, overcrowding, and the constant sound of explosions.

My wife Samar gave birth to our first child, Omar, in February 2024 after a premature delivery in the eighth month due to the stress and repeated displacement. Providing basic needs like diapers and clothes for Omar has been a significant challenge. With the poor quality of available diapers, he suffered from a rash. We never imagined our son would be born in a tent, surrounded by pollution and freezing temperatures, which affected his health, leading to a stay in the hospital for pneumonia, where he spent 5 days in intensive care.

As for my extended family, it includes my mother, my four brothers: Islam, Hazem, Samer, and Mohamed, and my two sisters, Nisreen and Nour. Islam and Hazem used to run a supermarket, which was our primary source of income, but it was destroyed during the war, adding to our financial struggles.

We lost our beloved father to the hardships of war. He suffered from high blood pressure and diabetes and became paralyzed after a hip fracture. After our home was destroyed, he was, like the rest of us, terrified. We sought refuge in my sister’s home in Khan Younis, but his grief over the loss of our home worsened, and he suffered a stroke that left him unable to speak. As his condition deteriorated, we were forced to move again to Rafah by the occupation. There, we all lived in a small tent amid the cold, which severely impacted his health, leading to his passing after multiple bouts of respiratory infections.

Today, I am reaching out for help to evacuate my family and give them a chance at a new life away from fear and destruction. The cost of evacuation is $5,000 per adult and $2,500 per child. These amounts are far beyond our means, but I hope to find compassionate hearts willing to help us through this ordeal.

We now live in plastic tents, which are thermal ovens, which are not suitable for living and do not provide the minimum necessities of life, in addition to the spread of epidemics and diseases, which puts our lives in danger.

The absence of basic hygiene supplies such as soap, disinfectants, and clean drinking water leads to an unhealthy environment, causing diseases to spread quickly, especially among children and the elderly. In this context, maintaining hygiene becomes nearly impossible in the absence of basic resources, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

My family’s suffering due to the lack of hygiene supplies: For my family, consisting of 11 members and currently living in a tent after repeated displacement, the severe shortage of hygiene supplies has made things more difficult. Both children and adults are at risk of diseases due to the inability to maintain daily cleanliness, especially as we are crowded into one small space. Even clean water has become limited, which adds to our suffering. Sadly, every time we try to meet our hygiene needs, we are faced with the harsh reality of exorbitant prices and a lack of essential supplies.
