I honestly think Gen-Z and younger simply does not understand how recent widespread smartphone adoption is.
I am not that old, and I didn't have a smartphone until probably late high school. For most of my life, many if not most people were not walking around with a magic internet machine in their pocket that they pulled out and used constantly for everything.
reblog if you remember having to ration your text messages and accidentally opening the internet on your phone was the end of the world

I'd like to share a song with you. It was written by czech folk singer right after occupation of his country by Soviets in 1968 and put on the album named Cancer (Rakovina).
With an enormous help of @ritacaroline I translated the lyrics so I could spread them. I love how timeless they are (not a single word would need to be changed for the song to fit in Ukraine "denazification")...
So here we have you,
brothers of Cain bloodline,
messengers of backstabbing night.
So here we have you, brothers,
grandsons of Stalin,
unlike yesterday, no lilacs today.
Well thanks for peace doves made of iron,
and thanks for kisses tasting like bitter almonds.
In gentle landscape faith was murdered,
Crimson rosehips lay on the roadside, mementos of those who have fallen.
Gratitude and warm embraces to you,
for heckling and shooting into children.
And let our homes be your homes.
The witnesses are the cementeries soiled with the stench of lead.
I know it would be fault to spit on memorials.
We are left with hope- as was then till now, we'll stand forever
(Russian) Thanks a lot, brothers usurpers,
thank you very much, we will never forget.
On the Road With Led Zeppelin in 1969
Left: Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Bonham performing during Led Zeppelin's show at the Boston Tea Party, Boston, May 1969 Right: Ellen Sander
As a journalist working for Life Magazine, Ellen Sander accompanied Led Zeppelin on tour in May 1969. She recounted the experience in her 1973 memoir Trips. This particular part of the book is often quoted, though not always cited, in articles and books about Zeppelin. That section, which is shared in its entirety at the end of the post, and the following excerpts from a May 2017 article about Ellen are from this source.
The front page of the November 1968 issue of the countercultural monthly The Realist featured “The Case of the Cock-Sure Groupies,” an eye-opening article by 24-year-old music journalist Ellen Sander:
They press up against the stage, the young ones, their faces bathed in delight or clenched in crumpled ecstatic agony. They lean over the edge of the platform, clutching gifts and beads or notes or the group’s latest album. And some reach, reach out, squirm on their bellies trying to get up over the edge of the state, just maybe to-touch-one-of-them . . . once. . . . Often they work in pairs, sometimes in gangs. . . . They’ll cooperate with each other to outfox whatever stands between them and the rock and roll boys—but only to a point. That is, they’ll gang a door to get inside, but once it’s broken in, it’s every girl for herself. . . .
Since so many of the groupies were underage, Sander used pseudonyms for two of the girls profiled in her article, but in an accompanying caption the editors noted that “the girls want not only their correct names published but also their photo, because of the increasing imposter problem.” The editors agreed to print the grainy Polaroid but identified the girls only by their real first names.
Sander’s gritty pieces on Sixties subcultures soon caught the attention of national editors, and she began to get commissions from national publications. For her first assignment for Life Magazine, Sander agreed to go on the road with a rock band and report on the grueling demands and tawdry hijinks of the concert tour, including the coterie of girls and young women who pursued band members. According to Mick Wall in When Giants Walked the Earth, Sander had hoped to cover The Who, but that didn’t pan out and she was instead invited to join the still-up-and-coming Led Zeppelin for the last two weeks of their second American tour in May 1969.
Led Zeppelin at the Fillmore East, New York, May 1969.
Sander met up with the band in Detroit and stuck it out until their last performance at New York’s Fillmore East. She was so infuriated and disturbed by the now-infamous incident that occurred after that show (and described on the last page of her story), that she didn’t write their publicity-seeking magazine profile. Instead, four years later, after the band had become international megastars, she included her account in the book Trips: Rock Life in the Sixties.
Ellen's piece on her time with Led Zeppelin was republished in the 2017 anthology Shake It Up: Great American Writing on Rock and Pop from Elvis to Jay Z. The headnote providing more information about Ellen's life was written by the editors of the anthology, Jonathan Lethem and Kevin Dettmar.
Below is the author's aforementioned write-up on the band titled Inside the Cages of the Zoo.
Interesting read.
Here are my favourite snippets:
(About Robert) ...He returned from the drugstore with shampoo, a comb, and some creme rinse for his copious mane, but no deodorant, which he needed regularly and badly.
Jimmy Page, inside, with that febrile, forlorn look that brought out perversity in fifteen-year-olds...
Robert was first onto the plane, galloping down the aisle like a demented ape, his armpit hair hanging from his sleeveless open-knit shirt, yelling at the top of his lungs, "Toilets, TOILETS! Toilets for old Robert!" The dear little Middle America passengers went into a state of mild shock.
And her resume is poignant: If you walk inside the cages of the zoo you get to see the animals close up, stroke the captive pelts and mingle with the energy behind the mystique. You also get to smell the shit firsthand.
So today (45 years ago) is roughly the date of their first jam, where Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham rehearsed on Gerrard Street, in London. By their own account, the chemistry was felt instantly as they blasted through Train Kept a Rollin’.
i love led zeppelin because every song is like [catchy riff] [robert plant moaning somewhat intelligibly] [riff again] [robert plant moaning] [unforeseeable beat changes] [robert plant [redacted]] [fade into fuck all]

I stalked a grasshopper because I was curious about its life, and I found (this is really cool) that grasshoppers like to walk in little circles before they start to chirr, just like cats do to make themselves comfortable on a lap. I wanted to write a post to let people know about this and was about to take a pic of the grasshopper, but it was perched on a boring blade of grass. I shooed it away and it jumped onto a different blade of grass. Then a fern. Slight improvement. I bothered it again and it picked another blade of grass. Thousands of flowers in this pasture my friend, would it kill you to pick one for the aesthetic?
Scene cut to a full 10mn later (time flies when you’re harassing a grasshopper), the bitter, exhausted insect finally picked a flower, but (on purpose) a half-wilted, funeral-purple one, just hideous. I mercilessly sent it packing and it made a huge exasperated jump like holy shit I’m a grasshopper, let me hop on grass. But it landed on an acceptable daisy! And Pandolf chose this moment to barrel past me towards the llamas. The grasshopper was having a terrible day, it got evicted from every plant it tried to sing on then had to hop for its life when a dog completely obliterated its daisy like a freight train ramming into a fruit cart. I finally gave up and took a picture of it on a blade of grass, to which it was now clinging with five of its arms while angrily shaking its little fist in my direction.
Robert Plant mentions his 1977 tour wife, Audrey Hamilton, during an 80s interview.
