he gets in, starts the engine, and for a while, they drive in silence. the city lights blur past them, and the sea whispers beside the road.
the car hums softly as it glides along the coastal road, the mediterranean stretching out beside them in endless shades of blue. the sun has dipped below the horizon, leaving behind streaks of orange and lavender in the sky. the windows are slightly down, letting in the salty breeze and the distant sound of waves crashing against the rocks.
lando’s hands rest loosely on the steering wheel, but his jaw is tight. his expression unreadable — not angry, not sad, just... distant. like he’s somewhere else entirely.
yn glances at him, her fingers curled in her lap. “lando?” she asks, voice barely above the hum of the engine. “what’s wrong?”
he doesn’t answer right away. just keeps his eyes on the road, the silence stretching between them like a thread pulled too tight.
then, finally, he speaks. “is it always going to be like this?” his voice is low, almost hoarse. “us hiding. pretending we’re nothing. for how long?”
yn’s heart clenches. she turns to face him, her big brown eyes searching his profile. “just a little longer,” she says, trying to sound confident. “until the company gives us more freedom. we’re close. a few more comebacks, and we’ll hit five years. that changes things.”
lando nods slowly, then frowns. “is it the same with karina? or is this just happening to you?”
yn hesitates, her gaze drifting out the window. “it’s complicated,” she says finally. “karina has her own way of dealing with the company, and i have mine. of course she tried to defend me, but it’s hard to make them listen to my side.”
lando’s brows furrow. “i’m sorry,” he says quietly. “maybe it’s me? maybe they don’t want your image tied to mine?”
“no,” yn says quickly, her voice firm. “don’t ever think that. the problem is... they want to maximize profits from us. now that we’re partnered with formula 1, the company can’t afford to lose visibility by having us stuck in one garage.”
lando looks at her, clearly confused.
“if every time we go to a grand prix, i’m only seen with mclaren,” she explains, “then i’m not representing formula 1 as a whole — i’m just representing mclaren. and that breaks the contract. the company loses money. basically, they want us to be free and available to look good with every driver, not just one.”
lando’s grip on the wheel tightens. “but karina’s always with carlos. and they don’t seem to block her the way they block you.”
“i know,” yn says softly. “i don’t understand what they want from me either.”
the car slows as they reach a quieter stretch of road, the city lights behind them fading into the distance. the sound of the sea grows louder, filling the silence between his words.
yn reaches out, her hand resting gently on his arm. “i want to tell the world,” she says, voice trembling. “i want to hug you when you win. i want people to know how happy you make me. but i need you to wait. just a little longer.”
lando glances at her, and the sight of tears brimming in her eyes makes his chest ache. he hates that this — their love — has to be something painful.
