Moe hasn't been eating well and is a lot smaller than the rest of her litter. To play it safe we ran a blood panel to see what was going on. We got in the blood results and it seems her levels are all over the place. Our vet called a specialist to review them today and They are concerned that it may be a Portosystemic Shunt (PSS). Essentially PSS is a defect in which one or more abnormal veins allow blood from the intestines and elsewhere in systemic circulation to circumvent the liver. These veins are actually remnants of normal embryonic blood vessels that for some reason fail to regress normally after the puppy is born. We will be scheduling her to go in and have a double blood panel done. We will need to fast her for a few hours, then have the first panel done. Then she can eat and will have the second panel done. This past week has been pretty emotionally exhausting here but one thing has stood out to us more than anything. And that is the power of networking. Reaching out instead of turning away. Even if you feel you can't do anything directly just by reaching out, networking, asking a question....you ARE doing something. You are making a difference, you are changing a life. In the past 4 days we have: Received an email on a breeder. A little white dog forgotten because they saw a flaw. Maja has no flaw, to everyone this little girl has touched since that first email, she is perfect. And because of that one email asking what could be done...her life is changed forever. Though she is skinny, dehydrated and full of parasites....she is also loved and in a furever home where she will live the life she deserves to live. We received an email from someone on two abandoned dogs, both skinny and one hurt. Both out in the ice storm and dropping temps. Both left ignored for 4 months in this area after being dumped. Yes it's true they were hours away from us and we couldn't help directly. But through networking and asking for help these two babies now have two rescues working tirelessly to get them safe. They have more love on Facebook than they have ever been shown in life. They now have angels who won't turn away until they are safe. Through surfing pages we saw a question last night, which led to an email, that led us to a very disturbing video, a video we might not have seen otherwise. We were able to take the information that we gathered and get it to an Animal Cruelty Task Force in LA and get an investigation going. Hopefully this small thing we were able to do will end the beastality that a beautiful dog is enduring. I guess my point is. If you see something...DO something. Even if it is just reaching out, posting out, sharing. We are greater in numbers than we could ever be alone. If you don't know what you can do, if you can't do anything, reach out to someone who maybe could. These animals depend on us to never look away. Sugar is still having potty issues so we did another culture to see what's going on. E-coli is still present in her urine as well as the rods of bacteria. She will go in on Monday for another culture now that she has been back on the antibiotics for a little over a week. This will help determine if she is resistant to the antibiotic and needs to see a specialist or if it's just a tough strain that her body is having trouble fighting. Minus some problems when she potties, she is doing great otherwise. I've come to the conclusion that she has decided to be a lap dog. Rio had a bit of a fussy night last night. He wasn't sick but he was up all night a bit whiny. He finally settled down about 5:30am.
