Ithaca: altered male, 15yo, 4.96lbs

Ithaca came to BARCS as a stray on 6/29 in heartbreaking condition. This sweet senior gentleman is severely emaciated with a body condition score of just 1/9. Since arriving at the shelter, Ithaca has not eaten, drank, or eliminated on his own, raising significant concerns about his overall health and ability to recover in a shelter environment.

Radiographs were within normal limits for the degree of emaciation present, but Ithaca requires a very careful refeeding plan and close medical monitoring to safely regain weight. Additional diagnostics, including senior bloodwork, intraocular pressure testing, and blood pressure monitoring, are recommended to better assess his condition and identify any underlying medical issues.

Despite everything he has endured, Ithaca remains a very kind and gentle old man who enjoys chin rubs and affection from his caregivers.

He deserves the opportunity to recover in a quieter environment where his medical needs can be properly addressed.

BARCS is seeking rescue placement for Ithaca as soon as possible.

Myth #1: I’ll Break Their Ribs, So I Shouldn’t Do CPR. 🦴

Fact: Indeed, CPR can sometimes cause rib fractures. But broken ribs are treatable—cardiac arrest is not. Without CPR, the person has almost no chance of survival. Always remember: better a broken rib than a stopped heart.

Myth #2: I Need Mouth-to-Mouth to Save Them. 😮‍💨

Fact: For teenagers and adults, hands-only CPR (chest compressions only) is just as effective in the first few minutes. The key is pushing hard and fast at 100–120 compressions per minute. Mouth-to-mouth is not required to save a life in most adult emergencies.

Myth #3: CPR Is Only for Healthcare Workers. 🏥

Fact: Most cardiac arrests happen outside hospitals—in homes, gyms, restaurants, and workplaces across Florida. Every day, people are often the first responders. That’s why anyone can and should learn CPR, not just medical professionals.

Myth #4: If I Call 911, I Don’t Need to Do CPR. 📞🚑

Fact: Paramedics take minutes to arrive. During that time, the victim’s brain and heart need oxygenated blood. Performing CPR until help arrives can double or triple their chances of survival.

Myth #5: AEDs Are Complicated and Dangerous. ⚡

Fact: AEDs are designed for the public. They literally talk you through each step with clear voice prompts. You can’t accidentally shock someone who doesn’t need it—the device analyzes the heart rhythm first. Every school, workplace, and community space should have one.
