Catastrophize Benedictine
INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE 3.01: Detroit TVLTwT/IWTVTwT Version.
The Vampire Lestat is now streaming on AMC+ and airs tonight at 9 PM on AMC. If you have the chance, please support the show by tuning in on the official platforms. Every view counts!
More than "here in the Southern Hemisphere we have inverted seasons :)" thing, which is TECHNICALLY true, I would go a step further and encourage to think about that "much of the world does not exactly has a spring-summer-fall-winter season sequence as they show in cartoons"
I will scream about this to anyone who listens forever. AUSTRALIA DOES NOT HAVE "ENGLISH SEASONS BUT BACKWARDS" and the insistence that it does creates a massive layer of alienation from the natural world.
I never really realised how much difference it makes until I went to England and realised that here the change of seasons is an obvious, visible, physical change in the world. Like, everything REALLY IS orange and foggy in autumn! In spring there are flowers EVERYWHERE, so much more than any other season, and the trees really do have all blossom and no leaves. Even if it doesn't snow, in winter there's frost all the time and the trees are bare and the sky is visibly greyer all the time. You don't need to be told "this date is the first day of spring", you can SEE IT (although this is getting way messier and less precise due to climate change).
By contrast, most places in Australia the seasons we're taught feel like arbitrary categories - and is it any surprise considering they're colonial constructs? Orange-leaved autumn and blossom-covered spring is a cartoon stereotype with no relevance on a continent where ALL NATIVE TREES ARE EVERGREEN!! Snowy winters are a joke in the desert, and even sunny summers don't ring particularly true considering that much of the country is in the tropics, where summer means monsoons - not that I've ever seen the concept that WE HAVE A MONSOON SEASON taught at an Australian school.
Most Indigenous nations around Australia had six or more seasons, revolving around wet and dry times as much as hot and cold, and marked by the appearances of certain native animals and flowers. Schools need to start teaching the real seasons, and explaining that climate cycles are too complex to generalise globally, or else we will keep raising generations who view the natural world as hostile and unpredictable and climate predictions as generally irrelevent and frequently wrong - and I'm sure I don't need to spell out why that's a problem in the era of climate crisis.
i want to add that 40% of the world's population lives in the tropics, and the 4 season model just doesn't make much sense for a lot of places in there. usually it's just the wet season/monsoon season and the dry season. it's often hot year round.
the 4 season model as you and i know it is a european invention, though 4 season models aren't unique to europe! most notably china has the same type of season subdivision.
in general the way humans define seasons is largely subjective and varies across cultures. the one you were taught is not at all universal!
So this one's interesting because it's all true, but also it's very different from my experience: the stereotype I'm constantly seeing is that the Southern Hemisphere is All Tropics, All The Time (and maybe the occasional desert). Which as someone from one of the regions in South America where we do have very marked four seasons it's kind of alienating. Like. We do have orange autumns. It snows here. And even plenty of my fellow South Americans just seem to forget about anything that's not the tropics or, like, maaaaaybe subtropical regions around latitude 35-ish.
tl;dr it's complicated. Season models are not universal but this is tumblr, I know some people are going to read this post and take "got it, the Southern Hemisphere doesn't have seasons" from it, and yet here I am as an actual real life South American who learned the four seasons from looking out the window and not from cartoons. If you walk out from this post having learned something please please *please* let it be "seasons are complicated, I should check what happens in X region" and not "tumblr told me they don't have winter south of the equator".
rest in peace to this diva

Mixed Messaging.
Back in 2023, @hugelunatic-deactivated20260510 gave @simnostalgia shit for archiving/scraping GoS “just in case,” citing concerns over scraping, bandwidth, and preservation itself.
Now GoS and Sims2Artists are suddenly gone, and people are left scrambling through remnants, mirrors, and whatever archives survived.
That is exactly why preservation matters.
You cannot discourage archival efforts and then act surprised when people are upset that massive parts of Sims 2 history vanished with little warning. You also cannot get angry over backlash when there was never any clear, direct communication to the wider community.
People were explicitly told that if GoS was truly at risk of going down, there would be an announcement.
No real community-wide warning was ever given.
And honestly, this is where the messaging becomes incredibly frustrating.
We were told:
hosting costs were manageable,
the site was not going anywhere as long as ads/donations covered most costs,
out-of-pocket expenses were still within budget,
scraping was mainly an issue because it increased bandwidth/server load,
“if I were not willing/able to continue, then there would be an announcement,”
and later posts even made it sound like things were functioning again after the PHP fixes.
Most people interpreted that as stability returning.
So yes, people are understandably confused and frustrated now, because the messaging for years was essentially: “Things are annoying, but manageable.”
Not: “Hey. This is serious. Archive what you can now. I may be done.”
And no, buried technical posts about PHP upgrades and drive failures are not the same thing as directly communicating that to the wider community.
I literally had to use archived Tumblr pages just to reconstruct the timeline before speaking on this.
And honestly, we are lucky @simnostalgia even had the foresight to preserve as much as they did back in 2023, because otherwise even more would likely be gone forever or nearly impossible to piece back together. But that archive is still missing huge amounts of resources, attachments, images, updates, and years of content added afterward.
What makes this even more frustrating is that @simnostalgia received backlash for trying to preserve the site in the first place. At this point, I honestly hope they feel vindicated, because this situation is exactly why archival efforts matter.
People absolutely would have helped preserve, mirror, archive, financially support, or even transition these sites if the situation had been communicated clearly, especially if HugeLunatic had simply said: “I am done. Someone else needs to preserve or host this now.”
so surreal to scroll through the gos archive and see stuff named 'clothes.zip' or just random lyrics or something. whatever's inside those files isn't technically lost, but it's hard to imagine organically discovering any of it again. yes it's possible to track down a download if you know exactly what you're looking for, but what if you don't...?
personally, this is a large concern of mine with this whole...thing.
i am right now preparing a final exam where there's huge emphasis on archives and archival work
otoh, well i know what i'm going to incongruously use as an example otoh, to quote one of the authors "an archive is only an archive if each fragment is put in its context with all that can help understand what it is. only in that relationship it becomes an archive and only if it doesn't lose contact with the whole" this is an enormous loss because GoS wasn't a compendium of things that people had created - it was a compendium of people creating things

SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN (1952) dir. Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen
Lighting Mod Ultimate Collection
(yes it's a reference to the ultimate collection because...it is indeed an ultimate collection)
The Lighting Mod Ultimate Collection is a lighting mod/framework that allows players to switch lighting configurations on a lot-level basis.
Now, the game itself already utilizes lot-level lighting as far back as Nightlife for Downtown lots, and some lighting mods have combined this with the usage of cheat aliases to use different lighting configurations that potentially suit different lots of neighborhoods, or using different lighting color definitions (as in Cinema Secrets's implementation of World Lit by Fire), or the lighting direction changes in Maxis Match Lighting Mod.
However, Lighting Mod Ultimate Collection takes this a step further and features five lighting mods in one setup. This means one installation and you can switch from one config to another on the fly.

Here's a legal PSA:
If you've committed a crime and a detective gathers everyone involved in the room, especially if he's not actually a detective and is instead a novelist, puzzle-setter, psychic, fake psychic, dog, chess grandmaster, etc. ...
YOU SHOULD NOT CONFESS.
Every year, hundreds of people are put away by non-traditional "detectives" who have either inserted themselves into the case or are working with the police in a dubiously legal capacity as advisor. In 99% of these cases, the murderer gives a full confession even though the evidence against them is circumstantial at best and often requires a long just-so story which can only guess at motive.
If this happens to you, stay quiet, do not attempt to defend yourself or talk your way out of it, only say "I want a lawyer".
Now if you find yourself being investigated by a boy genius, magician's assistant, anthropologist, classics scholar, or philosopher, it's likely that refusing to talk to the police (or investigator with no legal authority) is merely the end of the second act, and by the end of the third act they will have you dead to rights.
YOU SHOULD STILL NOT CONFESS.
Make them take it to court. Force the eccentric detective and his straight-laced police partner to take the stand and explain their methods to a jury of your peers. Have your lawyer look at the chain of custody on the evidence, especially if you believe it to have been handled by someone who has only bumbled into detective work through their natural charm and/or unique set of skills and outsider perspective that come in handy more often than they should.
Know your rights. Don't let eccentric detectives put you away.
So. For those of you who didn't pay attention to the details of the legal spat between Krafton and Unknown Worlds, allow me to give you some details of the finest legal comedy of a generation.
Krafton CEO looks at the hype surrounding Subnautica 2, goes over the contract between Krafton and Unknown Worlds, realizes he'll have to pay out bonuses and freaks out because shelling out those bonuses will make him look like a pushover.
CEO goes to his legal department, asks them to come up with a plan to weasel out of paying bonuses. Legal tells him the contract is iron-clad and to accept the loss.
CEO refuses to take the loss, asks ChatGPT for a plan. ChatGPT says the exact same thing the legal department did.
CEO demands a plan from ChatGPT, which dutifully spits out a plan at this point because clearly the CEO is a goddamn idiot.
CEO deletes the chat logs, failing to understand that 'delete' doesn't permanently remove things.
CEO follows plan, and is surprised when Unknown Worlds sues for breach of contract despite being told by both humans and an LLM that is exactly what would happen.
Court does not go well for Krafton's legal department. It comes out that after ignoring the sound legal advice of human beings, the CEO went to ChatGPT and asked for a plan. When asked for the logs by the court, Krafton's legal team states they were deleted, thus that it's simply herersay. Judge goes "Oh, that's okay, we'll have our IT folks recover them." Krafton's legal team is astounded that's even possible.
The chat logs are recovered. It comes out that even ChatGPT was in agreement with Krafton's legal department, and only spat out a plan after being asked a second time.
The judge, now thoroughly done with the stupidity of Krafton's CEO at this point, rules in favor of Unknown Worlds. Her ruling doesn't simply undo the scheme, but effectively leaves all control over Subnautica 2's development in the hands of Unknown Worlds, including the early access release date, reducing Krafton to just publishing out of contractual obligation. Krafton must also return all social media platforms for Unknown Worlds and Subnautica 2 to Unknown Worlds' control. Financial damages will be determined at a later date.
Krafton proceeds to violate the court order in less than 72 hours by trying to set an early access release date before returning Unknown Worlds' social media platforms.
Summary: In trying not to look like a pushover, Krafton's CEO now looks like a complete idiot who's going to have to fork over bonuses, plus court-mandated damages, plus whatever comes out of violating the court's orders. Krafton's legal department may as well come to court dressed as clowns after this. I suspect Unknown Worlds might buy the rights to Subnautica back after all this and either relegate Krafton to just publishing or find a different publisher for future games altogether.
btw, Steam is currently having an "ocean fest" where they showcase all the ocean themed games on the store
which they obviously decided to do by complete coincidence and didn't mean to say anything by this or anything 🙂

Just really wanted to draw Coco and Agott 🥰
It’s hilarious to me that so much of the TVL promo has been like “What if Lestat was the coolest guy in the world?” And then this new teaser is like “I mean, he’s not. But could you imagine?”
