i feel like i talk about it soo much but maybe not on this blog (or maybe i do) or maybe its just confined to my own thoughts but i think about buffy + masochism like so much like a Lot and it usually crops up when i start thinking about s6. and there is definitely some bleeding happening there because i identify so strongly with s6 buffy but thats basically half the drive for all analyses of media. but god i love how much she seeks that pain. she cant die no matter how much she'd like to, and dying means peace, and if she cant have peace, she must have done something wrong, and if she's done something wrong, if shes wrong, then she needs to be punished for it. and the way she goes about it, it's half in pursuit of absolution, but its also inherently selfish. she's focused on the peace she used to have and the half-drive to get there. pain = death = peace.
on the OTHER hand, because btvs is nothing without its dichotomies, i feel as the other coinflip of pain is presented in tandem. the flipside of death is life. it is textual, we see this happening the way buffy grows more lively and more in touch with life after she starts her relationship with spike, who has multiple times been connected with the imagery of death. he is the slayer of slayers, he'll make her neck his chalice, he's the one who first brings up the inherent death drive of the slayer and how he took pleasure in killing them. and YETTT. buffy begins her relationship with spike/death that is filled with roughness and bruises and blood and episode-by-episode, we watch her become more connected with her friends and family again. maybe another person has a different reading of this, but i have always viewed that it was this relationship with spike, which was supposed to be that death knell/this unconscious action to get her closer to oblivion, that was instead the feeling (once more, with feeling) given back to her tryst after tryst to bring her back to herself. and she ends their relationship once she's well and truly alive again. i wont discredit the scoobies, her relationship to them is extremely important, but i feel like it really was spike and their affair that led buffy to switch her tracks from death to life.
if pain = death, it is also true that pain = life. if death is calming and forever, life is not. life is furious, fleeting, and feeling. i keep talking about this because this is the crux of buffy in s6 to me. buffy goes from wanting to die to wanting to live, and throughout it we are watching her navigate this labyrinth of pain. first it was inflicted on her, the immediate pain of being brought back with terrible sounds, scents, & sights, clawing her way from the grave bloodied, and its horrible. and then she starts seeking it out with spike. i dont mean to say spike represents pain, but so much of their s6 relationship is actually about buffys relationship to herself, her death, and her newfound life, that spike becomes yet again a mirror held up to buffys darkest. and she goes back to him over and over to look at herself in the mirror. she doesnt have to. but she seeks it out.
a character being a perpetrator does not negate their victimhood and neither does their victimhood negate being a perpetrator. u can accept and reckon w both dimensions in ur analysis
there is nothing morally purifying about suffering or victimhood, it is not something that inculcates “goodness.”
one’s character has no impact on whether they were/are a victim or not, victim status is not something that is only afforded to the palatable.
it also does not = absolution.
ppl cant handle this in cartoons made for teenagers lets not get ahead of ourselves

For all its faults supernatural has Castiel. None of these prestige tv shows have Castiel. None of these books have Castiel. No matter what media I consume i keep coming back to supernatural because it has Castiel.

i will never not reblog this
i cannot stress how much it does for us
a while ago, one of my mutuals was considering quitting writing. her fics weren’t doing as well, and the algorithm wasn’t favoring her writing like it used to.
so as a collective 10-15 writers, we all reblogged her fic once each. that alone put her writing at the top of the tag.
it makes a difference. way more than you think. it doesn’t matter if people see it because of you, it still gets promoted by the algorithm.
please, reblog fics
need more stories with fuck up villainous healers. healer who becomes the villain team's resident torture expert because they can extend the pain out for as long as needed through the power of full HP restores. healer who fights terrifingly dirty and fears for nothing because she can rapidly recover her own wounds on the fly. much to consider.

sorry i have a problem with this way of thinking about spuffy
i need everyone to stop projecting their ideas of normal/traditional healthy human relationship/dynamics onto spike and buffy because there is literally no way in hell anybody in this show is redeemable or worthy of forgiveness by any standard if you do that, including buffy herself. and it's a complete waste of nuance that was very deliberately crafted into the story too. spike is a villain and buffy is a hero and both want to kill each other for different reasons and they both actively try to do exactly that multiple times. both feel deep deep hatred for one another for most of the time they spend in the other's presence. spike should by all accounts try to kill her constantly because he is the villainnnnn. it's almost his job. same way buffy should want to kill him any chance she gets. that's the standard that's set and that the characters should meet. it's only when they get caught off guard by their own self reflected back to them through this other being that their preconceived ideas of how they should behave take a step back and they engage with each other almost softly, very gently. like in the scene that's referenced in the op.
i guess my problem with it is that it comes across as if fans only like spuffy because james marsters is hot and people are too dumb to think critically about the media they're consuming. which sure, seeing these dynamics could be harmful if you're a teenager watching, but not more harmful than, say, bangel. not by any standards. bangel might be worse by the simple fact that angel is not supposed to be perceived as a villain so anything he does gets idealized and romanticized, while spike is perceived as a villain and punished for it all the way to the end of the show.
it's because of everything bad spike and buffy have done to each other that the soft gentle things are all the more devastating. fans that like spuffy do so with their eyes fully open and mostly their moral compasses fully intact. there's no situation in real life that could mimic this because in real life if a man goes after you with a shotgun there are no amount of tears in the world that will stop him. if a man kidnaps you in real life and holds you hostage until you say you love him back you will not live to tell the tale. if a man attempts to rape you he's not doing so because he's a supernaturally soulless creature of the darkness, acting from a place of confusion and fully aware that you could stop him with a flick of your wrist, and because you're not a being that was gifted with superpowers strong enough to make you the most feared creature amongst fearsome creatures. spuffy is not a self-insert fanfiction about a hot man pulling himself down to your level and being worthy of a pedestal for it, they're about shadow integration!!! they're about the dynamic of the monster/slayer romance!!! they're equals in strength, hate, lust and love for one another!! that's what's hot about them TO ME
jensen ackles doing so much in that hanging himself gif he shouldve been a mime instead of the world’s first omega
