hi this is the cultural appropriation anon. re: bindis, i think you missed the point a bit, because fashion in this capitalist society is exploitative, and society hasn't moved forward enough for there to be an equal sharing of cultures without a power discrepancy. in a perfect world it shouldn't be an issue, but for as long as desi girls are teased and ostracised for wearing bindis, it's a slap in the face for you to do it and get fashion cred. it's not anything to do with intention.
Fashion is not exploitative. I think you also "missed the point" a bit there. That's such a sweeping generalisation, maybe SOME aspects of the fashion industry are exploitative, but you can't say that an entire enormous industry is exploitative. And exploitative in what way? You need to be more specific. That's like saying the entire food industry is exploitative, when only some elements are. I really don't see the sharing of cultures as a negative thing. If you saw someone in Somalia wearing an Australian rugby jersey, or a Catholic cross, you wouldn't have a go at them for appropriating another's culture? Expand more on desi girls being teased and ostracised for wearing bindis- I looked this up and couldn't find anything about it, where are you getting this info from?

if you want to understand the true nature of racism in today's society, look up waleed aly's 'curse of australia's silent pervasive racism' and read up on microaggressions. racism is not about bullying other people, it's about absorbing the ignorance that comes out of media and society and unfortunately, gwen stefani's forehead without critically analysing it and realising "hey, doesn't this favour whiteness?"
I've actually read the article in question before, and however much I appreciate Aly's perspective and extremely valid points: he's not actually addressing cultural appropriation and fashion (?) he's discussing employment opportunities and subtle and pervasive racism within society. Also- as good as opinion pieces in newspapers are, peer-reviewed journal entries from sites like JSTOR are usually more credible. I don't feel like I don't understand racism, as you probably don't know me in person, you wouldn't know that my group of friends is extremely diverse and multicultural. I have Hindu friends who have no problem with me wearing bindis, and other decorative face jewels, because as opposed to the sign of the seventh chakra, or traditional wedding jewellery, they're purely used for decoration. Their parents and relatives also have no problem with me and my friends wearing them, they often find it endearing when we do it, and no Hindu friend of mine has ever expressed concern over it as a fashion trend.
in sam's room excessively gemming with keely before the dungeon party. I cut my knee and cosmo and I had a slumber party feat. heaters but that's about the extent of the ~craziness~ this time. Please note that my hair is crimped because nat cornrowed it the night before, I felt like a baby sheep.
